STATION (1) COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Candidate Information:
This is a 9 minute station. You will talk to the mother of the child who has the
problem introduced below. The examiner will stay silent throughout this time. You
will have 4 minutes before the station commences to read this information. You are
not expected to gather any further history during the consultation. Please take this
information sheet in the examination room with you. You will be marked mainly on
your communication skills, not on the number of facts, which you will deal with, but
if you give wrong information or advice you will penalize. Please do not leave the
room until you are told to do so.

Mrs. laila, the mother of 3 mos old ali.

Back ground information:


Ali is 3 mos old boy, born preterm by emergency CS due to placental
separation at 26 weeks gestation. Surfactant and ventilatory support were
given for lung immaturity. He did well during his stay in NICU. On last routine
check up visit, he has social smile and cooing. He can follow moving objects.
the assigned consultant ordered for palivizumab injection course to be given
starting from the next visit. Mrs. laila was told that these would be extra shots
for her baby. Now she wants to know the reason for giving these injections

Task: inform Mrs. laila about the indications of giving


palivizumab.

Back ground information: you were doing rounds in the emergency


department where you saw Hamad, a 4 years old asthmatic child who
presented with acute asthma attack.he was tachypneic and his SPO2 was
96%. he was given two doses of nebulized ventolin and ipratropium promide.
he stated to improve. You prescribed for hamad dexamethazone as a single
oral dose besides his inhalers
Dr. adel asked you about the justification of giving dexa

Task: to discuss the point of giving dexa.

history from a mother or role player and to discuss your management plan with the
examiner. The child is not present. You will have up to 4 minutes before the start of
this station to read this page and prepare yourself. You may make notes in the sheet
provided. When the bell sounds, you will be invited in to the exam room. You will
have 13 minutes with the mother or role player with a warning when you have 4
minutes left. You will have short time to reflect on the case and while parents leaving
the room. You will have approximately 9 minutes with the examiner

fadi is 7 yrs old boy complaining of fever, cough and breathlessness since 4
weeks. He has decreased activity with poor appetite 2 weeks ago; treatment
was given without improvement. On examination he looks tachypneic and
tachycardiac, his HR 150, respiratory rate around 40per mints .blood pressure
is 100/70 and his oxygen sat. is 96 %. He has median sternotomy scar . He
has just arrived with his family from another district 2 mos back. For your kind
evaluation and further management.
