Grade:3 Subject:Math – Adding & Subtracting 2-digit numbers Date: Nov.

5/08

Objectives:
- Use base ten block to add and subtract 2-digit numbers
- Students learn and use strategies for adding and subtracting 2-digit
numbers

Evaluation:
- I will observe and listen to students to see what strategies they are using
an dif they’re understanding the concepts
- I will ask students questions to see if they can relay the information back
to me (comprehension of lesson – solidify what they’re learning)
- Observe to see if they are recognizing patterns in addition and subtraction

Materials and Aids:

- Base ten blocks and place-value mats
- representatives
- Math journals/books

C.E.L.’s:
- Critical and Creative thinking – partner work
- Independent learning – answering questions on their own

Prerequisite Learning:
- Place-value knowledge
- Adding and subtracting

Presentation
Set:
- Have students count the number of boys and girls in the class.
- Have a volunteer put base ten blocks on the overhead projector for the
number of boys and girls
- Have a third volunteer combine the two sets of blocks to count how many
students are in the class
- Ask students how they could find out how many more girls or boys there
are in the class. Students may have different strategies.
• One strategy is to pair a boy with a girl (or do this with blocks on
the overhead), until you run out of boys or girls. Then count the boys
and girls who are not paired.
- Present Explore: distribute base ten blocks and place-value mats to
students.

Development:
- Go over Connect with students
• How could you check your answers? (do reverse operations)
• Get them to explain their strategies and how they got their answers.
⇒ When do you need to trace 10 ones for 1 ten?
⇒ When do you need to trade 1 ten for 10 ones?

Closure:
- Assign questions for students to do in their notebooks

Adaptive Dimension:
- There will be group work and work done on the board so all students in
this class will be able to participate and understand.

Professional Development
Target:
- Have class participation and call on all students

How I plan to achieve my target:

- I will call on students – usually those who raise their hand, unless I know
they have an answer without being put on the spot.
- I will walk around the room to talk to individual students.

Questions:
- How did you model 46? (I used 4 rods and 6 unit cubes)
- How did you model 18? (I used 1 rod and 8 unit cubes)
- How did you use Base Ten Blocks to add 46 + 18? (I counted 14 unit cubes.
I traded 10 unity cubes for 1 rod and kept 4 unit cubes. Then I counted 6
rods. 46 + 18 = 64)
- How did you use a place-value mat to subtract 46-18?
- What other strategy could you use to find how many more bottles of juice
than water?
