Phillip Harries, A convenient alternative to the linear air track and blower.A
sturdy and near frictionless stainless steel track that provides a compact
environment for many investigations that might be
done using a linear air track. Two heavy trolleys with
hard, free-running wheels, are included, plus a set of
100g x 10g masses and a reel of cord. The track has
solid end panels, with a rubber coating to buffer any
collisions. A cm scale is screen-printed along the length
of the track.
Each trolley has a knob for attachment of cords for
towing, and for ticker tape if that is the schools
preferred method of capturing the motion of the
trolleys. A 4mm socket on the trolleys top surface, allows for simple attachment
of interrupter cards for use with light gates (Motion QED, see page 288) or timing
software (see pages 345 to 368 for datalogging).
A free-running pulley on one end of the track, allows a mass attached to a length
of cord to be used as the accelerating force for one or two trolleys. Note that the
trolleys can be stacked to immediately provide a trolley effectively of double the
mass.
Each trolley has a spring-loaded ram that can be set and released to provide
reliable and repeatable launches. The ram can launch a trolley (single or double
mass) from one end of the track, or simulate an explosion were two trolleys fly
apart.
The "Notes For Use" includes work on acceleration, exploring F=ma,
investigations on an inclined plane, momentum and explosions.

Bio-Energy Discovery Kit (Ethanol Fuel Cell)

Introducing a new power technology using mostly
water, and drops of ethanol. This innovation could soon
charge our portable electronics, and all kinds of remote
devices. The Bioenergy educational and discovery kit is
the first product of its kind, and gives us a close-up
view of the possibilities. The direct ethanol fuel cell is
comprised of a small chamber within which the ethanol
solution (90% water, 10% ethanol - similar to wine in
alcohol content!) is in contact with the cell's membrane
on the anode side, while the cathode is open to the ambient air. Electricity is
produced as the wine-like solution slowly turns to vinegar. Once this process is
completed, a purge mechanism allows "fresh" ethanol to flow into the reaction
chamber, simultaneously expelling the used fuel. Experiment set and desktop
fan able to run 8-12 hours with a few drops of ethanol. It is possible to
experiment with any kind of alcohol solution between 10 and15%. Manual
included for set up and experiments.

G Ball
The simplest way possible to measure 'g' by Free Fall!
This innovative 'baseball' allows easy measurement of the
acceleration due to gravity - at a very cost effective price.
The ball contains an integral digital timer, which can
display times between 0.01 to 29.99 seconds. Simply hold
down the button to zero the display then release the ball
from your hand at a known height above the ground.
Timing starts when the ball is released and stops when it
hits the floor. Although the mechanism is well protected it is advisable to drop
the ball onto a soft surface, such as a grassed area or carpeted floor. Maximum
vertical drop is about 12 metres, depending on the landing surface.
The 'g' ball timer is powered by 2 x SR54 button cells, which are replaceable.
Comes complete with batteries. Dimensions (Dia.): 100mm.
Examples of experiments using the 'g'-ball:
1. Determine the acceleration due to gravity.
2. How high is this ceiling/stairway/ building
3. Release the ball from a certain height. Repeat the experiment from the same
height but now throw the ball sideways and compare the results.

Thermochromic Smart Cord

This temperature reactive extruded polythene cord (mono
filament) contains a thermochromic pigment which
changes colour at 31C from red to pale pink. Normally,
when a mono filament is extruded (like a nylon fishing line)
the cord is mechanically stretched to align the molecules
along the length of the cord. This provides the strength,
i.e., when the cord is stretched, it thins down but gets
stronger. This smart cord is un-stretched and when pulled the molecules realign
and the cord becomes stronger (this has to be done quite slowly). Also, when
you stretch the cord, the realignment of molecules generates heat and the cord
warms up and changes colour! Dimensions (Dia. x L): 1.5mm x 10 metres.
Smart Putty
('Silly putty' or 'Bouncy putty') Known as visco-elastic
polymer or dilatent compound. This class of material has
the remarkable property that it usually behaves as a soft
mouldable plastic (like chewing gum), but instantly
becomes a rubber if impacted: i.e. it bounces like a ball.
Supplied in 20g container.
Smart Film
This highly reflective film can be combined with
different materials and coloured substrates to
provide eye-catching visual impact in both
reflection and transmission. The colour of the film
depends on the base material and the angle from
which it is viewed.
The film is made up of over 250 layers of polymer.
Being metal-free it is non corroding and non

950

conducting. It is not adhesive. Film is sold by the metre. Dimensions (W x L): 380
mm x 1 metre.
Thermochromic Sheet (Sample Pack)
A remarkable self adhesive sheet material
printed with thermochromic liquid crystal
'ink'. Changes colour (bright blue) when
heated above 27C. Potential applications are
many and varied. e.g, temperature
indication/warnings, body jewellery,
advertising displays (attach a resistance wire
to the rear and pass a small current to cause
dramatic colour changes to the front 'screen'.
Note: Typical applications require only very
small pieces - e.g. 25 x 25mm.
Note: Sample Pack contains a piece of thermocolour sheet (50 x 150mm) and a
metre of resistance wire and an information pamphlet that describes how to
make a simple 'LCD'.
Memory Wire / Smart alloy
Memory wire is a nickel/titanium alloy (NiTi) and
'remembers' its original shape when dropped into
hot water (90C). The wire also 'remembers'
different shapes by holding in the desired shape
and heating to 500C for a few minutes. Supplied
by the metre. Dimensions (Dia. x L): 0.78mm x 1
metre.

LOW VOLTAGE PAPER ELECTROPHORESIS KIT (Not
the original DNA one)
Zone electrophoresis is a well known analytical
technique that can be applied
to different substrates e.g., the gels used for DNA
investigations. Paper electrophoresis
has a long history, but is less common in schools
because of the
high voltages normally associated with this technique. However, using the new
chromatography card, the process is viable at a safe working voltage and can
be used for demonstrations and as a simple analytical tool. The card is wetted
with a suitable electrolyte which might be anything from vinegar (to make the
card conductive for simple ink separations) to a DIY buffer such as a mixture
of common salt and sodium bicarbonate. The paper is laid onto an acrylic
bridge that spans between two pots containing the solution and the card is

laid over this and the ends passed down through the slots. Self adhesive
conductive tape strips at each end of the bridge provide the means of
connecting
to a lowvoltage supply e.g., two or three 9V PP3 batteries in series
The kit includes:
2 x 60ml buffer containers
1 x slotted acrylic bridging piece
1 x rectangle of chromatography card
1 x length of conductive tape
2 x crocodile clip leads

The teacher packages comprise all necessary media for classroom work:
1. Set of selected prepared microscope slides in plastic box. Prepared Microscope
Slides are made in our
laboratories under rigourous scientific control. They are the product of long
experience combined with the most
up to date techniques.
2. Set of overhead transparencies, large size, full color. Overhead Transparencies
immediately show, on the

screen, the details of the specimen required for demonstration at the most
suitable magnification. The student
subsequently finds it easier to locate the relevant part of the microscopic slide
under the microscope. The
transparencies are printed by a special process and excel by reason of their high
projection quality.
3. Set of sketch- and worksheets with drawings for all slides. The Sketch- and
Work Sheets serve to facilitate
seeing his way through the prepared microscope slides and finding the detail
important in the lesson. They start
processes of learning and understanding by comparing microscope slides with
the diagrammatic drawings, thus
to identify and label the details relevant in the lesson. They allow completing or
colouring the drawings according
to own observations, and finally the sheets can be used for tests. Teacher may
take photocopies of the sheets for
the number of students.
4. Textbook with detailed description of all slides, drawings and transparencies.
The Textbooks are intended to
help you make more effective use of our teaching material both in the classroom
and during individual study.
They provide a description of the morphological structures involved, making it
considerably easier to look for and
find the relevant spots in the microscope slides. They also furnish information
regarding systematic and
physiological relationships and general biological principles, as well as
stimulating classroom interpretation and
didactic use of the observations made.
5. Special cardboard box for storing and packing
