Integra Gold Rush Challenge

Integra Gold (www.integragold.com) is excited to host the

Integra Gold Rush Challenge, one of the largest ever mining
industry incentive prize competitions. We are seeking your
help to hunt down the next big gold discovery on our
property located in Val-d'Or, Canada - which literally
translates to the "valley of gold".
Val-dOr, located on the eastern tip of the prolific Abitibi
Gold Belt, has been on the map since 1923 when gold was
first discovered in the area. The surrounding belt
has produced more than 135 million ounces of the mineral.

Adjacent to the town of Val-d'Or is the Lamaque Mine.

Opened in 1935, it remained in operation for 50 years,
processing more than 24 million tons of ore and 4.5 million
ounces of gold.
But in 1985, faced with labour unrest and a low international
gold standard, the owners decided to cut their losses and
closed production at their Lamaque Mine, leaving it to
collect dust and fade into history as one of the longest
operating and highest producing mines in the Abitibi Gold
Belt.
Enter: Integra Gold.
The Lamaque mine remained untouched and relatively
forgotten for nearly 30 years, until Integra purchased the
original land, permits and infrastructure of the old Lamaque
and Sigma mines out of bankruptcy in October, 2014.
While the initial aim of this acquisition was the milling
facility at surface, the truly important part of the purchase
turned out to be... data. Lots of it. Over 6 terabytes of data
was discovered, spanning 75 years of mining data from the
historic Sigma and Lamaque mines.
We believe the production closure of the Lamaque Mine in
1985 had nothing to do with dwindling deposits. The

Lamaque main plug had only been mined to a vertical depth

of 1,100 meters, while its immediate neighbour the Sigma
Mine was mined down to a depth of 1,830 meters, and there
were indications that the Lamaque mine still offered
significant untapped resources.
Somewhere within the 2.7-million-year-old geology of the
Canadian Shield, there was a treasure waiting to be found.
However, at over 6 terabytes, the sheer volume of data we
now have on these mines would take Integra years to
analyze on our own. We need a faster and more costeffective method to analyze and interpret the data to identify
additional gold targets.

Welcome to the Integra Gold Rush Challenge,

an incentive prize to point us towards the next big gold
deposit on our Sigma-Lamaque property. We want to unlock
the value of this database by harnessing the collective
brainpower of thousands of individuals around the world.
We will be turning over our database to the public to help
direct us towards this next discovery. The challenge is open
to anyone, from any background. Integra will be offering
prizes totalling CAD $1 million for the most innovative and
comprehensive solutions.

Guidelines
Prizes
Subject to the terms outlined in these rules, semi-finalists
and finalists, as determined by the judges, will be eligible to
win cash prizes based on how they are ranked by the judges.
All awards will be paid at the conclusion of the Challenge.
The odds of winning depend upon the number and calibre of
eligible entries received during the Challenge Period.
The Prizes must be accepted as awarded and cannot be
transferred, assigned, sold, substituted or redeemed for cash,
except that the Integra Gold Corporation (Integra), in their
sole discretion, reserve the right to substitute a prize of equal
or greater value if the Prize (as defined herein) cannot be
awarded as described due to unavailability for any reason. In
the event that the Prize consists of or includes attendance at
an event that is cancelled, delayed or rescheduled for any
reason whatsoever, a substitute prize or cash equivalent will
not be provided.
The Semi-finalists and finalists may claim their Prize from
Integra after they have been successfully contacted and
notified of the Prize, has complied with the Challenge Rules

and executed and returned any waivers, releases and/or

documents that may be requested by the Integra. A
maximum of three attempts will be made to contact each
finalist. If a finalist is unreachable during the period of 72
hours, an alternate finalist may be selected.

Proposal and Data Requirements

The merit of your work will be assessed based purely on the
proposal package that you submit. Therefore, the proposal
should be thorough, specific, clear, and easy to read. While
you will not be able to include the entirety of your work in
your proposal, this section contains guidelines for elements
that are expected to be addressed in a complete proposal
identifying potential high-grade targets

Background or introduction
Be sure to demonstrate in your introduction your thorough
understanding of the project background, constraints, and
short- and long-term goals. Describe any requirements for
the project you may have derived.
Approach
Include descriptions of processes, tools, and techniques
utilized in your project. Be sure to go into sufficient detail,
especially in areas there your approach may deviate from
conventional or traditional methods.
Description of the mine and regional geology
Describe your hypotheses regarding the geology of the
Sigma and Lamaque mines in the Val-d'Or region. Provide
insights into geological criteria used for exploration
targeting and the relationship to existing and proposed sites
of gold mineralisation. Include descriptions and comments
on the role of the host rock, relationship to structure, the
timing and number of mineralising events, and any other
relevant factors controlling the precipitation and localisation
of gold from the mineralising fluids. Describe your approach
and predictive models used to reach your insights. For
submissions or conclusions using non-traditional, non-

geological methodology, a geological description may be

replaced with a non-geoscientific working hypothesis.
Targets
Propose targets for exploration and exploitation in the Sigma
and Lamaque properties. Be as specific and possible and
offer sufficient support and reasoning for your
recommendations.
Path forward
Describe your recommendations for a path forward for
advancing exploration at the Sigma-Lamaque property.
Include a prioritization of activities and events. Keep in
mind the cost-effectiveness of your proposal (budgets and
estimates are not required).
In this or a separate conclusions section, be sure to show a
clear connection between your presented work and the toplevel goal of the Gold Rush challenge to have an
exploration target with the highest potential for a large gold
discovery.
Additional sections

In addition, for clarity and completeness, please include an

executive summary (one page maximum), a table of
contents, and a list of cited references.
Proposal Submission Format
Proposals are limited to 30 pages maximum, including the
title page, table of contents, appendixes, etc. Paper size must
be 8.5 by 11 inches, with the exception of up to one 11 by
17 foldout. Minimum margins are one inch. Font must be
minimum 12 pt, double-spaced (text in tables and figures
may be as small as 9 pt). No logos, names, or other markings
that could be used to identify the proposing team or any
team members are allowed anywhere in the proposal (your
proposal will be assigned a number upon upload to facilitate
blind judging).

Proposals must be uploaded as a single unlocked PDF

document, 20 MB maximum. Embedded hyperlinks to
external content, such as videos or animations (maximum
two minutes duration recommended) or anything else that
might help the judging panel come to a decision on a
winning idea or concept, are allowed. However, there is no
guarantee that judges will view external content, so the
proposal document itself must stand on its own.

Basis for Judging

Based on the entirety of all proposals received, the top 20
submissions will be selected as Semi-Finalists. The top 20
submissions will be will be selected based on the criterion
listed below.
The individuals or teams with the five highest rankings will
be selected as Finalists and be invited to the 2016 PDAC
Conference in Toronto to make a presentation to a judging
panel. The panel will evaluate the submissions and
presentation (based on the same criterion listed below) of the
5 Finalists and select a single Grand Prize winner.
The judges decisions are final and binding. Integra reserve
the right at any time, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any

Know a Mining/Geology Subject Matter Expert?

Aug. 6, 2015, 9:51 a.m. PDT by Nancy Graziano
With innovators from over 32 different countries having
already pre-registered, the Integra Gold Rush Challenge is
shaping up to be an exciting competition!
As we move closer to our launch date, we would like to
speak with Mining Industry and/or Geology Subject Matter
Experts (SMEs) to solicit their input so we can fine-tune the
challenge guidelines and other aspects of the challenge. If
you or someone you know is interested, please send an email
to liz@herox.com.

Hi,
Got couple of questions :
Q1. Is the Blue boundary (as shown in the image attached
below) Val-d Or is the Tenement boundary ?
2. Where can we get the Geochemical data pertaining to this
Tenement boundary. We have gone thru earlier comments
on this question and the suggested answers of going thru the
SIGEOM website and we have found that on SIGEOM we
can view the geochem BUT we need to download all data
for the said tenement to map with rest of the info. Pls help.

What do the naming conventions of the new geophysical
datasets mean? For example, "_GRD_s_GRD_s"? I assume
it's related to the processing, but could we get more
information on that? thank you!

If there has been surface geochemistry sampling, can that
data be released. Additionally, any other downhole element
sampling (right now only Au is provided). One last question
is why is there a hole of information in the magnetics?

Hello Lyon,
Please check today's update for some additional data. As
this is a historic database, only Au was sampled for at
the time.

What are the facts you need to offer the team Gold Rush geology, geochemistry, philosophy, paranormal, pictures
from space? Or -prognoz, estimated reserves? Within the
area located in Val-d'Or or frame? Opening or blind? Old or
new formation? Mine will be considered as 5 tons or more?
Thanks.

Following Val's comment below, im wondering if there are
any other airborne geophysical datasets for the property (i.e.
EM). If so, can the raw data of those be released? Also
curious about any ground geophysical datasets - there was a
mention how resistivity and ip "doesnt work". Im assuming
to know that a survey or two would have been completed.
Can those be released as well?

We downloaded the datataset and they don't add up to 6TB.
The total we have is 18.5GB unzipped and 10.6GB zipped.
For example, the folders \\Images_Used\PLANVIEW\ and
\\Images_Used\V_SECT\ are both completely empty. Is that
right? (also tried downloading from a different portal and got
the same results). Thank you.

I didn't see the magnetic database in the "raw data" (only

wasn't given? Having the raw processed database would help

with the interp. Did someone already ask this?

Daniel Hatton Sept. 27, 2015, 4:15 p.m. PDT

In your email from HeroX you should have received a
link.
Step 3.Access the data required for the challenge.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has partnered with
Integra Gold Corp as the official Data Hosting Partner.
Go to the link
http://goldrushdata.integragold.com.s3.amazonaws.com/
index.html to view the online portal to download the
data. We recommend to first download the Read-Me
file outlining the different folders of the database.

You may choose to download all or any portion of the

raw data. If you are choosing to use the Leapfrog
GoldRush software, the raw data has been packaged as a
Leapfrog project file to simplify the upload process. You
may choose to download these files now or at any point.
Refer to the Read-Me file to help you understand the
structure of the database. The geologists, engineers, and
technicians at InnovExplo Inc. in Val-dOr, Canada,
spent months constructing this digital database built
from over 6 terabytes of data, spanning 75 years of
mining and exploration data. For questions pertaining to
specific database details, please email

I am unclear about the area for the contest. Is it just the 2 sq

which does not really have any data available for it in the

In the read.me file I find that Assays.txt contains information
concerning gold analyses: Hole ID, footage of sampled

interval (from-to), result of analyse for gold (average in g/t

Au). Our method of prediction of gold mineralization is
based on processing of geochemical data of several (up to 20

about other elements (Ag, As, Hg, Cu, Sb etc)?

How will we be getting that 6TB of data? Download it over
the internet? Our benevolent Canadian ISPs give us 200 GB

per month and an average speed of 2.25GB per hour (5

Mbps)...are there other options?
Reply message

The Gold Rush Team Sept. 2, 2015, 9:31 a.m. PDT

Hi Bruno,
Thanks for your question. We will not be supplying 6TB
of data, instead we will be providing a link to a database
built FROM 6TB of data. When we first walked in to the
Sigma Lamaque offices, we discovered a vault of data.
This vault included hard drives with over 6TB of data,
as well as incredible archives of paper data. Much of the
6TB were scanned plans, sections, and drill logs. For
months we have had a team of professionals digitizing
all of this data. What we distribute to competitors will be
within Canadian ISP standards. This will all be laid out
in the coming week, stay tuned - and thanks for a great
question.

A few teams were created through a bug (that has been
fixed) near the start of the pre-registration period. If you
would like to create a team, this will now be possible
after the Challenge officially launches here on HeroX.
You will find the button on the righthand side of the

and a recurring question is "do you have anything to get us

produced, associated minerals, deposit types/characteristics
in the Val D'or area.

The Gold to search for did not try, but I have technologies,
which will help from found mineral any quality to get that
you want.
We shall Begin with this:
1. The Source raw material (the crowbar or low-grade gold)
fits in tsarist vodka (2/3 HNO3 + 1/3 HCl). Preliminary
pulverizing not without fall.
2. The Received solution is filtered (advisable).
3. The Solution unlike method of freezing is extinguished by
alkali (for instance NaOH) or her solution. The Liquid
meets.
4. Received red powder is washed first by nitric acid
(HNO3), afterwards water and leaves on smelting.

Yes, is it possible to get a complete, maybe not detailed,
specification of how the data is represented, for example is it
2D or 3D, in which format is it expressed, the file or file
types, and is it possible to get a small multi-megabyte
example data set that we can star monkeying around with so
we can see what we are dealing with as soon as possible. I'm
thinking of using a novel machine learning approach that
really does depend on knowing the data format so I know
what to expect one the competion goes live. Thanks in
advance.

Hi Woody, currently we are working on producing a
"FAQ" that is specific to the data, and will be published
online to address the many questions we are receiving
about the data. Work is currently being done in
constructing the database, digitizing 3D models from
historic 2D plans, georeferencing, validating, etc. The
data will be a mixture of types, as is typical of mining
data-bases. Currently there are raster images, vector files
(2d and 3d DXF format), CSV files, spreadsheets in
excel or text, etc. Please follow the updates to this page
and watch for the "FAQ" to be published. We are also
exploring the idea of a sample dataset, stay tuned for
information on that.
All the best! -The Gold Rush Team

6 terabytes sounds like alot. But how much of that is simply
hi-res scans of plans, maps and sections? Given the era of
the data, I doubt much of it is in formats directly importable
into standardized productivity software..spreadsheets, GIS,
GEMCOM, etc. That would be a huge effort on Integra's
part. Or is OCR being applied in some cases? And once the
data is in workable formats, that's 90% of the effort. You
might as well do the evaluation yourself.
It doesn't really matter at the end of the day. I'm already
thinking of how much of my prospecting the million dollars
is going to cover! Bring it on!
Reply message

The Gold Rush Team July 6, 2015, 11:15 a.m. PDT

Indeed, a lot of the 6 TB of data consists of scanned

image files. However, there are many other data and file
types in the 6 TB database. The data currently consists
of raster images, vector files (2D and 3D DXF files),
flat-files, CSV files, excel spreadsheets and formatted
database files, , etc. All of these file types can be easily
imported into many different software platforms used
for analysis. We are in the process of digitizing,
validating and geo-referencing a lot of this data and we
expect that the database will be ready for distribution in
September.

Is September the date the data capture is targeted for
completion or is the data capture already complete? And is
there a validation process for the database before it is
released? I assume the dominant data is from scanned paper
sources (hence the large database size?). And is
georeferencing of the the data being completed prior to the
release of the data or is that part of the challenge - to put it in
the right location in 3D space?

Hi Michael, thanks for your question and interest!
The data capture is in the process of being completed,
and will be made available in September. Currently
there are many sources of data being compiled and
digitized (yes, including many scanned sections, etc).
Both validation and georeferencing is being performed
in this process. We have had many questions regarding
the data, and will at some point over the coming months
provide some colour on the details of what it contains.
