regardless of their plans after high

school, be it the workforce, militaryservice, technical college, or a two-or
four-year degree.
Coupled with the opportunities of
CTE, Wisconsin is piloting academic
and career planning. The process will
be in place statewide for the 2017-18
school year to help students starting in
sixth grade identify personal strengths
and interests. Because academic and
career planning is comprehensive,
involvingparents, teachers, and the
community, it gets everyone thinking
early about possibilities that match a
students interests and are informed by
workforce needs. It might mean a student takes certain academic classes to
build a foundation for a career, joins
an after- school activity to gain some
out-of-classroom experiences, or works
an apprenticeship to experience thereal-world of a specific field. Overall,
academic and career planning will give
kids more control over their future and
help them plan to graduate college and
career ready.
Whether our students take one CTE
class to get a glimpse of a certain
career path or they concentrate on a
series of courses that jumpstart a tech-

I have been an advocate for career

and technical education programs
since my first years of teaching. I
couldnt help but notice that the kids
who were truly involved in these classes weredriven; they connectedtheir
learning to theirfuture and that motivated them to succeed.
Thats why Im so excited to join
Februarys observance of Career and
Technical Education (CTE) Month.
During school visits I have made across
the state each year since I was elected
state superintendent of public instruction, students and their teachers showcased the coursework and experiences
that ground CTE in the real world. And,
its not just the classroom that makes
CTE so powerful. Its the co-op programs,
work-based
learning,and
apprenticeships as well as opportunities through Career and Technical
Student Organizations that help students learn aboutleadership, teamwork, communications, and critical
and creative thinking as well as gaining experiences for the skill-based
careers employers say they need.
In Wisconsin, more than 88,000

high school students, or roughly twothirds of high schoolers, are taking CTE
classes in areas such as health occupations, marketing and entrepreneurship, manufacturing, technology and
engineering, agriculture and business,
and family and consumer science.
Partnerships with local businesses and
technical colleges support these course
offerings and allow students to explore
career options, receive industry certification, and earn post secondary credits
while progressing toward high school
graduation. Transcripted credit isone
area thats seeing strong growth.
During the 2014-15 school year, 24,779
students earned technical collegecredits while in high school, a 78 percent
increase from five years ago.
Because CTE students experience
the connection between what they
learn and what a future career
demands, they have a higher graduation rate than other students across
the state. Its a serious mistake to
think CTE is a lesser route. Todays CTE
coursework requires understanding
core academics applied in relevant,
real-world applications. In fact, the
applied academics of CTE are the kind
of skill-building every student needs

a refund is coming their way.
Naturally, you may be interested in
learning how to tip the odds in your
favor for a larger tax refund check.
Deductions can reduce your tax bill, and
there are many ways for men and women
can earn more deductions. The following
are a few tips that might help you earn
a bigger refund next year. And if you
find yourself struggling with your taxes,
be sure to consult with an accountant or
financial advisor.
Establish a home office. People who
work entirely or partially from home may
be entitled to certain tax breaks. You
may be able to deduct portions of your
home utility bills and maintenance costs.
You may also be allowed to deduct business expenses, such as office supplies,
equipment, furniture, and phone bills.

your deductions instead of taking a standard deduction. While this may be more
time-consuming and require more paperwork and proof of receipts, itemizing
often saves taxpayers a substantial
amount of money. Charitable donations,
student loan interest, childcare payments, and money paid for points on a
mortgage all can be itemized and save
money on your tax bill. Talk with a tax
professional to figure out the best course
of action when it comes to deductions.
Buy a home. Home buyers generally have more living-related deductions
than renters. There are many tax benefits to owning a home. In some
instances, a homebuyer tax credit may
be available for first-time homebuyers.
Homeowners also may be eligible for certain tax breaks on home improvements.
These programs vary from year to year,
and it could be in your best interest to
learn which programs are being offered
to get a greater tax refund.
Look for a job. Unemployment benefits are taxed when they exceed a certain value. If you're not employed and
still collecting, you may have a large tax
bill awaiting you if you haven't been
paying taxes on your benefits. Getting a
job may reduce your tax debt, and many
job-hunting expenses are eligible to be
deducted.
Go to school. Various credits and
deductions available to students pursuing their education.
Give to charitable organizations.
Donations made to charities as well as
any items paid for out of pocket to go
toward charitable actions can usually be
deducted from your tax liability. The
more you give, the more you may
receive.
File electronically. If you have not
yet made the switch to e-filing, next
year may be the time to do so. Filing
your taxes manually can be tedious and
you may be more likely to make mistakes
when filing manually. E-filing relies on
computer software to guide you through
the filing process. Also, electronically
filed taxes may result in faster processing and turnaround on your refund.
Use an accountant. Some people
think doing their own taxes saves
money. However, an accountant is up-todate on the latest tax rules and regulations and can help clients reduce their
tax liability. Accountants may know
about lesser-known deductions and
many times the cost of the accountant's
services is offset by the higher refund
the accountant gets you.

Coyote tag-and-track program continues through March

Trapping and ear-tagging of coyotes
that use Milwaukee County parkland in
Wauwatosa and West Allis will begin in
early February and continue through
late March. Researchers from the
University of WisconsinMadison
Department of Forest and Wildlife
Ecologys Urban Canid Project will set
cable restraints (live traps which do not
harm the animal), place ear tags on
trapped coyotes, and release them for
monitoring.
During this phase of coyote management, we want to remind the public
to follow ordinances by keeping their
pets leashed and on the designated
trails, said Julia Robson, Assistant
Natural
Areas
Coordinator
for
Milwaukee County Parks. We also want
to be clear that tampering or interfering with the trapping is illegal, as is
trapping by individuals who are not
authorized by the Parks Department.
Residents throughout Milwaukee
County are being encouraged to submit
reports of coyote sightings. As tagging
occurs in the targeted areas, citizens
will be able to include information on
the coyotes with uniquely colored ear

tags, helping to tie observations and

behaviors to a specific animal.
Residents are asked to submit all
reports at inaturalist.org/projects/milwaukee-county-coyote-watch or use the
related mobile app.
To provide more information about
coexisting with urban coyotes, a series
of educational programs will be offered.
The first program will be presented
Monday, Feb. 22, from 6-7:30 p.m. at
Wil-O-Way
Underwood,
10602
Underwood Parkway, in Wauwatosa.
Researchers from the Urban Canid
Project will discuss coyote ecology, coyote-human conflict, and behavior modification, as well as ongoing monitoring
and management efforts in Milwaukee
County. ADA accommodation requests
may be filed with the Milwaukee County
Office for Persons with Disabilities by
calling 278-3932 (voice) or 711 (TRS).
The Parks Department, Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources, and
Urban Canid Project researchers are collaborating to prepare a coyote management plan for Milwaukee County, to
implement coyote population monitoring, and to conduct educational out-

reach in targeted areas of the County.

The main objective of this collaborative effort is to develop a proactive coyote management program by learning
more about Milwaukees urban coyote
populations, monitoring their behaviors, and determining which specific
animals are exhibiting habituated, or
bold, behavior so that targeted educational outreach can be implemented.
Through a proactive process, we
can address problems before they

become a matter of human or pet safety, said Robson. We can coexist with
urban coyotesnot all are problem animals. The tag and track approach could
help us identify a problem animal and
determine if it needs to be removed. A
targeted approach is necessary in coyote removal because populations reproduce to fill voids.
For more information on the coyote
management program, visit countyparks.com and search coyote.

the first four programs in a new series
of do-it-yourself workshops at Wehr

Hearts under glass: A Valentines Day event at The Domes

Bringing together Valentines Day
and the romantic atmosphere of The
Domes at night, The Friends of The
Domes invites couples to enjoy their
evening out at Hearts Under Glass,
Sunday, Feb. 14, from 5:30-9 p.m. The
Mitchell Park Domes, Milwaukees
Living Landmark, is located at 524 S.
Layton Blvd.
Whether before dinner for appetizers and cocktails or after dinner for
dessert and drinks, your stroll through

Krawiecki, President of Friends of The

Domes. Weve even seen a few people

engaged!
Last year, 600 people attended the
event which features a softly-lit lobby,
the silver glow of the moon in the
Desert Dome, the rush of the waterfall
in the Tropical Dome, and a light show
set to music in the Show Dome. The

at 9 p.m. A complimentary photo commemorates the couples special night.

On view in the Show Dome will be

the most popular exhibit of the year:
the garden train show. This years
theme is Attack of the Giant
Monsters, a spoof of vintage monster
movies, such as Godzilla and Mothra.
Strange beasts are interspersed
throughout the landscape created by
thousands of small and miniature
plants, while G-scale trains traverse 700
feet of track.
Special-event admission rates apply
for this fundraising event of the
Friends of The Domes. General admis-

sion is $10 per person. Membership

passes and coupons are not valid for
this event. Appetizers, desserts, and
