RAVENSBOURNE COLLEGE OF DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION

BOARD OF GOVERNORS

DIVERSITY COMMITTEE

The purpose of the Diversity Committee is to promote an integrated, proactive


approach to diversity and to advise the senior management team, Governors and
staff accordingly.

Reporting

Diversity Committee reports to the Board of Governors.

Terms of Reference

1 To advise the Board of Governors, through the Management Committee, if


appropriate, on the College’s legal and moral obligation to avoid
discrimination and to promote equality of opportunity;
2 To oversee the embedding of equality of opportunity in the delivery of all
educational activities and related services;
3 To monitor all Human Resources policies and practices and advise
Management Committee and the Board of Governors if they do not fulfil the
principles of equality of opportunity;
4 To promote an increasing representation in the student body of those from
minority ethnic backgrounds, with disabilities or from social backgrounds
with a history of low participation in further and higher education;
5 To promote a culture where all members of staff and students value the
contributions of individuals from different social backgrounds, cultures,
religions, abilities and ages;
6 To promote an awareness among staff and students of their duty to avoid
discriminatory practices and to actively discourage others who may engage
in discriminatory activities;
7 To receive an annual report from the appropriate Senior Manager or
nominated deputy on student applications, enrolments and progression data
to monitor that the College’s equal opportunities commitments are being
met;
8 To monitor the College’s commitment to providing a professional, fully
confidential counselling and advice service to all students;
9 To receive an annual report from the appropriate Senior Manager or
nominated deputy regarding the monitoring of equal opportunities in
employment;
10 To make recommendations in respect of the College policies and
procedures in respect of equality of opportunity and diversity, to monitor the
implementation of these policies and to review their effectiveness;
11 To oversee the College’s response to constructive criticism and any
complaint(s) that relate to harassment, discrimination and equality of
opportunity to ensure the response is positive and supportive;
12 To report regularly to the Board of Governors, including an annual report.

Other Members

The Board of Governors may appoint up to four further members of staff to


represent the views of academic, technical or support functions relevant to the
Committee’s remit or the diversity of the College community more generally.

Quorum
Quorum is 5 members to include the Chair and at least one other member of the ex-
officio membership. If less than 5 members are present then any decisions shall be
subject to the ratification of a quorate meeting.
