I started stocking my new
bookesse (_ P31.>e 12)with books
on woodworking. I realized I
needed some bookend, tomaintain
order. That, when it dawned on

bookend. 1b make it functional, a


plate is added lo the bottom orthe
base to complete the -1'" shape.
One end of this plate is covered by
the books. The IIlhel' end is recessed into the base.

No mauer how big the books are. a


bookend doesn't have to be mnssive to do it>;job. Design. not bulk.
is the key. The trick is \0 let the
books supply the weight to hold
themselves up.
The easiest w~IY to make a
bookend that work.~ is t.o evaluate
why typical bookends - both
heavyweight.< and lightweight>;falldown 011 the job.
HEAVYWEICHT. Bookends lhat
rely 011 weij,oillhave to be huge to work. If
you take a book out. even .he heaviest
bookends \\;0 slide when the library leans.
LlGHTWEIGHT. The moot common ti!(htweight bookends are Lshaped, see Fig. I.
They can be scaled to look great and have
surfaces thal invite decoration. But Ir
shaped bookend. are nothing more than It
block with most of the mass removed.
Ooe common sohition to make up for the
missing mass is to add 11 non-slip surface to
the bottom of the booke.nd.But this doesn't
help. Sinet! friction is (UI't.,<,Uy related to
weight. no matter how much "grab" the
bottom of a bookend M.,. the L-shape still
slides or till& because it's not heavy enough
to bear down for a good grip.

MASONITE BACKING. To support

the
plate all the way lO ~he edge during sawing, [ backed it with I,j.' Masonite. 'Ib do
this. I used a couple strips of carpet tape to
stick the plate to the Masolute. see ~1g. 7.
CUT TO SIZE. Now eut the plate and
Ma.""nite to .i7.e on the table saw. Begin by
lIawing off one side to make sure one edge
of lhe plate and Masonite is even.
Shop Nole: Bra", is very soft and is easy
to cut with. carbide-tipped saw blade. see
Sources. page 24.
Next. set the fence to the width of th~
recess in the base, With the (n,shly-(;ut
edge against the fence, rip the plate 10
width. Theneut it to a length of6".
END PROFILE- Alter the plate is cut to
si7.e. the end th81.mps under the books ;.
cut to" semicircle with a sabre saw. First,
draw the arc on the Ma..'Onite backing.
Then, clamp the piece with the Mnsonite
side up and CUt the curve LUshape with a
sabre saw and file it smooth. see FigS.

en the router tabl e. To do this set the
height of the chamfer bit so it lakes just 8

with the plate against the table, guide it

FiJJally, smooth the chamfer with 220grit silicon carbide paper. Then separate
