1 Introduction
1.1 Background
1.2 Site Description
The following site has been visited where the proposed Solar PV System will be
installed:

2 General Design
The Solar PV System will provide electricity to the Health Club during load shedding

hours with Figure 1 showing the design of the proposed Solar PV System. Electricity to
the Health Club shall be provided either from the grid or by the battery bank, which

will be charged through the PV generator, thus working essentially as a solar powered
UPS.

Figure 1: Possible Solar PV System Design

3 Load profile
The Health Club has different electrical appliances and 2 kW constant load has been
requested by the owner of the premises.

4 System Design
Load profile described above was input to the solar simulation software PV Sol*

5.5 expert. Since the solar system will be designed as a UPS, thus the system has been
designed as an off grid application.

The model system is only example for possible system design and should not be
considered as a final system recommendation. Prior to implementation of the project,

detailed planning and designing will be required by the contractor. The model systems

assumed for this study are poly-crystalline PV modules Yingli Solar YL240 P and 12 V

165 Ah Sonnenschein Model Dryfit Solar Block SB 12/185 AS batteries are selected to
provide electricity for load during the load shedding hours on daily basis.

The Yingli modules represent the middle class standard for cost-efficient yet quality
modules and are widely used for typical PV installations. The modules are rated at 240

Wp, are TV certified according to IEC-standards and are delivered with a positive

power tolerance of -0 W to +5 W. Power output warranty based on Nominal Power is 5

years at 95%, 12 years at 90%, 18 years at 85% and 80% for 25 years. The complete
datasheet can be found in the annex to this study.

The following assumptions were made for the yield calculation:

0 % row-to-row shading loses assumed

Losses due to deviation from the standard solar spectrum 1 %
Losses in diodes 0.5 %
Losses due to mismatch or deviation of power rating from the manufacturers
info 2%
Losses in AC cabling were not considered
Power degradation of PV modules 0.5 % of the original value per year
One day of autonomy has been taken while a battery lower threshold of 30%
has been selected
Simulation report for a 2 kW load scenario is provided as Annexure 1.

5 Cost Assessment
Preliminary cost analysis has been conducted to assess the potential Capital and
Operating Costs for the designed solar PV system for 25 years and 10 years basis. The
results of this analysis are provided in Table 1 below. It should be mentioned that these
cost estimates are based on installation of the specific equipment mentioned earlier.
Costs can vary considerably if different equipment is selected.
