A SECURE FUTURE FROM

FRAMEXPRESS

an Davis, Sales Director at frameXpress looks at a

few key areas of investment for homeowners after
the March Budget.

With the Chancellors final budget before the election

now well out of the way, some of the ramifications will
undoubtedly become a focus for a while across many
industries. For the housing market there will certainly
be many people looking to get onto the property
ladder in the new walking tall Britain, where they
will undoubtedly benefit from the new help-to-buy
ISA. A great support for first time buyers where the
government will now add 50 to every 200 they put
away as part of a deposit.
Boosting the housing market has been central to the
coalition governments efforts to stimulate economic
recovery for quite some time. Certainly there will
be more fluid cashflow to consider as both new
homeowners and those looking to move, will evaluate
their properties and make subsequent investments
into the areas that will give true added value.
For frameXpress it has always been imperative to give

Homeowners need to understand the benefits of

such as composite doors. Small and simple
aspects such as ensuring the doors and frames

customers more than just an end product, preferring
instead to offer a range that provides total reassurance
in terms of performance, safety and durability.
Being able to offer homeowners lasting guarantees
about the complete product without hidden added
extras has helped customers to gain ground. Frequently,
home security has proven a major selling point that has
led to repeat referrals for many frameXpress customers.
Incorporating premium products such as Yale and
thumbturn locking systems gives the sales approach
an advantage with these already incorporated into the
finished product cost. Furthermore, industry standards
March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv | 4

such as PAS 24 and Secured By

Design provide consumers with
added assurance and complete
peace of mind.
frameXpress customers will soon
be able to download or direct
homeowners to useful data sheets
regarding security criteria on the
website www.frameXpress.co.uk
Whilst covering basic security
aspects
may
seem
almost
unnecessary for some, for many
frameXpress customers, advising
on aspects of security has been the
difference in winning or losing deals.
This could become more important
as the home improvement market
gathers momentum.
Beyond the obvious aspects of not
leaving windows open or unlocked
anywhere in the house, there are
salient points regarding the products
which discerning consumers buy
into when purchasing. Explaining
the difference in window options
from double to triple glazing and
the safety aspects these provide,
as well as the Security standards
that put burglars off, impresses
the homeowners when making the
pitch.
The frameXpress window range has
been developed with security being
as important as thermal efficiency,
which has helped to reinforce
customers business profiles when
approaching homeowners.
The company is contracted to supply
various styles on a wide range of
projects, where consideration has to
be given to potentially vulnerable
people, such as hospitals and
schools. Customers therefore rely
upon the integrity of the products
and associated guarantees when
approaching the end users.
Likewise door security continues
to play a big part too in respect of
entrances and house renovation, as
the market looks to gear up for a
boost. Whether at the front, rear or

side of properties, without doubt the

Secured By Design standard as well
as other industry accreditations,
gives
added
benefits
when
discussing security guarantees.
Equally, garden rooms, sun rooms
and conservatories, with their
dynamic but open style design, have
the potential to leave consumers
a little concerned about security.
These worries have been minimised
by framexpress customers who have
been able to reinforce the safety
aspects that are incorporated into
the companys striking patio and
bifold door options, making them
a popular choice with home buyers
looking to add a stylish addition to
their renovation projects.
The premium production standards
combined with superior locking
systems that are incorporated into
the companys composite doors also
have made the frameXpress range
easy to sell to those looking for
optimum security on their property.
Homeowners need to understand
the benefits of the technical
advantages to installing products
such as composite doors. Small and
simple aspects such as ensuring
the doors and frames are thick
and solid with substantial hinges
and advanced multi-point locking
systems makes the difference in

winning or losing a sale.

While many consumers will choose
a door based on its appearance
and the glass panels that can be
incorporated, our customers are
gaining increased sales due to
the PAS 23 and 24 certification
guarantees.
Understanding that customers need
to be able to provide end users with
facts and features that will induce
trust and ultimately sales, are facts
which remain a pivotal part of the
customer satisfaction guarantees
for the frameXpress team.
The industry is moving forward
steadily, and post- election rising
property values will continue to
compensate for stagnating earnings
and further fuel consumer spending,
perhaps because the government
incentives and rising prices will
make home-owners in general feel
richer. That is great news for this
industry, where renovation will help
to reinforce Britains continuing
housing recovery.
frameXpress offers a broad range
of pvc-u and aluminium windows,
doors and conservatories to both
the domestic and commercial
markets. For more information on
the ranges available please call

Osborne Gets Lukewarm Response to Budget

The announcements made by Chancellor
George Osborne in his Budget last week
did not have many trade associations in the
building sector jumping with joy.

he Construction Products Association (CPA)

said the Budget provided few surprises but was
please with the announcement of a Help to Buy
ISA scheme. It believed that this move could stimulate
home-buyers interest in the near term and house
builders confidence in the medium term; a welcome
aid in fighting what the CPA sees as flattening demand
it forecasted for the private housing sector after the
uncertainty of the General Election.
Of particular interest to us will be the review of business
rates flagged by the Chancellor and the related issues
of capital allowances for plant and machinery, all of
which has a very real effect on inward investment, said
Diana Montgomery, Chief Executive, CPA. Finally, the
wider industry, particularly small to medium enterprises
(SMEs), will recognise the impact of the governments
plans to abolish Class 2 NICs in the next Parliament.
The real improvement in this case is not the nominal
contribution amount 137 per annum but rather
the savings by removing another regulatory burden
and overhead, which is likely thousands of pounds and
many hours of time which SMEs can focus elsewhere.

in sales stemming from the new Help to Buy ISA, it

is disappointing not to see further measures to help
people improve their homes, particularly around energy
efficiency, stated John Newcomb, Managing Director,
BMF. Our members would have been delighted to
see a reduction in VAT for repair, maintenance and
improvement (RMI), which would have really cemented
the long term economic growth in the merchant sector.
Mr Newcomb went on to state that reforming VAT in
this area would have the added benefit of helping to
tackle the black economy, which currently significantly
reduces the Chancellors tax take on home improvement
work.

SIN OF OMISSION

TRAINING IS KEY

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) could

hardly conceal its disappointment on what it saw
as a desertion of sustainability credentials by the
government.
This Budget speech referenced growth 14 times, but
carbon not at all it has done little to help grow the
low carbon economy and little to meet real housing
demand, declared David Hopkins, Executive Director,
Wood for Good, on behalf of the Timber Industry Accord.
Initiatives like the new home ISA and housing zones
will provide some assistance in the building market
and new projects like Swansea Bay will in time help
to decarbonise the grid. But, direct investment now
in new low-carbon housing schemes made from truly
renewable materials would act as a great economic
multiplier, create a legion of skilled jobs and reduce
carbon emissions here and now while also reducing
energy demand for the future.
The feeling that Osborne had missed an opportunity
to press forward with energy efficient policies was
mentioned by the Builders Merchants Federation.
While builders merchants may see a long term boost

The message that the Federation Master Builders (FMB)

wished to focus on was the apprenticeship vouchers
mentioned by George Osborne.
Its been a long and bumpy road since the Richard
Review first touted the idea of putting the purchasing
power back in the hands of the employer but the
government has finally set out a clear direction of
travel in terms of its apprenticeship funding reforms,
said Brian Berry, Chief Executive, FMB.
Mr Berry believed the new digital apprenticeship
voucher model was a vast improvement on what
was formerly proposed. However, he still had some
concerns about the potential for this new system to add
additional administrative burden for small firms. To
counter this, we will be working closely with the next
government to minimise any added bureaucracy. For
SMEs, bureaucracy is the biggest barrier to engagement
in any scheme so industry and government must work
together to help ensure this new system does not have
a detrimental impact on apprenticeship numbers.
At the time of going to press, MYTTV had not received a
Budget response from the Glass and Glazing Federation
(GGF).

Which Way for

Ecobuild?
An event that once was billed as Interbuild with green credentials
appears to be drifting reports Michael Gannon

ver the years of covering

exhibitions, one aspect that
is always noticeable is that
when they go well, your magazine
is inundated but when they do not,
the spin machine doesnt just go
into reverse, it disappears.
This appears to be happening with
Ecobuild where, despite a number
of urgent requests for information
on the event, a deathly silence
prevails. As far as the glass and
glazing side went, there was a scant
presence and as a show in general,
all pretence that exhibitors had to
prove their green credentials has
long been a thing of the past.
At the time of going to press, no
figures have been supplied by UBM,
the organiser, on attendance figures
and how they compared with 2014.
With 800 exhibitors, it was about
the same size as the previous year.
This falls well short of the 1,300
exhibitors in 2011 when the event
reached its height. For the last
few years we have had the usual
ploy of wide aisles, open spaces
and partitions; all indications of
an exhibition that is losing its
momentum.
Of course, there were other things
going on and this writer saw the
sight of that old political bulldog,
John Prescott heading for the
exit after a no doubt pugnacious
performance. But if we are to regard
Ecobuild as an exhibition first with
add-ons, it has seen better days.

EXHIBITOR RESPONSE

Below is the first part of what

exhibitors thought of Ecobuild.
7 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

EPWIN GROUP

Alan Calverley, Head of marketing

at the Epwin Group was generally
upbeat but observed that Ecobuild
appeared to be quieter this year.
The show was possibly quieter
than previous years but the quality
of visitors higher and with larger
projects in mind. With a new layout
for next year the show may take
on a new direction and become a
general building rather than Eco
onewithout doubt the solar
element of the show has declined,
meaning in terms of space the
overall feel is less stands.
However, speaking specifically
about the Epwin Groups own
performance, he was happier. An
optimistic industry turned out for
the first big exhibition of the year,
and the quality of leads for larger
projects bore this out, he stated.
Our Through the Ages theme
attracted a great deal of interest
and got people talking. Many new
and existing products were on
display and the vertical sliding
window, alongside the new solid
core door were the real stars on the
stand.

INTERNORM

Ecobuild is a great way for our

potential customers to really see
the true quality of our products,
said Andreas Simmer, Managing
Director, Internorm UK, talking
exclusively to MYTTV. This year
was no different. It also provided
the ideal opportunity to launch our
new Panorama HX300 product.
This is a timber/aluminium

window glazing system that

can be integrated completely
into the brickwork meeting the
growing trend for frameless glass
architecture. It was great to see
the interest in how the unlimited
design freedom of this product
can really help create open bright
living environments, explained Mr
Simmer.
In terms of visitors to the stand, over
the three days Internorm stated it
saw a good mix of people allowing it
to have contact with those working
on both smaller self-build projects
as well as architects working on
much larger developments. For
architects specifically, as well as
the products themselves, we also
found that there was some good
interest in the CPDs that we offer,
noted Mr Simmer. Overall, we were
pleased with the level of interest
in our company as a whole and the
products we offer.

Ecobuild appeared to be
quieter than in previous
years with only 800
exhibitors compared with
1,300 in 2011 but there
was satisfaction with
business done.

When Glass Shows no Class

A warning has come from the BFRC about
misleading advertising that can get those
making unjustified claims finding themselves
in hot water

he British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC)

has issued a warning that recent trade and
consumer advertisements have been appearing
featuring the claim A-rated glass as standard or similar.
It points out that this is incorrect because there is no
such thing. There is no scheme in the UK that rates
glass in isolation, stated Gary Morgan, Technical
Director, BFRC. All window energy ratings (WERs)
schemes operate in an identical way of rating the
whole window, including glass, frames, spacer bars and
gaskets.
Dr Morgan went on to explain that was not possible
under current European Regulations to provide an
energy rating for glass in isolation from the other
window components. While it was true that certain
glazing specifications are widely used in A and A+ rated
windows, the glazing itself did not guarantee an A or
A+ rating for the whole window, he said. The frame
system also has to be thermally efficient to enable the
complete window to obtain a favourable rating.
BFRC managing director Chris Mayne added that
an advertising claim that a type of glass is A energy
rated was likely to breach the Business Protection
from Misleading Marketing Regulations 2008 (and/or
Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading 2008).

Misleading advertising is described as material that

in any way, including its presentation, deceives or is
likely to deceive the traders to whom it is addressed or
whom it reaches and by reason of its deceptive nature,
is likely to affect their economic behaviour; or, for those
reasons, injures or is likely to injure a competitor.
An offence under the Regulations can attract a 5,000
fine if heard in a magistrates court, or an unlimited fine
and/or two years imprisonment if heard at crown court.
Enforcement is by local authority trading standards
officers.

The Sun Should Shine

on Solar

Despite a number of stutters

the government believes that
solar power should account for
4% of the UKs energy supply by
the end of the decade

he reason for the reduction

is that the inducements for
householders and businesses
to install solar panels resulted in
greater than anticipated demand.
This gave the government what it
believed was just cause to reduce
Feed-in-Tariffs (FiTs) on large
installations.
At the time the Department of
Energy and Climate Chance (DECC)
was severely criticised for the
move and a number of solar energy
companies collapsed.
The situation now is that with solar
panels falling in price by as much
as 70%, demand has drawn in
Chinese manufacturers and led the
government to withdraw subsidies
on large solar farms above 5mW by
the end of this month. This, in turn,
has led to a boom in installations
to beat the deadline with the Solar

Only 35% of the cost

of solar is the price of
the panels, the majority
cost is the installation
and that will only come
down if we have a large
and thriving competitive
industry in the UK.
9 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Trade Association (STA) stating that

there had been more capacity had
been installed in the first three
months of 2015 than in the whole of
last year. However, the STA predicts
business will collapse after that by
as much as 80%.
We need subsidies for another
few years maybe five before we
can compete with fossil fuels in
the UK, explained Leonie Greene,
Spokesman, STA. Only 35% of
the cost of solar is the price of
the panels, the majority cost is
the installation and that will only
come down if we have a large and
thriving competitive industry in the
UK. The governments decision to
pull out subsidies is an own goal; it
will delay the moment when solar
can compete with fossil fuels.

SOLAR POTENTIAL

For its part, the Energy Secretary,

Ed Davey, spoke up the potential for
the solar industry. In a conversation
with the BBC he predicted supply
from this renewable source would
rise up to 14GW of solar by 2020;
up from 5GW at the end of 2014.
The current percentage is a modest

1.5% of total UK annual electricity

that will rise to just under 4%.
On that ground Mr Davey felt the
move to end subsidies on large
installations was justified but would
continue with domestic ones. This
should encourage those glazing
companies that have diversified
into this sector, to remain and the
forthcoming General Election is
unlikely to see a radical change in
the market.
The UK figure for installations of
both non-residential and domestic
now stand at 650,000.

NORTH OF THE BORDER

A number of leading members

of the STA have launched a new
Scotland branch. STA Scotland is
set to become the leading voice
for solar in Scotland, advising and
developing policy with the Scottish
government and raising awareness
of the benefits of solar. STA Scotland
has been backed by a number of
prominent figures in the energy
industry, including Fergus Ewing,
Minister for Business, Energy and
Tourism in the Scottish government.

DEATH OF THE FAX

But is print really a thing of the
past, or does it still hold a place in
the ever-developing digital age?
Richie Thornton, Director of The
Consultancy, said: When working
with our clients we always use the
analogy of 1,000.
If you had this disposable amount
of money to market your business,
where would you spend it?
Would you spend it on limited
brochures and leaflets to send

you create an integrated online

your website and designing a
trackable e-mailer to be sent out
and monitored?
With the UK consumer spending
44bn online last year, we think the
answer is pretty obvious.
Printed material has so many
downfalls. On top of environmental
issues, theres also the case of
maintaining the users interest
and how many people really keep
brochures on file.
They often end up in the bin!
But although the window and

to embrace the digital age, The

Consultancy is keen to stress that
print materials can still be of use.
Richie added: One thing weve
worked on over the past few years
is bridging the gap between print
and digital, a way to do this is by
using augmented reality.
This involves the use of a print
trigger, whether its your company
logo, a photograph or a word.
Through accessing your devices

it over the trigger image this can

Make the right decisions, drive

increase profitability
The launch of a new website by The Independent Ratings Company highlights the benefits for industry
leaders who want to use customer feedback to their ultimate advantage.

irector Chris Globe explains I think there are

few of us now who dont read umpteen reviews
from others every time we want to book a hotel,
a restaurant or a holiday. It is the world we live in. But
what many people dont realise is that this is not just
a fad, it is a very real part of peoples decision making
process and it is here to stay.
The benefits of gaining reviews from your customers
and obtaining what is effectively a third party
endorsement for your company, your products, and your
services, cannot be understated.
There is nothing to fear but much to gain; we work
with so many companies now and all of them will tell
you that they have seen a benefit since they started
using the endorsements of their customers to sell for
them.
12 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Most of the companies who come to us already

key thing is to get them publishing the comments that
their customers make, and to not be afraid of the odd
negative remark thats life and people dont expect

Most of our customers have tried on line review

Network VEKAs MD John Ogilvie

which is up 9% over the previous

Dave Jones also congratulated

First ever National Fenestration

Awards winners event a huge success

A Day To Remember...

n Thursday 26th March, the National Fenestration Awards held their

first ever winners event. From day one, it had always been the aim
of the NFAs to be able to celebrate winners at a physical event. So
that Thursday marked an important step for the awards scheme, and for
those attending and to receive their awards.
The day started in typical British summer time style, wet, windy and rather
chilly. But some excellent staff and equally excellent breakfast made sure
that the climate didnt affect the day. After a few delays due to the traffic,
the group was split up into two teams for the day where they would take
part in some excellent cars and challenges.
The cars themselves were the superb Caterham 7, Land Rover Defender on
a brilliant 4x4 circuit, and some brand spanking new Toyota GT86 Rally
cars that we were lucky enough to be the first corporate event to use them.
Each team took part in one challenge in the morning, and were then
treated to an excellent and relaxed lunch. The energy in the room was
amazing. People were buzzing from their mornings driving and couldnt
wait to get back out.
The afternoon session seemed to fly by. Both teams getting out on track
to test out all three of the cars. The Toyota GT 86 Rally and Caterham 7
both proved extremely popular throughout the day, and are now probably

on the to buy list for a lot of those

who attended on Thursday!
It was back to the Foggarty Moss
suite one last time for more food
and refreshments, where Driver of
the Day trophies were handed out
to the best drivers in each of the
cars. And of course, the main reason
why everyone was there, to pick up
their National Fenestration Awards
trophies for their success in the
2014 campaign.
So with everyone in great spirits, it
was over to the Macdonald Portal
Hotel, Golf & Spa for a chance to
check in and get scrubbed up for
a great night of drinks and relaxed
networking, provided kindly by the
Truemans Windows team.
Great feedback and a future industry
regular event
The early feedback of the event
from those that attended has been
overwhelmingly positive. Jason
Grafton-Holt, Co-Founder
and
Director of the NFAs had this to say:
The reaction from those who
attended the race day has bowled
over the whole NFA team. Whenever
you attempt something for the first

time, you kind of expect a hiccup

along the way. But the staff at
Oulton Park made sure that every
single person there had an amazing
day. The rest of the NFA team also
put in a great effort to make sure
everything ran smoothly.
A massive thanks has to go to the
industry for giving the NFAs so
much support in the past couple
of years. And a massive thanks
too to The VEKA UK Group, GQA
Qualifications and Windowbase, as
without their support for the event,
it simply would not have happened.
Were already looking forward to
the next winners event, and Im
pretty sure everyone who attended
this one will want to be part of the
next one too! Were hoping this can
become a regular industry event
that everyone can look forward to.
The National Fenestration Awards
are already looking to prepare
for the next winners event, with
main event sponsors now being
sought. Window Ware are already
the first to sign on for 2015, with
more companies to be announced
in the coming weeks. So with a
limited number of main event slots

complement the appearance of
traditional properties and they
are a style which many frameXpress
customers are incorporating more
frequently into renovation projects.
Renovating and fitting sash windows
is a skill that requires installers to
have professional affiliations or
accreditations, which reflect the
craftsmanship involved in restoring
period homes in accordance with
Building Regulation stipulations.
Most recently frameXpress was
contracted to supply all new sash
windows for a renovation project in
Essex where it was stipulated by the
local authority that aesthetics must
match the style of the property and
surrounding area.
For the end users it was considered
a major investment in a property
that they wished to fully restore
before looking at selling in a
housing market that is starting to
look buoyant.
Sash windows were introduced from
France originally in the mid 17th
century, after the Restoration period
and have become increasingly
popular as a style since then. Early

sashes had the box frames exposed

and finished with an architrave
surround, which was set flush with
the outer face of the wall. This was
a style that remained common in
house design until the mid 18th
century before being revived again
in the early 20th century.
Since then the evolution of the
sash has introduced many styles of
window including those with sash
horns and less panes, which became
popular from around 1840 onwards.
Ian
Davis
Sales
Manager
frameXpress comments, Today,
replacement sash windows make
a stunning finish to period homes
and it does not have to be a hugely
expensive investment to give
windows a new lease of life.
For modern homeowners it is also
all about investment in a property
that they are lovingly restoring to
a former glory, and as such they
want only the best in terms of
appearance, thermal performance
and ease of use.
In the south of the country it is
noticeable how sash windows
are increasing in popularity, with
large-scale refurbishments being
completed such as those of the

Savoy and Connaught hotels.

Equally homeowners in general
want to retain a little old world
period charm and authenticity,
which is proving a very positive
selling point for frameXpress
customers.
Ian Davis concludes, Our range
lends itself well to restoration
projects and enables customers to
broaden their business, giving them
scope to offer a little more than
just the standard window styles
and colours. Certainly, there is no
shortage of enthusiasm regarding
the benefits of installing sash
windows.
frameXpress fabricates only the
very best in quality windows,
doors and conservatories from the
companys head office in Telford
that encompasses a 30,000 sq.ft
production facility.
Competitive
pricing together with years of
manufacturing experience gives
customers complete peace of mind.

TRIPLE DOG BOLTS FITTED AS STANDARD TO TRUEDOR

The latest product enhancement from IG Doors for their Truedor range is the inclusion of Triple Dog
Bolts as standard. Speaking for the company Sales and Marketing Manager Richard Kirman explained.
For us, wanting to sell our product to the consumer market through our installers it is really important
that we understand the needs and wishes of that market.
Security remains a significant factor in the buying process and that is why we have developed and are
fitting as standard our new Triple Dog Bolt. It is important to make the point; we are not offering this

This re-development is a direct result of listening to
our customers and delivering exactly what they want.
Its another sales enabling tool to help drive sales

ot on the heels of its groundbreaking Genesis vertical

the same for bi-folding doors.
The Imagine Fold and Glide

you will notice is the aesthetics.
It has clean and contemporary

the need for flying mullions. The

The thermal efficiency of the

another key selling point. It offers
superb thermal performance and it

to BS6375: Part 1 Weather and
BS 6375: Part 2 Durability to add
further evidence of its qualities in
this area.
The Imagine Fold and Glide door

Mark concludes, We believe it is
important to bring products to the

different and innovative. Its good
for our business and its good for
our customers businesses, as the
success of our Genesis vertical

confident that the Imagine Fold
and Glide is about to do the same
for the bi-fold door market and are

78% of installers say composite doors

will grow in 2015

ne of the biggest industry surveys recently

completed forecasts strong growth for the
composite door market. Researched by DoorStop in January 2015, 1,020 companies were surveyed,
with a net 73% forecasting an improvement in sales
(78% predicting an increase less 5% expecting a fall).
A sample of over a thousand is large for the industry
so the findings are robust, explains Patrick Dean,
Door-Stops Head of Sales and Marketing. The figures
suggest very strong growth for the overall market.
Almost half (45%) of respondents said they were very
optimistic for composite door sales with 33% saying
2015 should be better than 2014. Only 5% of those
surveyed expect worse sales.
Installers are optimistic and rightly so, adds Patrick.
Consumer confidence is high and the falling price of
oil means people have more disposable income. All
this is good news for home improvements generally

42 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

but composite doors are also benefiting from the

continuing decline in PVC panels. Theres still a huge
market to go for (as shown by Palmer Research and
D&G Consulting ). Its looking good for the composite
door market in 2015.

Imago redefines timber

sliding doors!

erfect for the UK climate, Imago Lift & Slide is

the definitive timber wide-span door for design
led homes. The super-slim wooden frame
makes it an exciting choice for extensions,
sunrooms and orangeries where style and performance
is paramount.
Imago is the stunning timber lift and slide door system
from AGB, Italys largest window and door hardware
manufacturer. Widely specified, Imago is a leading
wooden sliding door in mainland Europe. In Italy there
are 130 companies installing Imago Lift & Slide Doors
and 600 architects subscribing to its online design and
specification service.
Imago frames the view with a sightline down to just
2cm. Unlike most wooden doors, Imago has a sash
slimmer than even some aluminium lift and slide doors.
The hardware disappears into the frame and the silky
smooth slide mechanism is invisible. The Imago Lift &
Slide Door is so innovative it has been selected as one
of the best industrial designs by the ADI Index 2014,
alongside an impressive line-up of new offerings from

luxury brands renowned for beauty and performance

including Ferrari, Maserati and Ducati.

The result is a huge glazed window door that offers an

uninterrupted view. The combination of elegant style
and industry leading thermal and weather performance
has redefined what is possible from a timber door. Our
British weather means large doors stay firmly shut for
most of the year. Open or closed, Imagos slim design
means there arent multiple frames to break up the
view, creating a light filled space.
Installation companies and timber manufacturers who
target the premium market will find Imago Lift & Slide
Doors a big attraction for homeowners and designers.
AGB has everything architects need with easy to
download drawings and specifications to add straight
into their design project. Manufacturers are given
all the high performance test certification needed to
produce fully CE compliant doors. Companies can find

NEW CNC MACHINING CENTRE INCREASES

COMPOSITE PRODUCTION AT HURST

urst Plastics is well on course for its best

year ever in composite doors after making
a significant investment into new machinery
and additional production space to satisfy growing
demand.
The Kingston-upon-Hull based company has
almost doubled its dedicated floor space for
composite door processing and has just taken
delivery of an additional CNC machine to increase
production capacity to 600 doors a week.
Hurst is one of the first companies in the industry
to commission the Biesse Rover A 5-axis machining
centre an upgraded 2015 model. The Rover A is
able to machine from a vertical or horizontal axis
to ensure precise routing to within a millimetre,
whilst minimising manual handling for Hursts
production team. More energy efficient and
quieter in operation, the new machine will speed
up the processing of Hursts range of standard
composites and composite fire doors to between
7 and 10 minutes per slab. The router is linked to
a sophisticated software programme to accurately
manage and plan throughput either on-site or
remotely.

51 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

The installation of this top specification machine is

part of a major investment strategy at Hurst, which
is designed to enable the firm to keep pace with
its future growth plans. Under the programme,
Hurst has commissioned a new triple head welder
to double its welding capacity, a corner cleaner, a
copy router and an additional extraction unit. The
company has also invested in new high bay racking
to re-organise its second production facility
and create extra floor space. New fabricators,
warehouse operatives and apprentices have been
brought in to help Hurst to stay ahead of demand,
maintain lead times and assure consistently high
standards in product quality.
Darren Glew, Operations Director at Hurst, said:
It is important for us to continually invest both
in new equipment and our manufacturing facility
to help us meet our ambitious plans for further
growth. A significant rise in sales prompted us to
extend our manufacturing capabilities with this
high performance machinery and we are really
looking forward to achieving record-breaking
production targets as a result of this investment.

HURST SHIPS BIGGEST

EXPORT ORDER
T

he first quarter of 2015 has seen Hurst

Plastics export division gather further pace
with the shipment of the companys largest
ever international order for door panels. The
Kingston-upon-Hull based firm has just exported
430 door panels to a major PVC-u and aluminium
window and door supplier more than 3,500 miles
away in Dubai.
This latest shipment of door panels to the United
Arab Emirates marks Hursts growing presence in
the Middle East. Hurst has been catering for an
increasing demand for door panels as construction
rates soar in the region, particularly within high rise
domestic apartments.
Its been a busy few months for the export team
at Hurst. As our biggest international order, this
shipment heralds another exciting phase for the
business as we supply to a growing number of large
building projects overseas, says Tony Appleyard,
Hurst Plastics Export Sales Development Manager.
Until recently, many Middle Eastern companies
would source door panels from Eastern Europe.
Whilst these products are often cheaper, the quality
can however be inferior. This latest order indicates
that the market isnt just price driven, but that it
values good product design and quality as well as
reliable service.
Hurst currently exports to six continents, shipping
its Definitive Collection of door panels from its
nearby coastal port of Hull. The range brings a wide
variety of door and glass styles to the international
market, including bespoke triple glazed panel
options. It includes many exclusive designs and
features the Modern Collection of contemporary
styled continental door panels in coloured, white or
woodgrain PVC-u. www.hurst-plastics.co.uk

some high quality specification

made, so weve already booked to
attend next years show. I think

the secret of our success lay in our

compact stand design, which was
inviting for guests to approach and
also rewarding in terms of product
content. Our floor position gave
us good branded visibility from
distance down a long aisle across
the North Hall and our creative
free-standing stand design meant
we achieved some impactful standout beside the adjacent shellscheme stands.

related to specifier, housebuilder or

commercial
real estate can be a very
challenging business which

investment.
Following the spectacular boom and
subsequent bust of the sector during
the financial crisis between June

a slow and steady positive upturn
for this market. Where previously
the commercial sector had gained
a reputation for instability, now,

back and one of the best selling
investments on the UK market.
This is good news for frameXpress

London has recovered much of the
value lost post financial crisis, where

is great scope within the sector

recovery can be made in commercial

more and more positive.

Liniar a breath of fresh air

for Garrard Windows

he New Year saw a fresh start

for one of the UKs largest
fabricators, Garrard Windows,
as it switched to using Liniar
profiles for its PVCu products.
With a turnover approaching
20m and 170 staff operating
out of an 86,000 ft factory in
Buckinghamshire, Garrards window
and conservatory trade customer
base spans the whole of the South
of England. This successful firm has
grown substantially since it was
formed in 1997 and its changeover
to Liniar looks set to help take the
business forward even further in
2015.
Managing Director Steve Leek
explains why:
To change profile supplier is one
of the biggest decisions a window
manufacturer will ever make. The
thought of having to change so
many settings on so many machines,
re-train factory staff to different
working practices, update computer
software, re-train the office and
sales staff on the new products
and so much more, is very daunting.

74 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

So daunting, in fact, that many

companies who consider making
the change will end up staying with
the devil they know.
If you manufacture and supply
direct to retail, where you deal with
new customers all the time, that is
where the scary part ends. But if,
like us, you supply only to regular
trade customers, the reaction of
your customers can act as more
of a deterrent than the effects
on your factory and staff. In my
experience, the phrase people dont
like change, is particularly true of
window installers!
However, the world is constantly
changing. New products are
designed and old ones are
developed, and the window industry
should be no different. With the
general push to save energy, there
have been massive developments
in glass technology in recent years
yet many profile companies seem
content to sell products virtually
unchanged from the product they
were selling 20 years ago.
At Liniar, things are different. Ive

known Roger and many of his team

for over 20 years. He has what he
calls a flat management structure,
which means there is an absolute
minimum of management layers.
This means that whoever you are
dealing with at Liniar you will never
be far away from Roger. He is very
much a hands on MD and is always
looking for new ways to improve
and innovate.
Many windows manufacturers
see things that profile companies
dont see, or hadnt thought of
- because, lets face it, they dont
make windows! In my experience,
profile companies in general will
at worst totally ignore you, or more
commonly will fob you off. How
many times have you heard the
phrase Really? No-one else has
ever complained about that! when
you know the whole customer base
must be experiencing the same
issues?
At Liniar they actively seek out
feedback a real breath of fresh
air!
Since first entering discussions
GLAZING

Fabricator & Installer

with Liniar, weve found they simply
couldnt do enough for us. We saw
the benefits of the Liniar system,
but at the same time wanted to
give our customers an edge with
some alternative products that
would be bespoke to Garrard. Roger
literally lent us his technical design
department to help us design our
own suite of bay poles, posts and
couplers, which we had in stock in
time for the change. More recently,
they have helped us design some
new aluminium thresholds, which
we will be rolling out over the
coming months as they come into
stock.
At Garrard we recognise that we are
in a highly competitive side of the
industry, where there will always be
someone who can make a similar
window just a little lower in cost.
So whilst keeping our prices as low
as we can, it is the product range
and, above all, an excellent service,
that we strive to offer. We have, for
example, spent tens of thousands
of pounds on machinery to bend
profile money that we may never
fully recoup so that our customers
dont have to wait weeks for arched
products and then have to put up
with something that is not really up
to scratch.
Garrards values are similar to
Liniars in that it really does try and
treat the customer as King to the
extent that I frequently give out my

75 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

mobile number, and as many can

testify, even answer it whilst on
holiday. So, as much as I didnt want
to force such a major change onto
what is an incredibly loyal customer
base (thank you all!), I felt it was a
case of move on or get left behind
for Garrard.
We are always conscious that we
have to provide an exceptional
service as many of our customers
used to fabricate which means
that if our service isnt up to scratch,
they could easily switch back to
making the windows themselves.
This keeps us on our toes and helps
us to find new ways to make it easier
for these customers to buy from us.
Despite my fears, changing to Liniar
has actually been a lot smoother
than we anticipated. We brought in
engineers to manage the process
and switched over the Christmas
period, so we were ready to hit the
ground running in January.
And thankfully, since switching, the
feedback from our customers has
been overwhelmingly positive. The
windows and doors have been very
well received and we have had no
end of praise about the ModLok
bi-fold and ModLok patio doors.
We tend to make a fair amount of
overspill work for other fabricators,
so we have obviously lost some of
that, but existing customers who
used to go elsewhere for bi-folds
and patios have now started to

At Liniar they

feedback A
real breath of
fresh air!
turn to Garrard for these products.
This has offset any loss of business
and we are also confident we will
pick up work from other Liniar
fabricators as time goes on.
Garrard has a forward thinking
approach within the industry.
Unusually, it gets on well with most
of its competitors and just three
weeks after changing to Liniar, was
already attracting overspill orders
from other Liniar fabricators. Steve
concludes:
Our busiest month is always
November, and last year we peaked
at around 2,800 windows per week,
but Liniar is quicker to fabricate so
we expect to increase this to over
3,000 next November. Roger and his
team at Liniar have the same aims
as Garrard striving to continually
innovate and improve, both in terms
of product and customer service
so our customers can be confident
that we will keep them at the
forefront of the industry.

Network VEKA Brand Ambassador Steve Davis generates interest for AWC!

eading Lancashire Network VEKA installer, AWC

Windows and Home Improvements has reported a
high number of leads being generated from the lifesize cut-out figure of Network VEKA Brand Ambassador,
Steve Davis in the window of its Oldham showroom!
The six-times World Snooker Champion has worked
with leading industry installer organization Network
VEKA for around ten years, playing an active role
in increasing brand awareness through advertising,
marketing campaigns and public appearances.
AWCs Managing Director and owner, Michael Griffiths
explains: Weve been lucky enough to work with
Steve directly through our Network VEKA membership.
A couple of years ago he agreed to join us and take
on all-comers in a Charity Pool Challenge at the
Saddleworth Summer Show a local event that were
proud to partner.
AWC was celebrating its 35th anniversary year and
Steves presence really helped us to mark the occasion
in style. Besides raising donations for Doctor Kershaws
Hospice with the pool competition, Steve helped us
generate sales of 42,000 over the weekend. People
really connect with him and, I dare say, theyre intrigued
to learn what his connection is with the PVC-U glazing
industry!
Colin Torley, Sales and Marketing Director for The
VEKA UK Group adds: Steve, both personally and as
a sportsman, demonstrates all the hallmarks that we
aspire to with Network VEKA longevity, reliability,

77 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

consistency, success, pride and attention to detail. At

first people can seem a little confused as to a snooker
champions link with a glazing industry organization
seeing his image on the liveries for Network VEKA
members vehicles and showrooms, for example - but it
makes perfect sense when you think about it!
The fact that AWC is generating leads purely off the
back of the companys link with Steve shows just
how beneficial the relationship is for Network VEKA
members and we look forward to continuing to work
with him in the years to come.
Steves most recent promotion for Network VEKA has
seen him front a series of radio adverts for member
companies throughout the country, with AWC among
the many businesses that jumped at the chance for
such a recognizable voice to promote their services.
Michael continues: Marketing opportunities like these
free radio adverts represent just one of the many
reasons we value our Network VEKA membership so
highly. If the cut-out of Steve in our showroom window
can generate leads alone, we cant wait to see what the
response to the radio campaign will be like!
Steve also voiced two passages of audio targeted
at homeowners and installers that Network VEKA
installers and fabricators, respectively, can use on their
websites. Interested parties can download the audio

Local Community Bowled

over by Listers.

here
is
nothing
more
rewarding than seeing a
project come to fruition.
Especially when that project
changes the lives of so many
people. Lister Trade Frames of Stoke
on Trent along with other local
businesses, joined forces to assist a
group of keen Crown Green Bowlers
convert their dilapidated clubhouse
into a functional building.
Middleport Bowling Club had long
since lost the financial support of
the local council and was being
self-funded by the patrons, many of
whom were pensioners. With very
restricted funds, the club house,
which had been standing for over 40
years, was falling to pieces around
their heads. Word soon spread of the
bowling clubs plight and Listers, in
conjunction with the likes of local
construction companies Novus and
Seddons, joined the cause to help
renovate the clubhouse free of
charge.
It was a real team effort, remarked
Dave Allen, Commercial Sales
Manager for Listers, and when
Novus asked us to get involved, we

80 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

didnt hesitate.
When Listers arrived on-site they saw
the full extent of the problems the
patrons were facing. The windows
and doors were rotting and a few
of them had been smashed. It was
a real shame to see the standards
that these pensioners were having
to work with, commented Dave.
Our input was to sort out fitting
new windows and doors as a matter
of urgency.
And so work began. All of the
companies
involved
started
donating their time and products
completely free to transform the
club house into a warm, secure and
usable environment once again.
When wed finished our part in the
project, there was still a fair amount
of work needed on the inside of the
building, said Dave, but we were
confident that when we returned it
would look just as amazing inside
as it did on the outside.
And that was exactly the case.
After months of hard work and coordination, Middleport Bowling
Club had a new clubhouse to be
proud of. All of the contributing

Majid Khan, who was effusive in his
praise for the project.
We cant thank Listers and the other
companies enough, exclaimed a
delighted long standing patron
of Middleport Bowling Club. This
club is so important to so many of
the local residents who have been
playing here for over 40 years. To
see this transformation means
we can even use the clubhouse
for other activities such as chess
club, knitting circles and other
community events.
It was a real team effort and

In most cases, a quality installer such as a Network VEKA

member company will probably never have experienced
such problems. Therefore, the challenge in knowing
what to do if such a situation arises can be worrying and
overwhelming. This is where HAS Resolution comes to
the rescue! As we say to all our clients - you look after

success story RegaLead
can certainly boast that its
blazed a trail, with three separate
business divisions exporting now to
more than 80 countries and a listing
in the London Stock Exchanges
1000 Companies to Inspire Britain
report for 2015. Guy Hubble, Joint
Managing Director, explains the
reasons for this to MyTradeTV, and
why he sees the future as bright.
MyTradeTV: The company has been
around for some 30 years now.
When did you think RegaLead was
going to go places?
Guy Hubble: RegaLead has always
been going places but in the last five
years we have been getting there a
lot faster, building the business up
to become the UKs premier supplier
of decorative options for both the
glass and composite door market.
MyTradeTV:
Youve
recently
launched the 26th shade into the
DoorColour range, is colour coating
not something of a diversion from
what RegaLead did previously?
Guy Hubble: RegaLeads business is
adding value through decoration
and coatings have been core to
this for us since the acquisition
of CadRam in December 2009.
With the potential for coatings
in the decorative market, we
bought the business because its
expertise in resin based coatings

and application equipment meant

that we could offer a real solution.
The ColorSpray glass system now
has a global customer base with
systems in more than 40 countries
around the world. We have an

team, which ensures all paint and

for the right application.
MyTradeTV: Do you think theres
such a thing as too much choice
when it comes to colour?
Guy Hubble: In our glass coatings
business there never seems to
be too much even though we
have formulations for more than
4,000 colours, we are still asked to
colour match on average a further
25 per week. This was previously
undertaken at an outside colour
matching facility but as of April this
will be brought in-house to reduce
lead times. For the door market
we understand that the number of
colour options needed to be limited
or it would become a salespersons
nightmare when selling directly
to the consumer. We started out
with 22 pre-mixed shades and
have gradually increased this up to
26 with the addition of the three

Guy Hubble: Total investment to
start with our full system is under
8,000, including the spray booth,
but some smaller companies will
just not have the volume to justify
even this modest investment. We
have therefore entered into a
partnership with DoorCo where
customers can get quality prepped
door blanks, finished with our
DoorColour system, at competitive
prices.
MyTradeTV: How is DoorColour
specifically designed for composite
doors?

Guy Hubble
MyTradeTV: How did you go about
choosing which colours to launch
next?
Guy Hubble: Marsala was launched
to celebrate the Pantone Colour
of the Year for 2015 and the three
shades launched prior to this
followed market research carried
out at the FIT Show, where visitors
were asked to choose their favourite
from a shortlist of 12. We then ran
a competition amongst the trade
press editors to choose the colour
names, and Military Grey, Olive
Grove and Victory Blue were the
winners.
MyTradeTV: Have you seen a
particular trend in terms of colour
choice?
Guy Hubble: Obviously Chartwell
and Anthracite still dominate as they
are commonly used by the profile
suppliers, but we have seen a move
towards bolder, brighter colours
such as Very Berry and Marsala.
Colour choice is very dependent on
personal taste and property type
so its important to be able to meet
any given request. This can be easily
achieved with DoorColour.
MyTradeTV: If Im a small supplier
of composite doors, is DoorColour a
viable option for me?
91 |March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Guy Hubble: When we developed

the paint for composite doors there
were very different considerations
to take into account in comparison
with glass paints. The most
important factors were speed of
drying, gloss retention levels and
adhesion levels of the paint to the
GRP door skin and the cassette
system. Two years of development
work went into the formulation
of ColorSpray GRP and extensive
testing was done on all the major
slab and cassette suppliers
products before we could bring the
product to market.
MyTradeTV: Are there any particular
areas in the door sector that either
excite you?
Guy
Hubble:
Contemporary
doors have been the talk of the
town for the last two years and
working on new glass designs
and development of our own
Inox Glazing system has been a
fantastic journey. Going forward
we believe that the composite
door market will continue to grow
and evolve from what is currently
still a very standardised offering to
being much more design-led. Our
customers will be extremely well
positioned to take advantage of this
evolution because this is the whole
philosophy of RegaLead.
MyTradeTV: Or exasperate you?
Guy Hubble: The never-ending race
to the bottom on price that has
plagued our industry for years is

also evident in the composite door
market. A new composite front door
is one of the biggest value added
improvements that a homeowner
can make both because of
improved thermal efficiency and
aesthetics which add genuine
kerb appeal so why are so many
companies still selling purely on
price and not selling up?
MyTradeTV: What do you hope
RegaLead will achieve from now
until 2020?
Guy Hubble: We have achieved
so much in the last five years
something which was recognised in
our recent inclusion on the London
Stock Exchanges 1000 companies
to Inspire Britain list but I firmly
believe that this is just the beginning
of a long journey and by 2020 we
will have cemented our position as
a leader in decorative coatings for
glass, windows, and doors both at
home and internationally.
MyTradeTV: Finally, we have to ask,
what is your favourite colour?
Guy Hubble: Your favourite colour is
supposed to be an indication of your
soul and being from Manchester,
that has to be red or blue. At risk of
annoying many of my colleagues,
red is definitely the better colour.

Calibre Windows chooses Haffner

irmingham-based

fabricator Calibre Windows &

a Haffner SMR-4 welder installed.
Calibres Co-Managing Director
John Goody said, Haffner was
recommended to us both for the
quality of their machines and the
quality of the service and it has
more than lived up to expectations.
We have been delighted by the
service to date and although
the machine has only just been
installed we can already see what a
difference its going to make to our
efficiencies.
As John says, one of the biggest
benefits of the SMR-4 is the
increased efficiency it provides.
This can be attributed to three key
features. Switching between frame
styles is quick and easy thanks
to the touch screen technology,
so production planning becomes
much simpler. No operator setting

the welder replaces all the existing
tools and set squares that a
conventional machine needs. And
quick release tooling reduces cycle
times, increasing frame output by
up to 30%.
Calibre manufactures and supplies
windows, doors and conservatories
to the trade in Birmingham and the
West Midlands. The company prides
itself on the quality of its product
and service. Its commitment is
perhaps best demonstrated in its
decision to open its own glass shop

area.
John says, We are well-respected

SALES OF TROJANS MEGA EGRESS

HINGES HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED!

ith triple glazing attracting

more and more attention
in the industry it comes as no
surprise to the Trojan Group that
sales of their Mega Egress hinges
have more than doubled in the
last twelve months.
The long
established Mega Egress hinges
can carry up to 40kg which is more
than sufficient for the additional
weight of the triple glazed unit.

Like all Trojan products, the

Mega Egress offers a wealth of
benefits. Aside from being triple
glazing-compatible, it also offers
a true full 90 degree opening, so
it easily meets egress compliance
requirements. The innovative
patented mechanical design also
solves frequent gasket compression
101|March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

problems traditionally associated

with conventional hinges. Because
of its patented design, it does not
move inwards on opening and
consequently restrict the window
aperture, as with conventional
scissor type hinges. The Mega
Egress hinge is available in two
lengths 220mm and 345mm with
two stack heights, 13.5mm and
16.5mm and is a genuinely versatile
hardware product as its weight
carrying capacity means you need
minimal hinges in stock.

Tony Chadwick, Managing Director

of the Trojan Group comments,
One of the impacts of triple
glazing is the need for heavier duty
hardware to be able to cope with
the additional weight of the units.

The Mega Egress hinge can be used

on all side hung applications up to
a maximum sash width of 900mm
but more importantly it can carry
up to 40kg, making it ideal for all
heavy duty applications, including
triple glazed windows. The hinge
also achieves high security (PAS
24 as part of a window system)
and offers excellent compression
characteristics.
It is the intelligent-design and
multi-purpose nature of the Mega
Egress that caters for both double
and triple glazed units without
tying up excessive capital in stock
that demonstrates why Trojans
sales of the product have more
than doubled!

AVOCET HERALDS RISC AUTHORITY

GUIDANCE AS A MAJOR STEP FORWARD IN
THE FIGHT AGAINST LOCK-SNAPPING

vocet
Hardware
has
welcomed the RISCAuthoritys
decision to incorporate an
explanation of lock-snapping and
the importance of TS007 and SS312
in the fight against it in its latest
Guidance to Occupiers.
Avocet, which
manufactures
ABS snap-secure locks, has long
campaigned for the insurance
industry to play an active role in
helping to curtail the rise in locksnapping and is delighted with
what it describes as a major step
forward.
Lock-snapping is a significant issue
across large swathes of the country
and what makes it so frustrating
is that its easily preventable, said
Rythm Jain Saigal CEO of Avocet.
All we need in order to stamp it
out is for insurance companies to
add TS007 3-star BSI Kitemark or
SS312 Diamond accredited locks
to their list of Minimum Security
Standard products and maybe
take the customer friendly step
of compensating those who have
to upgrade by offering a reduced
premium.
But to date they have maintained
the preposterous stance of insisting
on like-for-like replacements
for snapped locks, meaning
homeowners are doing nothing to
prevent a repeat attack.
We are extremely hopeful that
the RISCAuthoritys publication

Avocet uses Leeds as an example of
the impact TS007 3-star and SS312
Diamond accredited locks can have
on crime figures.
In 2012 Leeds City Council fitted
over 10,000 of Avocets ABS snap

city. Alongside other initiatives this
led to a 36 per cent decrease in
burglaries in the area in the year to
October 2012 which equated to
3,200 less victims in just one year.
In addition, locksmiths across
the country have been quick to
praise the safety of such locks.
Most recently, Bob Callard OBE a
director of Sheffield-based Callard
Security said:
I specified them (ABS) for a
client earlier this year, who sadly
was burgled last week, or rather
he wasnt. His entire street was hit
by a team of snappers who made
successful entries against a range
of properties, apart from his. The
sacrificial element of the cylinder
parted company in accordance with
its design leaving his property safe.
His neighbours have all asked him
why they were unsuccesful, with the
resullt that I have now specified
Avocet for them all.
There is no doubting the
effectiveness of ABS and other

What has been in doubt is the
commitment of the insurance
industry to take the steps needed to
broadcast this message in suitable
fashion.

The Revolutionary DOORMASTER

Letterplate - Designed to Last

vailable in 12 (300mm)
and 10 (250mm) sizes, the
all-new, highly innovative
DOORMASTER letterplate range
from UAP is ideal if customers are
looking for something contemporary
and modern. The DOORMASTER
letterplate has been designed
to fit 20mm-40mm uPVC doors
and 40-80mm composite and
wooden doors, and consists of an
enclosed, rounded flap set against
a shallower frame. This gives a
less intrusive but sleeker feel to
the door. Every DOORMASTER
letterplate is engineered to provide
features which cannot be found on
any other letterplate.

David Jennings, MD of UAP, explains,

The DOORMASTER letterplate
comes with a range of unique
qualities which sets it apart from
similar products on the market.
Unlike the UAP Framemaster
letterplates, it has a robust central
sleeve, which means it is suitable
for waste (mid) rails, and can easily
replace any existing letterplate
without the need to re-jig your CNC
machines. This makes it incredibly
versatile and consumer-friendly.
The sleeve has been manufactured

environments.
David continues, All of our
letterplates open 180 degrees,
meaning that they will not snap
off when opened too far, which
is a common problem with all 90
degree-opening letterplates. Each
letterplate has ultra-flexible springs
which can withstand thousands
of openings without breaking or
becoming affected by daily wear
and tear, making them incredibly
cost-effective.

still have a bookshelf but it has become much more thinned

modern offices are going paperless or in many instances and
perhaps more realistically, a semi-paperless office, its nice
to quickly archive that which we probably wont use in the

The truth is that there has been resistance to reading online

through an initial client referral, looking for an online
ordering system to support its installer customers.
From this, The Consultancy developed an online
ordering portal, allowing installers to access live
pricing and order uPVC windows and Solidor products.
While Truemans has embraced the digital age to offer
customers a hi-tech experience, the company has
ensured they havent lost any of the more traditional
methods connected to the sector.
Richie Thornton, Director of The Consultancy, said:
Its great to see a company with such a strong vision.
Through embracing both traditional and digital trends,
Truemans Windows is appealing to the mass market and
keeping pace with the digital age. This is a company
which has taken great care and detail and knows
where the business is heading. Over the last year we
have worked closely with Truemans Windows, allowing
us to constantly receive constructive feedback and
create a bespoke product. The system also produces
a professionally packaged and branded email to the
customer outlining the full product specifications and
the cost.

128|March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Joe Trueman, Managing Director of Truemans Windows,

said: This new process is the perfect sales tool for
installers, allowing them to instantly send customers
professional accurate quotes just moments after they
have visited. The likelihood of any mistakes is also
dramatically reduced, meaning the whole process is
speedier for both the installer and customer. While
were still keeping traditional methods as an option,
with the successful launch of our new online system,
were confident this will be the preferred method for
most customers.
The Consultancy has been in the industry for over 10
years and provides online solutions specifically for the
window and door industry.
Last year ended on a high when the company was
awarded the Digital Specialist 2014 honour by the
National Fenestration Awards. Richie added: To begin

project is a great feeling, were already working on the
next phase of development.

INTRODUCING THE ENHANCED

FIRSTFILL FROM IN A GAS

SINCE 1992, INAGAS HAS LED THE WAY IN GAS FILLING.
THE MAJORITY OF TODAYS MARKET WHO GAS FILL ARE USING INAGAS PRODUCTS.

irmingham-based trade fabricator Calibre

Windows & Conservatories has just had a Haffner
SMR-4 welder installed. Calibres Co-Managing
Director John Goody said, Haffner was recommended
to us both for the quality of their machines and the
quality of the service and it has more than lived up to
expectations. We have been delighted by the service
to date and although the machine has only just been
installed we can already see what a difference its
going to make to our efficiencies.
As John says, one of the biggest benefits of the SMR-4
is the increased efficiency it provides. This can be
attributed to three key features. Switching between
frame styles is quick and easy thanks to the touch
screen technology, so production planning becomes
much simpler. No operator setting or alignment is
needed because the welder replaces all the existing
tools and set squares that a conventional machine
needs. And quick release tooling reduces cycle times,
increasing frame output by up to 30%.
130|March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Calibre manufactures and supplies windows, doors

and conservatories to the trade in Birmingham and
the West Midlands. The company prides itself on the
quality of its product and service. Its commitment is
perhaps best demonstrated in its decision to open its
own glass shop in order to guarantee quality in this
area.
John says, We are well-respected in the local area
and our reputation means we are steadily growing.
Investing in the SMR-4 welder will help us keep pace
with growing demand without compromise.
Dave Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner says, We
were pleased to receive the call from Calibre, not least
because it came from a referral, which is testament
to the quality we provide. The SMR-4 welder has the
ability to revolutionise a fabricators production processes and Im looking forward to checking back in
with Calibre to see how its helping the team there.

ollowing the purchase of a Stuga

Flowline-3 in 2003 Direct Trade
of Doncaster were so pleased with
the results that they purchased a
Stuga ZX3 in 2007. Being the latest
machine in the Stuga range at this
time the ZX3 proved even better
than the Flowline-3 due to newer
technology and a higher output
so that, with business expanding
quickly, another ZX3 was purchased
in 2008. Further ZX3 purchases
followed in 2012 and at the end of
2014 making a total of five. With all
five sawing & machining centers

Italmac Turn 4 Axis CNC Machining

Centre proving a popular choice
for Haffner customers

affner launched the Italmac range of aluminium

fabrication machinery in the UK market last
year and the range is already proving very
popular with fabricators. Dave Thomas, Managing
Director of Haffner says, All the machines in the
Italmac range represent incredible quality and value,
but the one thats proving to be particularly popular
is the Italmac Turn 4 Axis CNC Machining Centre. Its
a flexible machine offering excellent value for money,
plus comes with a two year warranty for additional
peace of mind, making it the ideal starter machine for
any company wanting to produce PVCu or aluminium
doors.
The Turn 4 Axis machine has been especially designed
to mill and drill aluminium and PVCu bars and work
pieces. The machine is especially useful for machining
operations involving three sides of a work piece and
the electro spindle can be set at any angle from 90
to 90 for the ultimate in flexibility. It also comes
with an automatic tool changing facility as standard,
avoiding the need for expensive upgrades to get the
features you need.
134|March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

The machine is manufactured from electro-welded

steel that is tempered and worked with CNC machine
tools, so offers exceptional build quality. The 3-4 axis
movement is controlled by high precision motors
for superb accuracy every time. The tool magazine
attaches to the back of the moving portal, for ease of
use and compact storage, while health and safety is
covered by a safety light curtain system at the front of
the machine.
Dave Thomas concludes, Increasing numbers of
fabricators are enquiring about new machines,
reflecting growing confidence in the economy. We
work closely with all our customers to ensure they
make the investment thats right for their business.
The Turn 4 Axis machine represents an excellent
investment that will deliver long term benefits for
many companies looking to automate parts of the
fabrication process.

IT'S HAMER TIME - AVOCET

TELESALES TEAM GROWS WITH SUCCESS

hen it comes to telesales

nobody can touch Avocet
Hardwares team, thanks
in no small way to its new telesales
manager, Michelle Hamer.
Michelle, who has worked the

for 22-years, was promoted last
month and the first task in her
new role was to train up four new
members of the telesales team
one of whom, Linzi Wagstaff, was
returning to work for Avocet two
years after leaving.
When I started at Avocet in the early
90s I never for one minute thought
Id still be working here 22-years
later, said Michelle. But when you
have a job that is rewarding, varied
and interesting, and where you are
valued extremely highly by your
colleagues in other departments
and the owners of the business,
then why would you leave?
Rythm Jain Saigal, CEO of Avocet
137|March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Hardware, added: Call centres

have given telesales something of
a bad name, but to us it is a vital
element of our business strategy,
and as such is staffed solely by
industry professionals with the kind
of expertise that would make our
competitors green with envy.
The nine-strong team, which
boasts over 100-years of industry
experience at Avocet alone, operates
across both outgoing and incoming
calls. It is tasked with everything
from generating new appointments
for the field sales team, through to
developing existing business, and
on to ensuring key accounts are
kept informed on all company and
product developments and have an
industry expert on-call whenever
they need them.
The growth of Avocets telesales
team is the latest in a series of
departmental expansions that
started in November 2014 with

the appointment of three new

field-based business development
managers. One month later Avocet
announced the creation of up to 20
new jobs following the doubling of
its warehouse capacity. Such is the
level of growth, the Jain family has
now invested close to 15million
in the company since buying it in
February 2012.
We have had to spend heavily to
bring Avocet back up to a position
where it can once again stand
proudly at the head of the market,
but we are now in a position where
we are close to achieving that aim
and are now thinking more about
recapturing, if not surpassing, the
market dominance Avocet enjoyed
pre-2012, said Rythm.

aluminium fascia extrusions to enhance the external

appearance of a Global conservatory roof. The original
PVC-U guttering components can then be put back insitu, now neatly hidden behind the impressive orangery
fascia.

With over 4 million existing conservatories currently

gracing British homes, many of which will be in need
of refurbishment to replace weathered frames and
original polycarbonate glazing, there is no doubt
that the installed park of conservatories is getting
older every day and presents a substantial sales and
marketing opportunity.

On the inside, a Global Summer full height internal

audio speakers or feature downlights as required. This
internal design improvement option is easy to fit and

What a great time to be in the solid tiled

conservatory roof market!

oe Leeming Sales Manager for Supalite Roofs

shares his excitement about the future of the solid
tiled conservatory roof market.

Perhaps it is the start of spring, those first signs that

daylight is more prominent than darkness but I cant
help feeling that this is a great time to be in the solid
tiled conservatory roof market.
For us as roof system designer and manufacturer it
feels like there are just so many great opportunities
ahead. Sales of our Supalite products are at an all time
high, and the number of fabricators manufacturing our
system, and installers fitting it are growing by the day
literally!
My excitement for them is even greater than the
excitement I feel for us as a company. We are all in a
growing market, but for them the sales opportunities
are even bigger. If it is a new-build application every
solid tiled conservatory roof of course brings with it the
sales of windows and doors, often bi-folding doors with
the added financial value that they contribute, and if it
is a replacement roof it is a brand new opportunity in
itself which would not come along if they were not in
the market.
The market for solid tiled conservatory roofs is
estimated to be around 1 million and as a sector we
have not scratched the surface of the demand yet.
It is why those companies who have already discovered
solid tiled roofs and have chosen a quality supplier are
already in such a great position to maximise the sales
opportunities the better weather will bring.
143|March 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

But for those companies not already taking a solid tiled

roof product there is still time to get on board. The
Supalite network is expanding all the time and there
are still areas of the country where we are looking for
fabricators and for installers. but the gaps are closing!
I wouldnt leave it too long if you are thinking about
getting involved in the solid tiled roof market. Our
existing range of products outstanding, but the great
news is that there will be more to come! We are a
company which will not stand still, we will be looking
to introduce new and innovative products to support
our existing fabricators and installers and those who
choose to join us in the very near future.
It really is a great time to get involved. You can contact

Mike had left a lasting impression on him as Mike

this situation and even though Mike was clearly there
as a professional to carry out his role, Mike talked me
through the process prior to starting, in a very calming
manner, making me feel at ease with him. Throughout
the rest of the inspection, Mike communicated very
well. The other thing that left a huge impression
on me is how Mike dealt with my customer, he
demonstrated excellent people skills and I could see
my customer felt very happy with the situation.

Craig went onto say that his dealings with Certass
