The British Aerospace Harrier II was a second-generation vertical or short

takeoff landing jet aircraft used previously by the Royal Air Force and
between 2006 and 2010 by the Royal Navy in areas of operation like
afghanistan and iraq.
The aircraft was the latest development of the Harrier Jump Jet family, and
was derived from the "McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II".
Initial deliveries of the Harrier II were designated in service as a "Harrier GR5"
then upgraded airframes were introduced along with different armoury
capabilities named the "harrier GR7" and "harrier GR9" as seen below.

Armoury
They have an average max altitude of 43,000 ft and a top speed of 574kts.
The typical armoury loadout for a harrier would be the following :
CRV-7's

The CRV-7 uses a modular warhead, fitted to a rocket motor and is launched
from a streamlined pod, each of which contains 19 rockets ,which can be
fitted with a high explosive, semi-armour piercing warhead for attacks on
unarmoured targets and a kinetic energy penetrator, which contains no
explosive for attacks on armoured targets and they have a rough range of
4km.
AIM-9L Sidewinders

The AIM-9 Sidewinder is a short-range air-to-air missile,The missile is divided

into four main sections - guidance, target detector, warhead, and rocket
motor the warhead containes a 10kg annular-blast fragmentary warhead and
its main feature is the IR homing ability of the rocket and it's target detection
system.
Maverick's

The Maverick is an air-to-ground tactical missile (AGM) designed for close air
support, it is effective against a wide range of targets, including armor, air
defenses, ships and any infantry transportation, it has two types of warhead:
one has a contact fuze in the nose, the other has a heavyweight warhead
fitted with a delayed-action fuze they are lazer guided and have a range of
around 22km although it is unable to lock on by its self it must be given input
by a laser guided system on the ground.
Paveway 2

The Paveway 2 laser-guided bomb is based on the Mk 82 500lb generalpurpose bomb, but with the addition of a nose-mounted laser seeker and fins
for guidance, it has range of 12km with its lazer target system and can carry
a 500lb or 1000lb explosive.
Paveway 3

The Paveway 3 is the upgrade from a paveway 2 it has a lazer-guided bomb,

with bunker buster capabilities and a 2,000lb explosion that has a range of
19km.
Enhanced Paveway

The Enhanced Paveway is a dual mode GPS/INS and laser-guided bomb The
weapon has a guidance kit based on the existing enhanced paveway 2 added
to a modified bomb with increased penetration performance , The new
system contains a Height of Burst (HOB) sensor enabling air burst fusing
options, and a SAASM (Selective Availability Anti Spoofing Module) compliant
GPS receiver. It can be launched either IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) only,
given sufficiently good Transfer Alignment or using GPS guidance. Terminal
laser guidance is also available.
General Purpose Bombs

GPB bombs are 540 lb and 1,000 lb with a wide variety of fin, fuze, and
retarder options their main usage is for Fixed targets and precision strikes
with jdam guidance packages it has a range of up to 15 nautical miles and
has an accuracy zone between 7m - 13 m.
Role
Here at twc we use Harriers mainly in the ground attack and reconnaissance
roles, but they are equipped with the short-range AIM-9 Sidewinder missile for
air combat.

Typicially they would be attached to a platoon with a FAC (forward air

controler) to assist with communication and you would recieve your orders
from him as they would be in touch with the company/platoon leader and
with the section leaders on the ground to relay any relevant information.
Things to expect when taking this role are:

aircraft carrier landing

radio procedures

veichle repair

engageing ground targets

engageing air targets

evasive manouvers.

Comminication -The 6 liner

All these topics below should be covered during the radio transmission
between you and FAC in a smooth and timley fashion and it is advised that
you have a pen and paper ready when doing this, so that you can understand
and recive commands correctly and make corrections where needed.
You will be expected to be fluent in twc's 6 liner, this is very important in
gathering and reciving all the relevant information needed for planning
attacks and understanding the task at hand, the 6 liner is as folllows : (it's
easier if you split in into 2 parts)
*infil mark - friendly positions - exfil mark - hostile location - hostile
type and count - target marking and weapons*

"roger that good copy" REPEAT THE ORDER BACK FOR CONFORMATION IF
UNSURE OR MISSED ANYTHING!
"eta for strike 7 mikes" (say the approx time u will arrive or the bomb /
missiles would launch)
there is 2 different types of saying "hostile location/ hostile type and
count/marking and weapons" because of the situation at hand and maybe
time is of the essence so just remember this and be confident in this
structure, if you have any questios or hesitations about the requests just ask !
