2. Course Description:
Course Number: INEL 5605
Course Title: Antenna Theory and Design
Section: 060
Hours: MWF 8:30pm-9:20 pm.
Room: S-204

3. Purpose:
This is a course for students interested in pursuing the Applied Electromagnetic choice

4. Course Goals:

B. Instructor Information Sheet

9. Deadlines for Homework:
Homework is due one week after delivery, at the beginning of the class period (unless
otherwise stated).

10. Student Assistance:

Students with disabilities should identify themselves and talk to the professor to reach any
necessary arrangement.

11. Attendance and Behavior:

Attendance is mandatory.
The only electronic equipment you are allowed to bring to class is your calculator and any
health aid you may need. Cellular phones and pagers are not to be used in class.

12. Instructor Responsibilities:

The instructor will grade exams within two weeks of offering the exam or receiving the
project. The instructor will keep regular office hours and attempt to answer all questions.

13. Course Outline and Schedule:

Chapters from Balanis

After completing the course, the student should be able to describe the radiation mechanisms
and the fundamental antenna principles and parameters and use them to understand
different types of antennas and to analyze antenna systems. The students should also be
able to choose the best type of antenna for different situations and to design antenna
systems given a set of specifications.

Topics
Introduction, radiation
mechanisms

5. Requirements:

Radiation integrals and vector

potentials

Fundamental parameters

All students are expected to: Do all assigned readings and related homework, Work in teams,
Attend all lectures, Arrive on time, Design, simulate an antenna or antenna array, given the
specifications and Pass all tests to receive credit for the course.

Linear dipoles
Loop antennas
Antenna Arrays and mutual
impedance

6. Laboratory/Computer Usage:
At this moment there is no laboratory for this course. But students are required to use existing
antenna design software, such as NEC WIN to simulate and study performance of designs of
antennas. These programs will be used to solve homework problems and for a class design
project.

Broadband antennas and

Impedance matching
Frequency independent
antennas

7. Instructional Strategy:
The course will consist of lectures, discussions and problem solving.
Assigned problems are suggested for each topic. Students are responsible for working on
each of those problems in order to prepare for the exam. Periodically, some of the assigned
problems will be collected as homework and graded. Homework will be assigned for each
section covered and it is due the next week.
