Educational Trust Book of Commitment

Conor Burns MP signing the Holocaust Education Trust Book of

Commitment.
On 19 January 2016 Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns signed the
Holocaust Educational Trusts Book of Commitment, honouring those
who were murdered during the Holocaust as well as paying tribute to
the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate
young people.
Wednesday 27th January marked the liberation of the Nazi
concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the
largest mass murder in history.
In the weeks leading up to and after Holocaust Memorial Day,
thousands of commemorative events will be arranged by schools, faith
groups and community organisations across the country, remembering
all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
Bournemouth and Pooles own Holocaust Memorial Day event will be
held in the BIC on Sunday 31 January, and will include testimony from
two Holocaust survivors, as well as from a Syrian Christian.
After signing the Book of Commitment, Conor Burns MP commented:
Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of
the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and is
an important opportunity to remember the victims and survivors of the
Holocaust and make sure they are not forgotten. I encourage all
constituents to mark the day in remembrance of those affected by the
Holocaust as well as by subsequent genocides, which unfortunately
continue to threaten communities around the globe.
Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational
Trust, said: We are proud that Conor Burns is supporting Holocaust
Memorial Day. As we mark the 71st anniversary of the end of the
Holocaust and the liberation of the concentration camps, it is vitally
important that we both continue to remember and learn from the
appalling events of the Holocaust as well as ensuring that we
continue to challenge antisemitism and all forms of bigotry.

The Hilton, Bournemouth

Conor Burns MP and Cllr John Beesley are shown the Hiltons
fitness suite.
The Hilton on Terrace Road, which opened in December last year,
recently welcomed Conor Burns MP and Cllr John Beesley inside to
see what the new development has to offer.
Conor and Cllr Beesley were shown around the 300room hotel by
Cedric Horgnies, the General Manager. During their visit they were
shown some of the hotels suites and meeting rooms, its ballroom and
restaurant, and its leisure facilities, including a fully-equipped gym and
pool.
Commenting after their visit, Conor said: Tourism is worth around
500 million annually to Bournemouth, and I am delighted that Hilton
have decided to open this fantastic hotel in our town. This investment
is a great endorsement of Bournemouth and what it has to offer.
Moreover, quality developments like this will help to raise standards
across the town and draw in the visitors which are the lifeblood of our
tourism economy. I wish them every success.

Serious mental health incidents up 31% in

The number of serious incidents
reported under NHS mental
health provision in Dorset has increased by 31 per cent in two years.
Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request submitted
by Lib Dem MP Norman Lamb show that the overall number of such
incidents - involving unexpected or avoidable deaths, serious harm,
injury and abuse - are rising in the county.
Mr Lamb, former Minister of State at the Department of Health,
warned people are dying as a result of horrific underfunding in
England.
But Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns said the MP is wrong to
blame solely funding, arguing that the problem is cultural as much as
financial, although he added: It cannot go on.
According to figures released by the Dorset Healthcare University
NHS Foundation Trust, in 2012/13, the number of serious incidents
reported was 95, which rose to 116 in 2013/14 - an increase of 18 per
cent.
In 2014/15, the number of serious incidents was 138 - an increase of
16 per cent year-on-year.
Of these incidents, the number of unexpected deaths was 11 in
2012/13, 27 in 2013/14 and 28 in 2014/15.
But the number of suicides reported during each of the years has
dropped from 19 in 2012/13 to 11 in 2014/15.
Of all NHS Englands 58 mental health trusts, Dorset was in 2014/15
17th when considering the number of serious incidents recorded.
Top of the list was the North East London NHS Foundation Trust with
633 recorded incidents.
Mr Burns said the UK has a cultural legacy of dealing with those with
mental health problems dating back to Victorian times.
For too long, mental health has been the Cinderella service - it is by
its nature often unseen, he said.
Mr Lamb said: People are losing their lives as a consequence of the
institutional discrimination of mental health.
The way that funding gets allocated to mental health always means
that it loses out."

On 21 January 2016 Conor visited Barclays Eagle Labs in
Westbourne to see for himself how Barclays are supporting and
helping the community and local businesses keep their digital skills up
to date.
Barclays have provided a space at their Eagle Labs for visitors to
access the latest equipment and facilities in digital technology. Laser
Cutters, 3D Printing, AV Equipment, Workshop Spaces, Meeting
Rooms, Mentoring, Presentation Areas, Wi-fi and Collaboration
Spaces are all available to the community and local businesses to
create and innovate.
They have hosted over 800 visitors since the New Year from schools,
business people and community groups who have been very
impressed by what is on offer and how it has helped them improved
their knowledge of digital developments and skills.
The Eagle Labs staff will even visit community groups and local
businesses with Tea and Teach sessions to share their enthusiasm for
all things digital, be it dealing with the apprehension some in the
community may have about accessing the internet or about internet
banking to sharing the exciting things that can be open to them to
enhance their business offering or by helping community groups to
embrace new and emerging technology.

Margaret Thatcher's old robes set to go

A Worcester businessman who sparked excitement across the world
after buying Margaret Thatcher's old robes has been offered the
chance to exhibit it in America.
Last week your Worcester News revealed how Neil Westwood, who
paid 84,000 for the robes at an auction, has been fending off
requests from Far East investors to sell it on for a whopping 150,000.
Now the city trader has been contacted by MPs who want to take
Maggie's old garments on a US tour, exhibiting it at the famous Ronald
Regan Library in California.
Conor Burns, an MP in Bournemouth, is chairman of the Margaret
Thatcher Centre, a trustee-led body set to open up a museum
dedicated to her life at the University of Buckingham by 2019.
Mr Burns was a personal friend of Lady Thatcher's, and the
organisation has links with the Ronald Regan attraction, with the exPM's centre set to be largely modelled on it.
He has now invited Mr Westwood to Westminster to discuss the idea
of a US tour, where people at the California facility can see it for a
limited time period.
Lord David Young has also contacted him to say it should be insured
to the tune of 250,000 while in the States, such is the interest in it.
Mr Westwood, who runs his award-winning company Magic
Whiteboard at Blackpole Trading Estate, said: "It's fantastic, I'm going
to tell them the Ronald Regan Library can have it on temporary
display for free as long as they pay for us to come along and see it.
"Conor Burns used to go down to The Ritz every Sunday, or every
other Sunday towards the end of Margaret Thatcher's life to look after
her, he was one of her closest friends at that period of time.
"I am totally happy for them to take the lead and take it out the country
for a period of time.
"She polarised people, there's no doubt about it but we need to
remember that period of this country's history."
The due are now set for talks over the next few weeks to clinch a deal
over the US arrangement.
The peeress robes, which features smeared lipstick on it that Mr
Westwood believes may belong to the dead former Prime Minister,
was up for sale in London at a guide price of just 1,200 just before
Christmas.
Since buying it for 84,480 he's had one offer from Japan for
100,000 and a South Korean businessman suggest 150,000.
Mrs Thatcher, who died in April 2013 aged 87, was British Prime
Minister from 1979 to 1990 and led the Conservative Party for 15
years.
She was handed a life peerage in 1992 and endorsed the idea of a
museum in her memory before she died.
