SOUNDBITE:(English) AU SRCC for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeira The head of state of the African Union decided that Africans from the borders of Somalia would come here under the AMISOM to support the people of Somalia through their leaders. That is why Kenya is here, that is why Ethiopia is here, that is why Uganda, Burundi and other police contributing countries including Djibouti are all here. We have no other agenda. The agenda is to work hand in hand with Somalia, hand in hand with the leaders of this country to promote peace because the agenda of the African Union will be compromised if peace does not prevail here, 22. SOUNDBITE:(Somali) Ahmed Mohamed Islam, The Interim Jubba Administration president The Kenya Defence Forces faced a lot of problems in Eel-Adde. I send my sincere condolences to their families. I also deny the ongoing propaganda being spread by people outside Jubbaland, who are accusing AMISOM troops of massacre. This is a pathetic lie. This is a political propaganda by people outside Jubbaland region. I really sympathize with them. The only thing that happened in Gedo region was displacement of people. I request that humanitarian assistance be given to those who were displaced and we should not listen to propaganda from outsiders who are pretending that they sympathize with the civilians. STORY AU SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE TO SOMALIA, AMBASSADOR FRANCISCO MADEIRA MAKES INAUGURAL VISIT TO KISMAAYO The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia Ambassador Francisco Caetano Jose Madeira on Thursday visited Kismaayo to meet with Interim Jubbaland Administration (IJA) President Ahmed Mohamed Islam. The SRCC was part of a delegation of members of the international community, comprising the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) United Nations, Mr Michael Keating, Swedish and Italian ambassadors to Somalia as well as delegates from the European Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Addressing a town hall meeting at the Kismaayo Reinsurance hall,
Ambassador Madeira praised the Jubbaland leaders and its people for accepting to support the 4.5 electoral model in the interest of peace, stability, unity and progress in Somalia. Peace in Somalia is peace in East Africa and peace in the world. African Union's agenda for peace in Africa will be compromised if theres no peace in Somalia. That is why leaders of African Union Members States had asked countries in the region to contribute troops and police to AMISOM, the SRCC added. Ambassador Madeira said AMISOM was willing to suffer and die with the Somali people to restore peace in the country reiterating that the peacekeeping force will remain in Somalia as long as their continued presence is required. Speaking at the same meeting, IJA president thanked AMISOM and the Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) for their huge sacrifices in Somalia and condoled fallen AMISOM soldiers, notably the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) troops following the Al Shabaab attack in El-Adde in January. President Islam clarified that allegations of civilian casualties supposedly caused by recent bombings in Gedo were unfounded and propagated by people operating out of the region for political motives. The Kenya Defence Forces faced a lot of problems in Eel-Adde. I send my sincere condolences to their families. I also deny the ongoing propaganda being spread by people outside Jubbaland, who are accusing AMISOM troops of massacre. This is a pathetic lie. This is a political propaganda by people outside Jubbaland region, the President noted. He however confirmed that there are scores of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the region and requested for humanitarian assistance. The only thing that happened in Gedo region was displacement of people. I request that humanitarian assistance be given to those who were displaced and we should not listen to propaganda from outsiders who are pretending that they sympathize with the civilians, the President added. This was the first visit by Ambassador Madeira to Kismaayo since he took over as Head of AMISOM on December, 4, last year. It also comes days after political leaders in Somalia agreed on an electoral model to be adopted for elections to be held later this year.
