REMOTIVATION THERAPY
Remotivation is a method of group interaction that has been developed to increase the contact
between a psychiatric nursing assistant and his patients, one which can be used by any and all
nursing assistants. It is believed to help patients turn toward "reality." By "reality" is meant that
the patients become more aware of others and outside events, interacting on a level that the
staff considers appropriate. Examples of behavior at this level of awareness are knowing the
names of the aides, responding when addressed, responding to direct questions, and
participating in simple conversations.
Purpose:
to promote discussions of topics that may bring participants closer in touch with the
world outside the institution
Process:
Group (8-15) interaction for 45-60 min
Conducted by a trained staff sometimes an aid (remotivator)
Attempt to renew interest in environment by:
o Planning conversations that stress simple, objective features of everyday life not
related to their emotional difficulties (e.g. gardening, baseballavoid
controversial subjects such as sex, politics)
o Establish warm, accepting atmosphere
o Deal with well parts of client
o Encourage rediscovery of interests
o Begin to establish control over leisure selection
5 phase process (each 10 min)
1. Climate of acceptance
a. Greet each participant by name
b. Shake hands
c. Made some comment about participants appearance
d. Purpose is to create a warm, supportive environment
2. Bridge to reality
a. Develop group discussion around a theme
b. Start by reading a poem, story or article related to theme
c. Ask questions to encourage participants to recall and share ideas related to topic

Read poem Freight Cars
3. Sharing the world we live in
a. Visual aids and questions used to encourage clients to share personal stories

b. Attempt to move focus to world as it currently is

4. Appreciation of the work of the world
a. Get participants to think about pros and cons of the topic
b. Help relate the topic to other things in the world
c. Encourage to rediscover past hobbies or occupations
d. Projections to the future are encouraged

What are the other jobs on the train?
What jobs are in the freight yard?
Which of these jobs would you like?
5. Climate of appreciation
a. Review what has been said
b. Comment about how each person participated
c. Than the people for attending
d. Tell about plans for next session
