CANONICAL- LITURGICAL FORUM

BY FR. GEM BANDIVAS, JCL, MBA, PhD

COMING LATE AND LEAVING RIGHT AFTER COMMUNION

Dear Fr. Gem: It is unfortunate that some in the parish
have developed the poor habit of leaving Mass (whether
during weekday or Sunday) immediately after
Communion. I always believed we were to stay until we
received the final blessing. Am I right? Also, for reasons
of respect, both for God and neighbor, I was always
taught never to be late for Mass and I have trained my
children to do the same. Could you provide a theological
discourse on this matter so others maybe enlightened
as well?
ANGELINA, Parishioner
Dear Angelina: The concern you raised is a perennial
problem, but one which must be faced with patience. As St.
Paul would say, "Opportune et inopportune" (in season and
out of season), until the message reaches home.
Taking part in the Mass especially on a Sunday is not
only an important Christian obligation, as the Catechism of
the Catholic Church teaches (n. 1389), but first and foremost
a profound need of every member of the faithful. Those who
deliberately fail in the obligation, of course, commit a grave
sin. However, we have to be careful in apportioning sin to
their actions, for we rarely know the circumstances or
motivation.
First and foremost, it is important that all of Christs
faithful be at Mass especially on weekends. Pope John Paul
II in his Apostolic Letter Dies Domini said: "It is crucially
important that all the faithful should be convinced that they
cannot live their faith or share fully in the life of the Christian
community unless they take part regularly in the Sunday
Eucharistic Assembly." (n. 81)
The Second Vatican Council called the Sunday Mass
the "summit and the font" from which we derive our strength
to live our lives and make our world a better place.
I imagine if people had this understanding, this same
sense of obligation and love of God, they would always be
on time for Mass, participate as well as they could in the
prayers and the hymns and would stay until the Mass is over
to make a good, sincere thanksgiving.
Another point to be emphasized is the importance of
assisting at the entire Mass. There are many plastic images
to illustrate this, but most can grasp that if their boss, or the
local mayor, summons them to a meeting, they would not
dare leave before their host has formally brought it to a
close. Even more is this true when a beloved parent, sibling
or lifelong friend invites us to spend time with them.
If we behave thus before mere human authority and

relationships, then how much more should it be true when

our host is the Father who created us, the Son who died and
rose for us, and the Spirit who gives us life.
From a very material standpoint one could also see if
there is some tangible motivation that leads so many of the
faithful to leave early. Is there a bottleneck in the parking lot?
Are Mass schedules too close together? If there are real
practical inconveniences involved, then theology alone will
be ineffective in changing people's habits until these are
resolved.
Let us leave courtesy aside for a moment and return to
thanksgiving. The Mass is something we celebrate together
as Church and as a worshipping assembly united to Christ
through the priest. It is not just something we do as individual
Christians.
In the same manner, our thanksgiving for Mass cannot
be reduced to the individual sphere and must be carried out
as Church. This collective thanksgiving is done through the
priest at the closing prayer to which all respond "Amen."
Those who dont are letting their habits of haste pull
them out of what should be an atmosphere of reflective
gratitude.
Moreover, there has to be an effective period of silence
after the Communion song and that the priest, deacon and
other ministers lead by example, dedicating some moment to
silent reflection at the chair.
Finally,

Precisely when the Mass is about to end, and we go to

take up the work of every day between toil and dangers, the
Church reminds us that we must live under Gods hand and
that under his hand we will be guided and protected. In this
way the whole essence of the Mass will be, in a certain
sense, incorporated with our being and continued in our life
of each day.
The final blessing and dismissal send us forth to transmit
what we have received to our brothers and sisters. If we
leave immediately after Communion, then we lose this
important component of our spiritual life.
