Our ambition: promote French

engineering expertise
throughout the world
Meeting the challenges of local, and particularly urban planning and
development, and offering solutions on a multiple scale, from infrastructure
to the wider view, and from the local neighbourhood to the metropolitan
area
At the beginning of 2015, we are remaining on a trajectory of growth. We
must pay attention to managing the contracts entrusted to us both
rigorously and responsibly, and in particular the largest among them.
We are breaking new ground in the international reach of both our
activities and our teams. We will put greater emphasis on our multidisciplinary qualities. On our markets, we are capable of working on
different parts of the value chain. This is a crucial asset, because it is at the
interfaces between our specialities that savings can be made, both for us
and for the clients that we support.
Our strategic aims: make progress in the race by relying on our shareholder
model, going where the growth is, increasing our profits significantly and
durably, combining the understanding of the client and technical
knowledge to always deploy the best team on each project entrusted to
us, developing our talents responsibly, and, finally, remaining at the cutting
edge of technical excellence and sustainable engineering.

In 2014, the breakdown of our turnover between France and

International tipped in favour of the latter, as we now generate 53% of
our turnover outside France as against to 49% in 2013.
Consistent with our strategic aim to go where the growth is, these results
are a reflection of the development we have engaged internationally
over the past few years, with most notably a substantial increase in our
target regions: India, the Middle East and Brazil.

In July 2015, Egis and Projacs, the leading project and construction
management firm in the Middle East, sealed a strategic partnership to
develop new opportunities. Founded in 1984, Projacs is strongly
established in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Saudi
Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Kuwait) and
also operates in neighbouring countries. With over USD 2500 billion worth
of projects under planning, bidding or execution across the MENA
region, both Egis and Projacs see significant opportunities for partnership
and have over the past few months began sharing resources and
capabilities as well as developing joint approaches for business
development.
In 2014, Egis furthers its development strategy in Brazil with the opening of
new offices in Salvador and the acquisition of engineering firm Lenc. This
new acquisition allows Egis to become one of the foremost engineering

11 |30

firms in Brazil with its 800 employees, whilst also consolidating its international
business activities in one of the most promising countries in the world.
In the country, Egis plays a part in the delivery of major transport
infrastructure such as the Rio metro and systems engineering for the
Salvador metro. Egis is also supervising the North-South railway link between
Palmas/TO and Porto Seco-Anpolis/GO and is involved in the construction
of the rail bypass in Curitiba. Egis also holds the concession for the
Viracopos airport located 90 km north of So Paulo, where traffic is
booming.
In the Middle East, Egis won the prestigious engineering contracts for the
metros of Doha in Qatar, Riyadh and Medina in Saudi Arabia, as well as the
design and construction supervision contracts for Um Alhoul Economic
Zone, south of Doha. Egis also won the EPCM contract for the rehabilitation
of Al Karaana lagoon, the extension of Doha West wastewater treatment
and recycling plant in Qatar and the upgrading of the airfield facilities at
Riyadh Airport.
In the Persian Gulf, Egis has offices in Doha, Riyadh and Dubai. The year
2014 was marked by the creation of a new company, Egis Emirates to
pursue Egis activities development in the United Arab Emirates in the areas
of energy, (including nuclear), industry and defence. In 2014 Egis Middle
East teams moved into bigger offices whilst staying in the same building in
the heart of the Duba Silicon Oasis.
In 2014, India was still the second largest country in terms of headcount,
with 1,500 employees. The group continues to actively pursue its
development in the country.
Egis objective for 2015 is to advance among the leading international
engineering groups through rapid growth. Internationally the Group has a
long-standing tradition of contributing to the attractiveness and
accessibility of regions through the design and construction of road and rail
infrastructure. Today, the Group also contributes to the growth of facilities in
rail, air travel and water as well as in buildings and urban development.

In France, an engineering leader

Although its international business is increasing, Egis remains firmly-rooted in
its domestic market.
Its many local offices allow the group to remain close and attentive to the
needs of its clients and develop partnerships specially designed to address
local challenges.
In 2014, Egis continued its external growth policy by acquiring the company
eMash which specialises in the development, installation and maintenance
of software for Infrastructure Asset Management. With this acquisition, the
Group reasserts its standing in this strategic area.
Recently, EasyTrip France, the Egis subsidiary specialising in services to road
mobility, acquired the Kiwhi Pass solution which gives electric vehicles
access to charging stations using an interoperability-based solution.

OUR WORLDWIDE FOOTPRINT

Present in over 100 countries across the world, Egis has a global footprint
and acts on a local level.

www.egis-group.com/activities/our-presence

All of our skills are put to use today in nearly every corner of the world.
Our international activities are conducted both by our country
subsidiaries, general engineering subsidiaries based in Europe (Spain,
Romania, Poland, Serbia, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine), Africa and the Indian
Ocean (Algeria, Cameroon, Madagascar), the Middle East (Qatar, United
Arab Emirates), Asia (China, Myanmar, Mongolia, Indonesia, Singapore),
India, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico and also by our project groups, set up
by our specialist companies or our operating companies.

Our view of the long term

Engineering and operating for a sustainable world
Through the combination of its business lines, Egis supports its clients from
project inception right through to post-delivery. This unique stance enables
Egis to leverage and promote the experience acquired over the entire life
cycle of structures and gain comprehensive understanding of the
challenges in terms of environmental control, economic
expediency and social equilibrium.

Creating and operating for the long

term
As an engineer, consultancy, architect and landscaper, our sustainable
added value comes from our ability to:
Create conditions conducive to integrating responsible performance
targets into the project
Offer solutions to improve the ratio between costs of the project,
whether direct or indirect, and the benefits for the region and the
stakeholders: more benefits for the same resources and impacts, or
fewer resources for the same benefits and impacts
communicate on the subject, and obtain recognition from third parties,
in particular from users
As the operator of infrastructure, we strive to:
implement a responsible company policy, in connection with our
specifications as operator;
work in cooperation with local communities;

produce feedback to stakeholders.

21 |30

Giving substance to our clients commitments

Whatever the area, we generally observe three main types of situation
according to the regions environment and the level of engagement of
their actors. Below are several significant achievements from 2014 in these
different categories.

Disruptive scenarios
For industrial companies, developers and investors who can rely on the
strong support of stakeholders and are interested in systemic approaches,
we help to deliver radical transformation of business models and ways of
working.
For example, in the preliminary design of the New Town of El Mna, in
Algeria. In 2020, this town will be home to some 50,000 inhabitants in a
modern urban setting, respectful of its environment, the foundation of
sustainable agriculture and a controlled tourist industry. In an arid
environment, Egis produced the masterplan of a mobile, fertile and
dynamic city. It is articulated around a green structure, the
emanation of our concept of soft infrastructure.

Transitional scenarios
For organisations which wish to excel or stand out on one or two specific
and distinguishing subjects, which in turn can help a wider range of
functions to progress together, we improve the environment and the
processes with close attention paid to efficiency and acceptability.

For example, in the project of an eco-district in Rouen, Egis is tasked

with the urban and landscaping engineering and construction
management of the eco-district. The project aims to regenerate 90
hectares at the heart of the city. Starting from a green and blue
framework, it will play an essential role in mobility and ultimately will be
home to 10,000 people. The design anticipated the consequences of
global warming, in the form of heat islands and the water level.

Egis has also developed Social Imprint: this stakeholder-facing

approach allows the measurement in real time of the state of social
consensus around a major project, detecting the situations that
present a social risk, identifying the impacts on the community and the
ways they can be mitigated. An integrated reporting tool allows the
monitoring of essential data.

Challenges met
To deal with concerns around the delivery of a concept or a facility in
critical conditions (timeframe, governance, technical complexity, lack of
understanding, etc.) we assemble the appropriate expertise and set up the
necessary governance.
22 |30

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egis thus carried out a two-year

facilitation assignment between stakeholders of forestry resources. The
assignment resulted in the conclusion of social clauses in concession
contracts covering 12 million of hectares of forests between forestry
companies and communities, in a co-development perspective.

Corporate Social Responsibility

(CSR) Report
Since 2012, we have published our CSR reports in the
interests of information and transparency. It gives
updates on all of the actions for progress
implemented regarding both sustainability issues
related to our projects and activities, and our own
internal challenges. It communicates on our progress
on the principles of the UN Global Compact which
we joined in 2011. Latest release in 2014.

With Egis, projects obtain recognition

Every year, our entities and the projects we deliver for our clients receive
several prizes and awards related to responsibility and sustainable
development.
Highlights for 2014 include:

The Entreprises & Environnement Award: the special Biodiversit et

Entreprises award for the innovative solution Bat3Data developed
by Egis to provide three-dimensional tracking of the movements of
bats.

The Unsfa Citizens Agenda award for the Beausjour project on

Reunion Island. Egis is a member of the EPCM team.

A special distinction from the regional engineering days (rencontres

rgionales de lingnierie) for Clipn Clim Panel: a plug & play active
faade concept for energy renovation on buildings, developed by
Elioth, an Egis entity specialising in innovative shell structures and in
environmental design.

Cube 2020: the Silver cube for Egis building Terra Nova III in Montreuil
which generated energy savings of 16% in 2014 (category certified
tertiary buildings over 10,000 sqm).

There is of course no such thing as a small project. Each one is the

opportunity to develop local skills, a common culture and a more
harmonious community life, and to test ideas which can be rolled out in the
following project.

23 |30

www.egis-group.com/action/future

Cutting-edge innovation

Energy efficiency: in all of its projects, Egis adopts a design

approach that favours low energy consumption projects.

Pooling of traction power in light rail and metro, enabling the

energy generated from vehicle braking to be recovered and
fed back into the network.
A patented innovation, 2x25 kV++, for single phase 25KV rail
traction power supply.
An energy network simulation tool, SIMALIM, developed by Egis to
operate trains smoothly, pragmatically and economically,
without considerably lengthening journey times.

Participative study into living conditions: an approach to gain

better insight into issues faced by a region so as to improve the
acceptability of a project by the local population. The study
collects, charts and analyses the collective and subjective
responses from residents of a given zone and takes this data into
consideration during the design of a project.

Aulnes: development of a tool and an operational method to

represent the spatial impact of benefits delivered by ecosystems
and assessment of the loss engendered (economic value) by a
project:
Mapping of the service offer in a given area,
Estimation of the loss of ecosystem services arising from different
alternatives and options for the route alignment of transport
infrastructure or for a development;
Integration of the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services
into the social and economic impact assessments, with the aim
of helping public policy makers with their choices in the field of
land planning and development.

Shared smart streets: a design approach which consists of adapting

the street to lifestyle changes, putting an end to a process which is
making public space continually obsolete through its inability to
move with the times. Based on the dynamic allocation of the street
space, the smart street solution is particularly well-suited to severely
restricted areas with intensive and mutually incompatible uses. The
smart street solution helps to realign the streets traffic uses and
capacities, facilitating social cohesion within the community.

24 |30

Clipn Clim: a plug & play active faade solution for the
renovation of buildings, applied solely on the outside using a factory
pre-assembled multi-function active wall panel. The energy-saving
renovation takes place exclusively on the buildings outer wall. The
concept thus provides a response to several requirements: low
carbon renovation, heat and energy efficiency, comfortable
conditions and air quality, cost efficiency, fast installation, occupied
premises and/or phased renovation works. The Clipn Clim module
guarantees the quality of air and interior comfort using a dual flow
ventilation system, radiant heating panels and the renewal of air
during the summer using a dedicated air inlet.

Wind It: the Wind-it technological innovation consists of fitting one or

several wind turbines into a metallic mast specially designed to
accommodate wind turbines. The Wind-it range currently offers
telecommunications masts for sites with insufficient or no network
coverage, ranging from 35 to 80 metres in height. The solution also
includes a photovoltaic installation designed to suit the location.
Wind-it substantially reduces and can even eradicate the need for
the traditional and costly solution of hydrocarbon-fuelled power
generators. The Wind-it solution can furthermore be sized so as to
produce surplus power and therefore contribute to the local grid.

Research at the heart of our projects

Canope: a research project of the French Research agency ANR

whose objective is to design processes and tools to optimise the
programming, design, construction and operation of infrastructure
coverings in an urban environment. Within this project, Egis is
specifically in charge of coordinating the proposals for technical
innovation for the design and production of these covers, describing
the state of the art and coordinating a feedback programme from
the Paris Rive Gauche project.

e-portfolio: an innovative project to design and develop a web

service using an interactive energy transition monitoring tool. A
property portfolio observatory is the first stage of the approach,
describing the energy-related and real-estate key challenges. It will
help to support real estate developers in managing their overall
energy transition programme, where management actions and
audit reports feed into the action plan in real time. The tool will finally
allow for plan monitoring (timeframes, costs, etc) and will provide
automatic feedback on actions undertaken.
25 |30

Blue blocs: in partnership with a Dutch company, Egis is developing a

concept of dike blocks displaying high ecological potential through
their proactive approach to biodiversity. This research especially
appeals to developers who are keen to reduce the environmental
impact of their constructions.

Micro-habitats: innovative solutions of micro-habitats for fish to

restore sea bed biodiversity. The reed and sea urchin modules,
designed by the Egis subsidiary Seaboost, act as habitats for fry to
help them survive in sea ports. This innovation, developed as part of
the applied research programme GIREL, is being tested in the
Marseille deep sea port.

C2ROP Chutes de blocs, Risques Rocheux et Ouvrages de

Protection (Rock fall, rock hazards and protective structures):
Awarded a National Interest Project label by the French Civil and
Urban Engineering Network RGC&U, the project proposes the
establishment of a collaborative research structure bringing together
project owners, infrastructure operators and safety managers along
with a platform of integrated operational resources to deal with rock
hazards
(rockslides,
landslides,
falling
blocks,
etc.).
C2ROPs aims are to build a chain of coordinated tools (hazard risk
prevention), produce a set of risk management guidelines, build a
structured asset from the results recorded by digital tools and
experimental equipment, and obtain international recognition of
French know-how. Egis is a partner and coordinator of this research
project.

BIM
Egis has adopted BIM as a production standard for the delivery of every
project entrusted to the group. As a pioneer in research, training and
promotion of BIM to its partners, the group today develops digital modelling
applications for use from upstream phase right through to the maintenance
and operation of structures.
Through its active participation in research networks and programmes
(Mediaconstruct, Building Smart, MINnD), the group plays its part in helping
to structure the exchange of information, define a standardised data
model, develop new tools and define the specifications for collaborative
platforms for use by all actors in the construction industry.
