Michele Wie is a golfing sensation. Her ambition is to become the greatest woman golfer of all
time and then to play against the best men in the world and beat them. Very few women have
ever played against men at the highest level in any professional sport before.
Michele is 1.86 meters tall, she has perfect swing, and she drives a golf ball about 300 meters.
That is as far as most professional male golfers can hit it. At 17 years old, she is considered to be
one of the best women golfers in the world and is already playing in mens competition.
Michele Wie vas born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1989. Her father, Byung-Wook Wie, and her
mother, Hyun-Kyong Wie, are Korean. There are both very good golfers, but Michele was beating
them by the time she was eight years old.
Michele started to play golf when she was just four. When she was ten, she played in her first
major competition and in 2002, at just 13, she won the most important womens competition by 13
shots. In 2004, at 15, she became the youngest golfer to be a member of the U.S. womens team.
A year later she became the first female golfer to play in a major mens competition in the U.S.
Many people think that Michele will have more of an impact on golf than any other player
before. She will attract people that even Tiger Woods cannot attract. Young boys and girls, and
families, will love her.
Other people don't think that Michele will ever be able to really compete with men at the highest
level but she has an answer: Men don't like the idea of a woman beating them. They're afraid of
me, she says.
