Backpacking Europe
by David Ardagh

Backpacking through Europe is the ultimate travel experience.

Once out of the plane, through customs, and on the ground,
the choices are limitless.
It is so easy to get from country to country by plane, train, ship, or bus, let alone the thousands
of edgy and stylish hostels available to lie down for the night and meet fellow travellers.
Having spent 3 and a half months on the fly through Europe myself, I can certainly vouch
that it’s a journey like no other.

My adventures began in London, a great starting off point for any European journey. What a
relief it was to grab my backpack, get on the train, and realize that everyone spoke English and
was happy to help a lone traveller find their way. Another amazing plus to landing in London is
that it’s an eclectic blend of Indian, Italian, American and traditional British pub fare, often all in
the same block! I stayed at one of a group of UK hostels called the Globetrotters’ Inns, which
are well known for their cleanliness and lavish amenities. There is even a movie theater in this
hostel! The Globetrotter’s Inn was a great place to make friends, as was the Ashlee House hostel
where I also stayed. I am still in touch with some of my fellow backpackers from those
hostels who have become lifelong friends.

From London, I travelled all over Europe. I used two Eurail passes for
the 3 and a half months, which may have been the best decision I could . . . I used two Eurail passes for the 3 and
have made. My rail pass got me some amazing discounts within Europe
including cruising from the white cliffs of Dover at sunset to France, and a half months, which may have been the best
also cruising from scenic southern Italy to the bountiful shores of Greece. decision I could have made.
I also got to enjoy some fantastic scenery passing through the mountains
of Switzerland and feel like old world nobility with a free first class upgrade in Spain.
Flights within Europe are cheap and cheerful—Ryanair and Easyjet are two airlines that
go wherever one might feel like heading to at the drop of a hat for unheard of prices
(one penny from London to Dublin, anyone?)

The real highlight of travelling as a backpacker throughout Europe is the independence to do

whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want. I would never plan my trip more
than once city in advance. When I was eating pizza in Rome, I would know that the next day
would see me sailing the canals in Venice. The future beyond that was wide open and the
whole continent really is your oyster. This flexibility also comes in handy when you meet some
great people from faraway places and decide to join them for a while, just because you can!

I took advantage of this flexibility in many situations. Some highlights include sleeping in a
hammock with a hilltop view of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain; jumping down canyons
into raging waterfalls in Interlaken, Switzerland; rebuilding ancient stone churches by hand
outside of Avignon, France; and standing in awe of the man-made wonders in St Peter’s Basilica
in Vatican City. Every country has something unique to offer and doing Europe as a backpacker
gives you the chance to experience the best of each one.

All told, independent backpacker travel through Europe is one of the best trips I have taken,
and one that I am happy to share and help you plan your own. Flight Centre is chock-full of
independent travellers who are very savvy about how to best plan a European adventure as a
backpacker. Let us be your unbeatable choice for planning your ultimate European experience!

SPRING2010

A unique work of art with twenty protagonists:

this is Italy with its twenty Regions, small and
large coffers holding different but equally
precious treasures.
The Aosta Valley with its mountain majesty, from Mont Blanc to Mount
Cervino. Piedmont with the intense smell of its renowned wines, such
as Barolo, its Olympic mountains and its baroque style. Liguria with its
colourful sea hamlets. Lombardy with the enchantments of its large lakes,
from Lake Maggiore to Lake Garda. Trentino and Alto Adige/Sudtirol
with the Dolomiti/Dolomiten golden tips.
Veneto with its magnificent villas and artistic towns, like Venice.
Friuli Venezia Giulia with its charm suspended between land and sea.
Emilia Romagna with its ‘Riviera romagnola’, for everyone equivalent
to great fun.
Then famous Tuscany, land of wonderful cities like Florence and
magical hills like Chianti. Alternatively, Marche, with its long beaches,
small hamlets and balmy high grounds. Latium of Eternal Rome and
faithful visiting the Pope. Umbria, green heart of Italy and cradle to the
Franciscan spirit.
Abruzzo and its majestic Gran Sasso, its everlasting glacier, Europe’s
southernmost one. Small Molise rich in great country traditions.
Campania, with culinary delights such as spaghetti and pizza, the
beauty of Capri and Ischia and the charm of Pompeii and Paestum.
Basilicata is the precious guardian to the Caves of Matera, one of the
many UNESCO’s treasures in Italy.
Apulia, with its splendid beaches and architectural jewels like the
Trulli. Calabria and its breathtaking coastline.
The two large islands follow: sunny Sicily, land of important
monuments of the most important past civilizations, and proud
Sardinia with its enchanted sea. Many pieces of one marvellous

Rome
Founded in 754 BC by orphaned brothers Romulus and Remus, a
walk through Rome is a walk through time. From the Colosseum to
the Pantheon to the immaculate aqueducts and roads, the Roman

Florence
Built by the Romans and immortalized by the Renaissance, Florence
affords an unforgettable voyage through timeless art and architecture.
Savour the contrast between the Boboli Garden’s green, groomed

Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella. Priceless works by Botticelli,
Giotto, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci fill the halls of the Uffizi
Gallery. Within the Brancacci Chapel Masaccio’s Adam and Eve are
expelled from the Garden of Eden, their shame and despair palpable.
Meanwhile, on the Ponte Vecchio, the latest generation of craftsmen

Naples
In the 17th century Naples reigned as the undisputed cultural capital
of Europe. Within its National Museum of Archeology lies a bountiful
collection of artifacts, sculptures and mosaics recalling its past as well
as that of Rome, Greece, Egypt, Pompeii and Herculaneum. Music
and song has long defined this sunny city: Naples is home to the
San Carlo opera house, Europe’s oldest working theatre since 1737.
Architecturally, the jewel in the crown is the Galleria Umberto I; its
elegant glass dome and barrelled vaults now host shops and restaurants.
Nearby, the vast Piazza del Plebescito embraces the Royal Palace and
the church of St Francis of Paola. At day’s end, the sun glints on the
towers of the 13th-century Maschio Angioino fortress.
Palermo
This ancient Phoenician seaside colony features a spectrum of
architectural styles reflecting many civilizations: Greek, Roman,
Arabic, Norman, Spanish, French and Byzantine. Each built upon
and embellished buildings created by successive cultures, creating a
wonderful harmony of designs. From the stunning Royal Palace to the

Gastronomy and Wine – the art of living
In Italy, cooking is an art. As is the production of the wines fine enough

pizza are the standard bearers of a tradition of good eating that no one
would wish to do without. The fact is that everyone interprets these
things in their own way, drawing from an unparalleled variety of recipes.

The solution? An ocean cruise! That’s right,

Best of Italy
by Miriam Cloutier, Flight Centre Westshore
“This summer I had the opportunity to travel to Italy with my mom.
We took Trafalgar’s 14-day Best of Italy tour and I chose Trafalgar
Tours for the itinerary and location of the hotels. The best part of
the trip, aside from the country, was how stress-free Trafalgar made
our vacation; their motto is ‘dream, pack, and leave the rest to us’.

When we arrived at the Rome airport our transfers were waiting

and we were off to our hotel which was right in the city centre; a
stone’s throw from some great sightseeing. Our hotel was in a safe
neighbourhood and our tour guide was there to greet us as we
arrived, took care of our bags, answered any questions we had,
and showed us some local sites we could walk to and explore on
our own. I chose to go for a quick nap as by this time we had been
travelling for 36 hours.

On the first arrival day they have a get-together with all your
travelling companions where you meet each other and have a few
drinks. That night it was off to see Rome by night; we tossed a
coin in the Trevi Fountain, admired the Pantheon, saw Vatican City
Rome, Italy
at dusk, and went to St Peter in Chains Cathedral where we saw
Michelangelo’s Moses.

A couple days later we visited St Mark’s Square and happened to

be there when the Pope gave his weekly blessing. I must say I am
not a catholic but I was that day. We went into St Peter’s Basilica
(an amazing cathedral) saw Michelangelo’s most famous Pieta
(now behind glass because of vandalism), and touched the feet of
Bernini’s St Peter.

After Vatican City we crossed the Tiber River into ancient Rome and
visited the mighty Colosseum. The thing about the Colosseum is you
know it’s big but when you are standing there and looking at it you
realize it is massive. When we entered the Colosseum this feeling
London, England Peruvian child came over me where all I could think about was all the violence
and blood that was shed in this building. There is a big cross at the
entrance in remembrance of those who died on its ground.

Day four took us from Rome to Sorrento and Pompeii. In the morning
we went to the Vatican Museums and saw the Sistine Chapel. On our
way to the Bay of Naples we visited the Abbey of Monte Cassino and
as we drove the sky started to get hazy; the hazy was coming from
Mt Vesuvius which was an eerie thing to see. We went to Pompeii
to see the town that was frozen in time back in AD 79. This was a
very neat place to visit, the ruins are amazing, and to see people still
excavating the ruins was really cool. That afternoon...”

15 things you didn’t know

about Britain
Most people know that Britain is home to the ‘Mother of Parliaments’, that Queen Elizabeth II lives

selection of things that you might not know. Aside from being interesting facts, they help make a visit
to these intriguing islands even more exciting!
