The first Republican presidential primary debate without Donald Trump featured candidates ripping into the partys frontrunner for the nomination without
fear of cutting comebacks from the man who occupied center stage for the previous
six debates.
Many in the seven-candidate panel that included New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie
took swipes Thursday night at Trump, who boycotted the event in Des Moines,
Iowa, because of his continuing feud with broadcaster Fox News, including a complaint that moderator Megyn Kelly doesnt treat him fairly.
Some of the hardest hits were delivered by U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
Let me say, Im a maniac, Cruz said in response to Kellys opening question.
And everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly and Ben (Carson), youre a terrible surgeon. Now that weve gotten the Donald Trump portion out of the way...
That scored points, said Aaron Kall, the director of the University of Michigan
debate team.
The elephant missing from the debate, Donald Trump, was the topic of the first
debate question out of the gate from Fox News moderators and Ted Cruz knocked it
out of the park, Kall said. He criticized Trump for his personal insults of other
Republican candidates and attacked him for dissing the voters of Iowa by missing a
major debate just days before voting begins.
