Olympic Velodrome, London. Image courtesy of London 2012. During the design of the
velodrome, an investigation into options for the roof structure was undertaken by Expedition
in collaboration with the architects Hopkins. Four different options for the distinct double
curved roof were evaluated on cost, carbon, risk and programme impact. The steel cable
net roof (Option C), was shown to have the lowest embodied carbon and also performed
well on cost and programme, and it was this solution that was taken forward to
construction. The lightweight design of the Velodrome means that it has a very low
embodied carbon for the scale of structure and building typology.
