WORKSHEET

TEST PROPERTIES OF ACID BASE SOLUTION WITH

NATURAL INDICATOR
A. Core Competence 1 (KI 1)
Appreciating and practicing the religious teaching which embraced.
B. Basic competence
4.1 Submit ideas on the use of appropriate indicators to determine the acidity of the
acid/alkaline or acid-base titration.
C. Purpose
To prove the characteristic of acid and base solution.

D. Background Information
Indicator solution for pH contain pigments that change colors in acidic and basic
solution. These color changes can be used to determine the relative strength of an acid or base
solution. A pigment found in hibiscus is often called the natural indicator because it can be
used to determine the pH of both acidic and basic solutions. To access the pigment, a small
amount of processing is necessary to produce the hibiscus indicator solution.
The use of Hibiscus flower extract as a naturally occurring acid-base
indicator was studied. This flower contains anthocyanine pigment whose colour depends on
pH. The acid-base equilibrium of this pigment was investigated using spectrophotometric
method. The pk In values were found to be 2.8 and 7.3. The use of this extract in acid-base
titration gave similar result(s) compared to methyl orange indicator.
