Assignment title

Number Systems

(Assignment 1 of 4)

is to: provide the analytical knowledge and techniques needed to

carry out a range of engineering tasks and will provide a base for further study of
engineering mathematics.
Purpose of this assignment

Scenario :

Now you are working in one of the biggest electrical distributed factory, as a junior
mathematical analyst. If some problem will happen, you have to find out the errors and
solve the problem to reach a normal position. And you have been asked by your line
manager to find the solutions to some of the problems.
LO1: P1.1: Use estimation techniques and error arithmetic to establish realistic results from
experiment
Task 1
(1)

(I)

(a)

(i)

Estimate the value of each of the following:

3.87 14.6
4.73 x 18.4,
(ii)
,
(iii) 12.021 5.917
9.32
Use a calculator to find each of the above problem.

(b)
(c)

Compare the estimate with the exact value of each problem by experimentation.

(II)

The radius of a circle is given as 41 cm, correct to the nearest cm. What are the possible
errors when calculating its area?

LO1: P 1.2: Convert number systems from one base to another, and apply the binary
number system to logic circuits.
Task 2
(i)

Convert the following number systems from one base to another base:

(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)

11010010
6D.7C
63150
97654

(binary number to decimal)

(hex number to binary)
(octal number to binary)
(decimal to hex)

(ii) Devise a logic circuit to meet the requirements of the output given in the following table,
using as few gates as possible.

LO1: P 1.3: Perform arithmetic operations using complex numbers in Cartesian and Polar
form.
Task (3)
(3) (i)

Perform the operation and leave the result in polar form

of the given complex

numbers:
Z
=
9
( Cos 70 + i sin 70 ) and
W =
2

3i

(ii) (a) Express the complex number 1- 3i in the form x + iy; where x and y are real
numbers.
(b) Hence sketch, find the modulus and argument of this complex number.

LO1: P 1.4: Determine the powers and roots of complex numbers using De Moivres
Theorem.
Task (4)
(4) (i) Use De Moivre's Theorem to determine the indicated powers of the complex number:
30

(a) (1 + i) ,

(b) (3 2i)

Express the result in standard form.

For M2
(ii) Use the Complex Root Theorem to determine the indicated roots of the complex
number :
(a) (1 i) 14 ,

(b) (i)

And then represent each of the roots graphically. Express the roots in standard form.

LO1: P 1.5: Apply complex number theory to the solution of engineering problems when
appropriate
Task (5)
(5) (i)

Construct the phasor and impedance diagrams and determine the circuit

constants
for the following voltage and current:
V = 160 sin (5000 t + 45), i = 4 sin (5000t 15)
For M3
(ii)

The series circuit of R = 9 ohms and L = 0.03 henrys has an applied voltage
V = 283 sin (300t + 90). Find the current i .
