You are on page 1of 4

First of all,

study in quantity( in terms of hours) does not matter...

Study should be in quality...
Know your strength and weakness and plan your study according it..
Daily 4-10 hours reading cant make you knowledgeable...
Daily 2-5 hours of SMART STUDY can make huge different..
According your question I can say that you should work on foundation.. As your f
oundation strong you will not face any difficulty for any new subject..

Study with a purpose
Can you teach this back to your classmates?
Can you teach this back to a patient with no medical background?
How would you use this knowledge in a clinically relevant way?
Form a study group
Set out a schedule and take turns teaching one another and going over lectures
Take scheduled breaks (e.g. 10 minutes every hour)
Break up your day
Do something completely unrelated to school (e.g. exercise, music, etc.) to brea
k up your day and keep your mind refreshed. Going to the gym after class is a re
ally popular way to get a fresh start on the evening studies.
Integrate your knowledge
As a personal and group exercise, constantly try and point out ways how the curr
ent material relates to previous things you have learned. The more degrees of se
paration you can get to, the better. (e.g. hypomagnesemia --> torsades --> ident
ify EKG --> what organ affected --> ventricles of heart --> what artery supplies
them --> LAD --> what artery does that come from --> left coronary --> when is
the left coronary have maximal blood flow --> diastole --> what drug can restric
t coronary blood flow --> cocaine --> what are the overdose symptoms of cocaine
--> ad infinitum...)
To be clear, 12 hours a day is not that much
Conscious hours per day = 17 hours
Conscious hours per week = 119
12 hours/day learning in and out of class = 84
Time leftover = 35 hours per week
I can't say I really knew that many people in college or medical school (not cou
nting MS4s) that had 35 hours per week to kill on errands and extracurriculars.

How to Study Effectively

8 Concentration Strategies:

Eat Frequent Small Meals

Avoid eating a big meal before a study session. Too much food will send your bod
y into a rest mode. On the other hand, don t starve yourself either. Frequent small
meals are best.
Study When You re Sharpest

Study according to your body-clock. Are you sharpest in the morning or at the ev
ening? Schedule your most difficult materials when you are mentally at your best
, and schedule the easier ones when you are mentally less efficient.
Drink Water Often
Drink plenty of water during a study session, especially when you feel sluggish.
Caffeine may help you to stay awake, but it can increase your anxiety
use it in
moderation.
Don t Get Too Comfortable in Your Chair
Choose a chair that supports your back. It should be comfortable, but not too co
mfortable. Just like an athlete during a performance, your body should be relaxe
d, so that all your energy goes to where it matters
your brain.
Clear Your Desk of Everything You Don t Need
Have everything you need on the desk. Put away what you do not need for the stud
y session. Seeing reminders of other assessments or domestic bills may increase
your anxiety and distract you.
Take Breaks Every Hour
It is important to take a break before you feel tired and lose your concentratio
n completely. Regular breaks at least once an hour helps to sustain your concent
ration. If the work is not going too well and you have difficulties in concentra
ting, you may need a long break and go back to it later
Stretch During Your Breaks
Know and respect your concentration span which will vary from hour to hour and f
rom day to day. When you sit for long periods, gravity draws the blood to the lo
wer part of your body. When you take a break, take a few deep breaths and get mo
re oxygen to your brain: try walking around and doing some light stretching for
a few minutes. It will help to release tension in your body, and help your circu
lation.
Study at the Same Time, Same Place
Study at the same time and at the same place, devoted to study only. This helps
you to associate the time and place with studying and concentrating. You will fi
nd that you get into a habit of studying as soon as you sit down.
Good Luck :)
***************************************************************
I learned at a study skills course in high school. to
1. take 10 minute break every hour.
2. take notes - active studying. highlighting, summarizing and re-summarizing un
til you have that which is important.
3. Set goals for your studying. E.g. I should finish X chapters in Y hours.
from my own experience
4. if you get stuck, don't be afraid to ask a friend and/or the smartest person
you know in the class.
5. If you don't understand something - try different textbooks. One may click be
tter with you than another
****************************************************************
To study better, study better. Don't simply study longer. Read something, then d
escribe it in different words to yourself. Teach it to your teddy bear. Draw the
pathway out on paper. Generate 3 novel questions you have about the material th

en seek out answers to them online. When you create your own questions, you know
you've hit a level of understanding that will stick with you for test day. None
of this is easy, but it's very effective. Focussed studying is draining, and yo
u won't be able to do it much more than 4-5hrs/day indefinitely.
Regarding time, I think consistency is the most important factor. Say you want t
o study 4 hours a day. Get a timer, and stop it for any moment when your mind is
n't focussed on material. This will improve discipline and reveal to you how eas
ily your attention can be distracted.
And by the way, medicine is one of the most repetitive fields. As the saying goe
s 'see one, do one, teach one'. You will figuratively 'see 100' before you do on
e. I didn't know that during my pre-clinical years and was totally overwhelmed.
Try not to feel that way, and rather enjoy the material moving at a your own com
fortable pace.

More importantly, why do you wanna study for 12 hours?
IAS? See, if someone told you that the number of hours one sits with a book in f
ront of his face is directly proportional to one's chance of clearing the IAS th
en let me make it very clear to you, it was the biggest lie you ever heard.
Ask any of the successful candidates like Roman Saini and you'll get the same re
ply that its never the number of hours that matter. Even 6 hours are more than e
nough to get you through if your concentration is at its highest while studying
during those 6 hours.
Coming back to your question in a more straight-forward manner, yes, you can may
be study for 12 hours on a particular day but regularly, on a daily basis? No, I
don't think that is possible for any normal human being. Not even the one who'l
l be getting AIR 1. So, better stop wasting your thinking about the hours and st
art giving the best you can with your utmost concentration from today itself.
More importantly, the way the pattern is changing, you don't need to keep sittin
g with a book in your hand to gain the required knowledge. Surf on the internet.
Go through interesting and important articles all around on various news websit
es. This will not only let you gain but also act as a little break from the mono
tonous routine of studying from books. Times have changed so take the advantage
dude! This way you might even cross your target of 12 hours and won't even reali
se.
All the best, man. May your efforts bear fruit.

Here I am going to tell you 8 tips. If you follow those 8 tips then you may prob
ably be able to concentrate on your studies.
1. Understand your biological potential.
Every body has its own potential.
One is able to study whole night, or one is able to study at morning.
This is up to you that how
you utilize your potential.
2. Make a why note.
It is very difficult to make concentration for a long time to maintain your conc
entration for a long period of span you should make sure why note. That is you w
rite on a blank paper why are you studying? What will be the consequences of you
r labour that you're going to do for one year? And then paste that paper just be
fore your studying table this will help you not losing your concentration.
3. Don't panic
If there is few days left for examination then don't panic if you are not able t
o control yourself then think that the time you are using to panic will not goin
g to help you in academics. Take the time to convert your panic time to your stu
dy time.

4. Eat healthy food

Don't drink caffeine or energy drink these drink will give you instant energy bu
t for very short period of time then you will feel tired and then you will throw
off your books. So I eat as many as green vegetable or yellow vegetables.
5. Take 8 hrs of rest
You should take 7 to 8 hours rest daily, so that you can you can concentrate on
next day.
6. Give reward to yourself
Give yourself a reward when you complete your objectives study in such a way tha
t It's become interesting when you do your homework or if you remember your form
ulas then give yourself a reward you can eat chocolate or listen music.
7. Study in Silence
You should study in complete silence if the voice of television from other room
or the traffic sound is coming from outside the window that are unavoidable then
you can use white noise which are easily available on Internet download it plug
the earphone and then start studying its unique frequency will cut the outside
sound
8. Keep your phone aside
Keep your phone away from your study table try to lock it on the locker. Because
Facebook notification comes when it is unavoidable to avoid it so keep your pho
ne aside.
