1) Do you think only certain individuals are attracted to these types of

jobs, or is it the characterstics of the jobs themselves that are

satisfying?.

I would say both , These persons must have the personality that fit these jobs but at the same
time the occupation has to appeal to their personality , as stated by John Bishop I might be
liitle skewed to the workaholic, but realistically , expecting 90 to 100 hours a week is not at all
unusual.
The passage stated that some individuals are exhilarated by such professions that entails 60
hour or more work week with constant traveling and little time for anything else .This is
articulated in Hollands personality job fit theory , that satisfaction and the propensity to leave a
job depend on the degree to which individuals successfully match their personalities to an
occupational environment. Irene Tse reaffirmed this when she stated that Ive done this for 10
years and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of days in my career when I didnt
want to come to work. Every day I wake up and I cant wait to get here. This indicates that
persons with the personality types congruent with their chosen professions are more satisfied.
Persons with positive core self-evaluations see more challenge in their jobs which results in more
satisfaction.

2) What charactersistics of thes jobs might contribute to increased levels

of job satisfaction.

These different types of occupations mentioned in the passage are those that require mentally
challenging work . Work that give employees an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge
skills and abilities and offer a variety of tasks, freedom to carry out and feedback on how well
they are doing would make work mentally challenging. Jobs with too little challenge are seen as
boring. Jobs such as these have to be challenging and interesting as the amount of pay would not
be enough.

3) Given that the four individuals we just read about tend to be satisfied
with their jobs, how might this satisfaction relate to their job
performance, citizenship behavior and turnover.

Early studies have shown that a happy worker is a productive worker but these studies are not
totally clear as to whether it is increased productivity that causes job satisfaction or vice versa.
But it can be seen that organizations with more satisfied employees tend to be more effective.
Organizational citizenship is discretionary behavior that is not part of an employees formal job
requirements, but that nevertheless promotes the effective functioning of the organization,
desired citizenship includes volunteering for extra job activities, tolerating occasional work
related impositions and constructive statements about work group and organization. Satisfied
employees such as John Bishop and David Clark might be more prone to go beyond the call of
duty because they want to reciprocate their positive experiences.
Turnover is the voluntary and involuntary permanent withdrawal from an organization.
Satisfaction is negatively related to turnover. Clarks statement in the passage there are plenty of
people who would love to have this job. Theyre knocking on the door all the time would
suggest high job satisfaction and that he would not be leaving this job any time soon.

4) Recall David Clarks statement that there are plenty of people who
would love to have his job. Theyre knocking on the door all the time.
How might Clarks perceptions that has a job many others desire
contribute to his job satisfaction.?

Job Satisfaction is an individuals attitude towards his/her job. Job satisfaction occurs when
employees experience work that entails increases in achievement, recognition, challenging work,
responsibility and advancement. In David Clarks case his job satisfaction is as result of
challenging work, this is what helps him to attain his values expectations and standards. So for
people wanting to gain what he is already achieving would make him a happy employee ,
which in turn would contribute to him having high job satisfaction.
