Bench DQg_s
CHOOSING THE RIGHT BREED

Although a bench dog looks like a simple

:;quare peg, it has a complexjob. In addition
to holding the workpiece down on the bend.,
it sbould hold its position (heilt) while
you're gelting the workpiece in plat.., (wben
there's no pressure on the dog ai, :ill).
Also, when the dog isn't being used, it.
should drop just below the surface of the
bench to be out of'the W3):

PEG PROBLEMS.But why go to all the

trouble to make the anj!'led square holes in
the bench (or square do!!,,? Why not just

bore round boles and use dowels for do"rs?

Dowels aren't ~uiu, ble for ""veral reasons. One of the problems is the boles. If
the holes aren't bored all the way through

NO BITE. But the biggest problem with
dowel peg. is the.v can't get a good bite on
the workpiece. This is because peg holes
are usually bored perpendicular to th~
bench surface and a little oversized so the
dowels won't bind. When pressure is applied, the dowels lip backward, So. in.,tead
of gripping the workpiece. they actually
spit it lip and out. see I"ilt_1.
ANGLE HOLf:. Angling the hole for the

pressure is applied, the dowel would
