Introduction
What are the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics?
The standards are a shared set of expectations for each grade level in the area of math. They def ine
what students should understand and be able to do. The standards are designed to be more rigorous
and allow for students to justify their thinking. They ref lect the knowledge that is necessary for success in
college and beyond.
The following are Mathematical Practices as outlined in the Common Core State Standards.
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.*
