‘No lazy strikers allowed’
The national strike by the South African Municipal
Workers Union (SAMWU) also filtered through to
Burgersfort this week where quite a number of Greater
Tubatse Municipality (GTM) workers picketed in front of
the gate of the municipal building in the town.
They were quite peaceful with sporadic songs and
dance in solidarity with other members of their union who
sometimes during the week, did not strike as peaceful in
bigger centres in the country.
The group in front of the municipality’s gate carried no
placards and unlike last year, no tyre was set alight. It
also looked as if the recession got to the vuvuzelas, as only
a tiny hooter (looking like a miniature vuvuzela) provided
the accompaniment to the songs (and the one used last
year to stir the fire was damaged beyond repair?).
Also the strike by local municipal employees was not so
sorely felt by residents as much of the services, such as
refuse removal, are anyway farmed out to service
providers...
During the whole strike, the municipal buildings
remained open for service (even Ohrigstad) with members
of other unions and those not belonging to any union,
keeping the wheels turning.
Whatever the case may be, nothing distracted from the
seriousness of the issue and the strikers duly held roll call
every day to ensure that nobody go on vacation while they

By the time of going to press yesterday morning, the
South African Local Government Association (SALGA)
and SAMWU was still negotiating outstanding issues
around the plight of union members.
One of those included its demand for a job
evaluation system that would grade all jobs in the local
government sector. SAMWU also accused SALGA of
firing workers, thereby undermining service delivery
and wasting money because they appointed expensive
lawyers to handle labour related cases. “SAMWU is
demanding the removal of these lawyers from internal
disciplinary procedures as this is a huge waste of
ratepayers’ money and escalates conflict at the shop
floor,” the union said.
SAMWU also wants to resolve seven years of
negotiations to make middle and lower income
municipal workers’ salaries market related.
On Tuesday a bid by SALGA to prohibit the
industrial action was withdrawn in the Labour Court,
with SALGA ordered to carry the strikers’ costs of
opposing the application.
The SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry was
also unhappy that a mass strike was called as the
economy was picking itself up after the recession, and
ahead of the Soccer World Cup.

tydens die amnestietydeperk van 11 Januarie tot 11 April
ingehandig. Net een van die vuurwapens het nie ‘n lisensie gehad
nie.
Vroeër het die Polise by monde van die minister, Nathi
Mthetwa gesê, nasionaal is 32 169 vuurwapens tydens die
amnestietyd ingehandig waarvan 27 persent onwettige wapens
was. Saam met die wapens is ook 348 083 rondtes ammunisie
ingehandig waarvan 24 persent onwettige ammunisie was, 52
persent is saam met wettige wapens ingeahndig en 24 persent van
die ammunisie is gekonfiskeer.
Die meeste wapens is in Gauteng ingehandig, gevolg deur
Kwazulu-Natal en West-Kaap.

‘Mpumalanga is the answer’

This is the view of Mr Timothy Mqiba of Mapareng village
between Ohrigstad and Strydom Tunnel in reaction to recent
developments around service delivery in the area.
Mr Mqiba recently played a prominent role in service
delivery protests in the area since the end of last year when
the residents of villages in the area blocked the R36 road with
hundreds of large stones to draw attention to the lack of
services such as electricity, water and proper access roads in
the area. 74 people were arrested and charged because of this
action. They also resorted to a march in Burgersfort at a later
date.
The court case against the 74 accused has been postponed
more than once and the group was split into respective village
groups. Now the whole group has been combined again and
the case moved to the regional court in Praktiseer. According
to the Police in Leboeng the court date has been set for early
July.
Mr Mqiba says “We do not know what to do. Nothing
seems to help, nobody listens. We went to the recent National
Council of Provinces Taking Parliament to the People
programme in Praktiseer. It did not help, they threw me out
of the tent. Look at the road you travelled on, it is getting
worse every day. We still have no electricity. The municipality
put in an electric pump for the water because the diesel one
broke down. It helps, but there are still people without water.

are trying to get running to get some electricity”. According to
Mr Mqiba things went better when the area still resorted
under Mpumalanga.
“Residents are talking that they want to go back to
Mpumalanga so that projects can be finished. Look at at this
unfinished RDP houses. When is something going to happen so but that the Greater Tubatse Municipality will not allow meetings in this regard at Mapareng. He says

Woman robbed in town

A woman was robbed of her handbag and other belongings on 13 April at about
18:30. She was walking in Dirk Winterbach Street in Burgersfort when the
indicent happened.
Two men approached her and grabbed her belongings and ran away. They took

Jan Temba Manzini-Mathebula (23) was sentenced to two years

imprisonment. He was sentenced on 9 April for a housebreaking and theft
that occurred on 20 November 2009 in Ga-Mashamothane.
He took clothes, jewellery and shoes from the house he broke into. On 21
November the residents of the house discovered the theft and reported it to
the Tubatse SAPS. On 18 December the Police arrested Manzini-Mathebula.
The sentence he was given was without the option of a fine.

The R37 running through Burgersfort is
perhaps one of the only national roads with
an R designation and not an N designation.
The very high traffic volumes often result
in major traffic jams when an accident
occurs. Authorities however is trying to
determine what will be the best way to
solve the Greater Tubatse Municipal area’s
traffic problems.
Mikros Traffic Monitoring, a company from
Midrand has been installing Electronic
Counting Stations all over the municipal
area. A total of seven stations were
installed.
“The government wants to know how many
cars pass through town,” said Mr Thabo
Legodi of Mikros Traffic Monitoring.
The stations they installed are active for
seven days and not only count how many
cars pass over them, but also record the
length of the vehicle and the speed.
These statistics classify the vehicles into
types e.g. heavy vehicles and normal sedan
vehicles. The information gathered during
the recordings will also be useful to
determine where better traffic policing
should be done as the average speed of the
vehicles are recorded. The station is
however not a camera speed trap and will
not photograph the law-breakers.
Due to the heavy mid-town traffic the
station that is counting the vehicles from
and into town was placed between the
Themba Garage robot and the robot
turning into Eland Street.

Calvinites can
talk their way out
On 27 March the debate team of Calvin College participated in the Vice-
chancellor’s Trophy debate competition. The competition was held at the University
of Limpopo in Polokwane.
The group was one of 19 schools that participated. The first round consisted of
three rounds of debating. All the schools participated in these rounds to determine
who will be going forward. Calvin College was in the top four and proceeded to the
semi-finals.
They then faced Capricorn High School and won to proceed to the finals. Here they
unfortunately lost against Eagles Nest High School.
Tetelo Mashigo was named the sixth best speaker of the whole tournament and
Lerato Moraba as the most creative speaker in public speaking.
Topics that was covered included Corporal punishment by parents; Ordinary South
African citizens will not benefit from the World Cup; As an example for society
celebrities should get stiff penalties when they break the law; Society’s morals is
jeopardized by technology and Removal of barriers on human genetic enhancement.
The group is dreaming of hosting their own tournament at Calvin College, but will
need some sponsors to make this happen. Should anyone be interested to help them
the school can be contacted on 013 231 7643. Schools with debate teams who would
like to have friendly debate matches with the pupils from Calvin College can also
contact the school to arrange this.

Last month the Competition Tribunal
imposed a R195 million fine on Pioneer
Foods for it’s role in the so-called bread-
cartel.
Pioneer Foods and companies such as
Tiger Brands, Premier Foods and Foodcorp
were accussed of price collusion. The
Competition Commission handed its
referral of the alleged collusion in the
milling industry to the tribunal, reported

toer na Hoedspruit
Steelpoort Akademie se eerstespan (0/13) en hul 0/11 span het gedurende die April
vakansie aan die Carpe Diem Rugbyweek op Hoedspruit gaan deelneem. Die week is by
die sportgronde van Laerskool Drakensig aangebied. Dit het vanaf 26 - 30 Maart
plaasgevind.
Laerskool Phalaborwa-Noord, Laerskool Krugerpark, Laerskool Louis Trichardt,
Laerskool Bergland, Laerskool Drakensig, Laerskool Tzaneen, Laerskool Pietersburg-
Noord en Steelpoort Akademie het aan die week deelgeneem.
Die eerstespan speel 6 wedstryde waarvan hulle drie wen en drie verloor. Die 0/11 span
speel vyf wedstryde waarvan hulle een wen en vier verloor.
“Dit was ‘n positiewe toer. Ons het baie geleer en die kinders het dit baie geniet,” sê mnr.
Carsten Ludik.
Hulle het al die borge bedank wat die toer vir hulle moontlik gemaak het.

0/15’s wen Engelse toerspan

Hoërskool Lydenburg se 0/15 rugbyspan het op 3 April teen ‘n toerspan van Engeland op Lydenburg gespeel.
Lydenburg het die wedstryd 20-18 gewen.

Laerskool Ohrigstad op toer

Laerskool Ohrigstad het van 4 - 7 April ‘n rugbytoer
onderneem.
Die groep is na Camp Discovery, so 60km noord van
Pretoria. Daar het hulle saam met twee ander skole
afrigting by Neels Grobler een van die afrigters by die
Blou Bulle/Tuks Rugby Akademie gekry. Daar was
behalwe vir die wedstryde wat hulle gespeel het ook
lekker spanbou aktiwiteite, wildritte, fietsritte,
kaskarwedrenne en hindernisbane. ‘n Totaal van 7
spanne het in dié tyd daar gespeel en daar was elke
dag ‘n wedstryd of twee. Roelie Oelofse, Ohrigstad se
skrumskakel is as die beste speler in die span
aangewys. Die skool bedank graag Longtom Nissan,
ABSA Burgersfort, McGee’s Lydenburg, Lydenburg
Toyota , Woodcity Burgersfort en Hoedspruit
Smithfield Farms.

The Tubatse and Burgersfort SAPS combined to form a
formidable soccer team. They played against Tubatse Mighty
Aces on Wednesday late afternoon.
The game was played in Praktiseer and took the form of a
social match.
Tubatse Mighty Aces were the first to score after the game
started. They managed to keep the SAPS team away from the
goalposts.
During the second half the SAPS fought back and managed to
break through the Tubatse Mighty Aces’ defences. They scored
two goals during the second half.
Mighty Aces managed to slip through and score another goal.
The game ended in a draw 2-2.

Dames B het hulle plat gevee

Winterveld Ringbal Klub het verlede week Saterdag hul eerste ligawedstryd gespeel.
Hulle het teen die spanne van Tzaneen te staan gekom.
Die wedstryde het laat begin omdat Tzaneen se spanne met meer as ‘n uur by padwerke
vertraag is, maar uiteindelik het die Dames B spanne mekaar eerste die stryd aangesê.
Dié span wat baie nuwelinge het, het uitstekend presteer en die besoekers met 21-10
gewen. Die doelstatistiek vir hulle was ‘n suksessyfer van 24% en vir Tzaneen 12%.
Die Mans A-span het ‘n vinnige, moeilike wedstryd gehad. Hulle het uiteindelik 32-77
verloor. Hul doelstatistiek vir die wedstryd was 30% sukses teenoor Tzaneen se 59%.
Die Dames A-span het ook verloor. Hulle eindtelling was 16-40. Die doelstatistiek het
gewys dat hulle nie veel minder sukses as hul opponente gehad het nie. Hulle het ‘n 26%
suksessyfer gehad teenoor Tzaneen se 28%.
Die Mans B-span se telling was 14-26 in die guns van die besoekers. Hulle doelstatistiek
was 15% vir Winterveld en 24% vir Tzaneen.
Die doelstatistiek vir al die spanne vir die dag wys dat Winterveld 24% sukses by die
doelnet het teenoor Tzaneen se 33%.
Die volgende ligawedstryd wat die klub sal speel is op 1 Mei. Dit is weer ‘n tuiswedstryd
