1. Introduction
This subject addresses the concepts, skills and knowledge needed in creating and
building new business ventures. The subject is taught from a practitioners perspective.
2. Expected Learning Outcomes
The purpose of the assignment is to find out how well the students are able to
Understand the concepts and context of building new businesses, their
relevance and application to organisations in todays economy.
Understand the formulation and application of new business strategies for
start-ups, new ventures, and achieving innovation in existing established
organisations.
Understand the development of the necessary skills to formulate a strategy for
a new venture.
understand and critically analyze business plans in theory as well as apply
their knowledge in practice in applying in actual business situations
3. Content
Students are required to conduct in depth research and gather sufficient data for
the assignment.
Task:
Choose an existing business in the Maldives. For this business do a gap analysis
relating to a theoretical business plan. In your analysis,
a. identify whether a business plan was compiled or not
b. Find out what are the components that you think should be included in a
business plan and compare this plan with the business that you have chosen to
do the gap analysis.
You may use information gathered from your lectures and from existing
literature, to do this.
c. Discuss the possible ways in which the level of performance may be
attributed to the presence or absence of a business plan in your chosen
business.

The length of the assignment should be between 2500 - 3000 words.

4. Assessment

This assignment will be evaluated on multiple factors, including


a) clear and direct response to the assignment task;
b) Justification of the important factors you have chosen for the business plan
and how well you could present the gap analysis, between the
theoretical plan you have chosen and the actual business plan of the
business.
c) demonstrated ability to apply the course concepts and frameworks in your
analysis;
d) critical evaluation and effective insights into the gap analysis;
e) The level of detail and depth of study
f) Logical sequencing of ideas
g) Effective communication including language and grammar
h) Effective recommendations

6. Policy on Late Assignments


The deadline for the assignment is 2.00 pm on 18th October 2015. It must be
professionally presented (i.e., word processed, stapled, spell-checked, etc) and
submitted in soft and hard-copy form. A soft copy may be emailed to the lecturer.
Except where an extension has been granted on medical or compassionate grounds,
deadlines for all material submitted for assessment must be adhered to strictly. The
penalty for late submission of items for assessments is 5% of the maximum mark
awarded, for each day late.
If for any valid reason a student will not be able to turn assignments in on time s/he
has to make special arrangements with the lecturer. In such cases the lecturer should
be notified of any requests for extensions before and NOT after the due date. No
consideration will be given to requests that come after the due date.

7. Plagiarism
Plagiarism and cheating are serious offences and will be severely dealt with.
Plagiarism involves using the work of another person and presenting it as ones own.
Encouraging or assisting another person to commit plagiarism is a form of improper
collusion and is also unacceptable.
Any of the following acts constitutes plagiarism unless the source of each quotation or
piece of borrowed material is clearly acknowledged:
1. Copying out part(s) of any document or audio-visual material (including
computer based materials);
2. Using or extracting another persons concepts, experimental results, or
conclusions;
3. Summarizing another persons work;
4. In an assignment where there was collaborative preparatory work, submitting
substantially the same final version as another student whether in whole or in
part.
