I would like to apply for Post Doctoral Mobility for Research in University of Limerick,

Ireland. In this letter I would like to briefly outline the main motivations of my application to
the concerned authorities and respectful professors to allowing me to avail this opportunity
in support of my future career after realizing the wider scope and facilities of research on
earthquake monitoring.
I had been researching on the topic of Earthquake Generating Mechanism and
Earthquake Warning System Design

as part of my Ph.D. dissertation topic since my

undergraduate years with specialists in this field. I first met with my first supervisor, Dr Om
Prakash Mishra, Senior Geophysicst, Geological Survey of India and one of the greatest
stalwarts of seismology in India. He identified the fact that I wanted to pursue this as a full
time research activity. He agreed and in order to formulate my need for higher study as a
Ph.D. Scholar personally met Dr Mrinal Kanti Naskar, Professor, Electronics and TeleCommunication Engineering, Jadavpur University, Kolkata in October, 2008. To live with my
zest for hard-core research joined Jadavpur University as a full time research fellow for
taking this project further. Initially in order to be an eligible candidate for Ph.D. in
Engineering, I took up courses and modules for PhD qualification equivalent to Post
graduation course related to neural network, fuzzy expert system and other rule based
induction methods under Jadavpur University, Kolkata. I have recently submitted my
dissertation on the topic Earthquake Generating Mechanism and Earthquake Warning
System Design and time by conducting a thorough and detailed study of the past and
present earthquake / seismicity catalogues as the earthquake precursors are found to be
valid in a region which have an anomalous effect prior to and during earthquake. The
physical analysis of computational models are based on three aspects which are the
phenomenological analysis of geo-scientific observations; data definition and validation
through continuous time signals from IRIS, USGS, IMD, SAARC, MoES, ESA observatories
based on catalogs , acceleration-time series data, radon count analysis, satellite image,
earth rotation data and synthetic location data

used in validating and testing earthquake

models. The variations of the stress field precede the main shock by days up to months
trigger the

role of faults in regional deformation.

In the later meta-instability stages,

instability leading to an impending earthquake event is based on the dynamic variation

associated with meta-instability stage is practical indicator of the expansion, accelerated
expansion and linkage of nucleation models that give tested approach for earthquake
forecasting called System of geodynamic monitoring in localness, radon behavior models
and rotation of the earth

to observe the difference in the rate of acceleration or de-

acceleration of the tectonic plate prior to a mega-thrust earthquake using earth rotation

data for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake for different time events to relate seismicity with the
Earth spin changes.
I have always planned to spend some time abroad during my studies. I am very
happy to use the opportunities given to us by the International Office. I chose the Erasmus
program Post Doctoral program in the Department of Physics and Energy at University of
Limerick to work further in the study of earthquake interaction through the construction of
nucleation models. Ian Clancy and David Corcoran who are both Senior Lecturers in the
Department of Physics & Energy, University of Limerick work in the general area of
computational modelling and statistical physics and we have specifically worked in the
modelling and analysis of earthquakes. My study on earthquake forecast methodology is the
determination of a slip-dependent law, will be highly benefited through my experience at UL
via the resources of the Universitys Material and Surface Science Institute ad interaction
with Corcoran and Clancy who have experience in computational modelling can be met
within the Department, published on (Clancy & Corcoran, Phys. Rev. E 80, 016113). The
authorities at UL have also assured me of securing me a visa and accommodation.
My own work over the past 4 years has shown that we can derive far better and more
meaningful information about impending earthquake activity from the study of non-seismic
processes that accompany the build-up of high levels of stress in the Earth's crust. Based on
the expertise I would like to work on research project dedicated to the Development of an
Integrated Geo-Scientific Methodology for Earthquake forecast in identifying
controlling factors in seismogenic plate interface for nucleation zones for
analogous tectonic settings in diverse geo-tectonic settings related to different
seismogenic faults. Such complex analysis on, my sight, can help to solve to us our primary
goal for the forecast of tectonic earthquake. The potential of the research themes outlined
above has been recognized by a recent publication in Journal of Geodetic Sciences and
Central European Journal of Geodynamics, a leading Earth Sciences journal and other
mentioned in my resume. I am sure to exceed your expectations, because of both my
academic and interpersonal skills as well as the experience gained from my tenure as a
Research Scholar with Jadavpur University, SAARC, New Delhi and Geological Survey of
India. For the duration of the mobility, I as the applicant will work under the supervision of
the representative of the host institution of Seismological Laboratory and associated
partners, and will be involved in the international activities of the current research projects
(seminars, workshops). I have always been fascinated by the cultural history and geotectonic setting of Ireland and entire United Kingdom. Unfortunately, I have not had an
opportunity to visit Ireland yet. The Erasmus program would be a unique chance to fulfill this
ambition and experience life in Ireland and learn more about the culture through first-hand
experience and university courses. As an applicant, I will present regularly my scientific

results along with Clancy ad Corcoran at international conferences, attend regular

workshops and quality improvement programmers and publish them in peer-reviewed
journals. As an individual I have good communication skills, I have a good adaptability and I
am open to new challenges to develop myself and push my limits further. This foreign post
doctoral scholarship of 6 months which I hope can be extended to 12 months based on my
Activity Plan chart would be an amazing opportunity for me to delve further into my field of
expertise while helping with the implementation of earthquake risk mitigation strategies in
development plans in India and also in Ireland and the resolution of various scientific
challenges facing my country at present.
