The Indian animation

industry is now gearing up
to flag its own unique spot
on the global animation
map. For this there is an
ever-increasing demand for
trained human resources as
animators, content creators
and mentors.

Since its inception, the Animation Film Design

programme at NID, has ventured to meet this demand
by enabling its students with skills and tools to solve
complex problems in various fields of communication
design using animation as a creative medium.

Initially in the first semester,

students are introduced to basic
design skills and topics to gain
a broader understanding of
design education before they
are introduced to the world of
animation design in its social
and cultural context.
In the later semesters, students
are exposed to a workshopand-project mode of learning
where they experiment with
various media like 2-D, 3-D, clay,
mixed media, pixilation, graphic
narratives, to name a few.
Armed with a transdisciplinary
approach, the NID Film Club,
action analysis, field visits
and other interactive sessions
further enrich the students
experiential learning.

With such diverse inputs

of a dynamic curriculum,
students projects
eventually result in unique
and original products, many
of which win awards and
accolade at a national and
international level.

The progamme further enriches the

students experiential learning through
Chitrakatha a biennial student
international animation festival where many
national and international experts of the
animation world come to interact and share
their expertise with the students.

Graduates of this programme

find rewarding careers
as animators, character
designers, story-board artists
as well as creative directors,
producers, consultants and
animation designers in many
organisations such as Channel
[V], MTV, Nickelodeon,
Cartoon Network, Tata
Interactive, Infosys, Cognizant
to name a few, and also as
individual designpreneurs or
as faculty at various design
schools in India and abroad.

This film is an attempt to create awareness about the rich craft heritage of
India in the impressionable minds of young adolescent children. This film
highlights in particular the traditional Rabari embroidery of the region of
Kachchh, Gujarat.
This educative, entertaining and interactive picture book tells the story of
a young Rabari girl, Lacchu, who introduces a new motif into her regular,
embroidery patterns. The odd design sticks out like a sore thumb and questions
are raised. This leads the girl to embark on a journey of discovery a discovery
of her heritage, ancestry and eventually her own identity.

The objective of this project was to produce a comic book based on the life of
the renowned Indian polymath Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose and short animated
ads for promoting the book which was to be designed keeping in mind its
future potential as a textbook for school children.
Bose made a number of pioneering discoveries in plant physiology, in particular,
measuring plant response to various stimuli thereby scientifically proving that
plants can feel too. The story in the book starts with an allusion to Boses
inspiration for his work: one fine morning, a nine-year old Jagadish discovers
that the Mimosa plant (aka the touch-me-not plant) in his room can talk.
Gradually, the plant becomes a trusted companion on his journey of discovery.

trying to find their own means of self-expression. It inspires the youth about
how they can channel passion into an instrument of leadership, whilst criticising
the laid-back attitude of the larger percentage of the masses in the face of a

This film tries to create awareness about sensitive issues of sex education or
rather the lack thereof, in a conservative society like Indias. It attempts to
highlight the existing dysfunctional education system which fails to impart sex
education and create sexual awareness amongst the growing teenagers. It also
comments on the negligence on the part of parents who consider talking about
sex a taboo.
A young boy is confused about the pubertal changes happening in his body
and his new-found sexual urges. His inquiries are rebuffed and rebuked. So he
becomes fixated on the idea of finding the answers himself. Playing hooky from
school, he goes to the local cinema hall catch the morning show of an erotic film.

The protagonist of this film, a young man of twenty-three years, is playing

struggles with it a little bit and gets all worked up and kills it in a fit of rage.
The point of this film was not to state the reason why he killed the insect, but
to probe deeper into the state of mind of the protagonist whilst he was killing
the insect. The film provokes the audience to reflect and reason out what
it is that burgeons from within and takes hold of the conscious self to drive
humans to act the way they do out of sheer anger.

The mainstream animation film today largely targets children and young
adults. Few films celebrate old age or throw light on the physiological and
psychological state that is old age. This film tires to provoke the audience
into reflecting that the arrogance of youth will at some point wane as old age
sets in, so why not turn an attentive ear and eye towards preparing for the
inevitable already now?
The film brings to light a regular case scenario of an old couple who are several
years into their retired life. While the wife is coping with old age in style, the
old man cannot deal with his boredom and tries to bring a little adventure in
his life with a beanbag!

Helpless, desperate and frustrated, these farmers often commit suicide.
Made using the traditional cell animation method, this film is about two
parallel worlds and shows how one eats up the other through a metaphorical
yet all too real example of parasitism. A farmer looks on in disbelief as his
beautiful and content little world is deformed and destroyed in front of his

gravity of the issue of farmer suicides.

Panchatantra. The teenage youth in the West was the chosen target audience.
This episode tells the story of a monkey who ends up being injured after fooling

one too sends a moral message: do not interfere in someone elses business.
Traditional and classical animation was used for this particular episode to
reflect the essence of this ancient classic.

are blessed with the presence of grandparents. This story is about a family,
facetious about tradition and culture, which has allowed the monotonous
