1. Signs
ZODIAC/SIGNS AND THE PLANETS

The Ecliptic is he Sun's path in the heavens. It passes exactly through the center of zodiac longitudinally.
The zodiac is a broad band or belt in heavens extending 9 degrees on either side of the Ecliptic. It is an
endless circle. In order to measure distances along this circle an arbitrary point is established. This point is
called as the first point of Aries. The zodiac revolves once in a day on its axis from east to west. The ecliptic
is divided into 12 equal compartments, called the signs of the zodiac. Each compartment covers an arc
of 30 degrees. Each sign has its own peculiar qualities, attributed to it by the ancient Maha rishi's after
careful and profound observations and meditation.
Each degree of the zodiac is divided into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds. The Vedic seers
counted time in Ghatikas and Vighatikas. Other time measuring units are also there but just as minutes
and seconds are generally spoken so also are the Ghatikas and Vighatikas are used. 2 &1/2 Ghatikas are
equal to 60 minutes or 1 Hour 2 &1/2 Vighatikas =1 minute.
The ecliptic is marked by 27 constellations or Nakshatras called the lunar mansions because the Moon has
a special connection with them.
The time taken by the Moon to traverse these 27 stellar mansions is counted as one Lunar month. It is
roughly 27.3 days. Each constellation is divided into 4 quarters and are known as the Nakshatras padas.
There are in all 108 Nakshatra padas in the zodiac. One pada is equal to 3-1/3degree of celestial arc. The
lunar mansions are also called as the Rasis or Radical signs of moon. The Rasis and Nakshatras are reckoned
from the same point i.e. zero degree longitude of Aries or Mesha.
THE PLANETARY SYSTEM

The planetary system, which is also known as the solar system or Surya mandala, consists of the Sun and
other planets held by the gravitational power of the Sun and they revolve around him. The period of
revolution differs according to the size, distance and speed of the planet. The Vedic astrology names the Sun
as Ravi, Moon as Chandra, Mars as Mangal, Mercury as Budha, Jupiter as Guru, Venus as Shukra and
Saturn as Shani. Besides these, the ascending and descending nodes of Moon (Rahu & Ketu) are also
taken as apratyaksha Grahas or invisible influences.
The word Graha is specific to Indian Horoscope and it symbolizes the heavenly bodies influencing the life on
this earth and is not a classification solar system as Star, Planets, Satellites etc as is done in modern
astronomy. Each Graha is the ruler of 3 group of stars and is called as the stellar lord. Thus the 9 Grahas
rule the 27 constellations.
According to a very ancient astronomical treatise known as the Surya siddhanta, Saturn is the most distant
planet from the Earth. Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Moon come in serial order of their distances
from the earth.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto and other Planets which are found over various periods are not included in Vedic
astrology, by the seers for reasons best known to them. It cannot be said that they were unaware of their
existence. When they could collect so much of information by Meditation they could also have collected the
influence of Uranus etc. Instead they have mentioned the name and qualities of 9 upagrahas which add to
the information given by the major Grahas. They took those alone, which influenced the life on this earth. All
planets rotate on their own axis and also revolve around the Sun too.
The rate of motion of planets has been worked out:
The Sun moves @ of roughly 1degree a day or takes 365 1/4 days for one complete revolution.
Moon = 27 days and 7 hours
Mars = 18 months
Mercury = Requires same time as the sun but his proximity to the sun makes him wobbly and he takes 27
days to cover one zodiacal sign.
Jupiter = 1 year
Venus = has more or less the same velocity as sun
Saturn moves for 30 months in a sign or takes 30 years to make one round.
Rahu and Ketu take 18 months in each sign and complete one round in the reverse motion in 18 years.
They are twelve in number and are ruled by the planets are as follows:
You will see that the planets Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn rule
over two signs. These planets have special attention to one of their signs,
and this sign is known as their moola-trikona sign.
The signs Aries, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius are the moola-trikona
sign of the planets Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and. Saturn, respectively.
The signs possess the positive and negative aspects of their lords according
to their nature and according to the strength of their lords.
The most important quality is that they lead us to infer the extent of
fructifications of the significations of a particular house. For example, if the
sign Libra falls in a house and its lord Venus is in full strength, the
significations of the house will flourish to a very affluent level of the society
in which a person is living.
According to the Vedic astrology, Rashis/Lagnas (Zodiac Signs) play a big
role when determining the aspects on human lives. There are 27
Naskshasthras (constellations) which are used in different combinations in
Vedic astrology. Those Naskshasthras were built with 12 zodiac signs, 12

houses and 9 planets. Distributing each of these 12 zociac signs in 12
houses and placing 9 planets accordingly is the way to those combinations.
Actually this is done by considering where and when a person is born. So
here we can have some understanding about how it is important these
Zodiac Signs in Vedic astrology.

Signs are called "Rashis" (raw-shees) in Sanskrit. This table shows the signs with
their rulers, Sanskrit names and symbols, etc. As you can see, the signs are the
same as used in Western astrology. However, the nature of the signs, what they do,
and the demigods behind them, who control them, are vastly different in Vedic
astrology.
Note: Vedic astrology differs from Western or Tropical astrology mainly in that it
uses the fixed zodiac as opposed to the moving zodiac. Most people's "Sun Sign",
that which you can get from the newspaper each day, is usually one sign back when
the chart is refigured using Vedic astrology. So, the first surprise using the Vedic
system is that you are no longer the Sun Sign you always thought you were.
However, if you were born in the last 5 days or so of the Western sign month, then
you will probably still be the same sign in the Vedic system.

A. Relationship of Yoga-Forming Planets to

the Specific Ascendant of the Chart
Vedic astrologers understand that planets
perform differently for each Ascendant. In
fact, this is the basis of the concept of
functional or temporal benefics and malefics.
E.g. Jupiter does not function well for Libra
and Taurus (Venus) Ascendants because of
the houses it rules for each Lagna. For Taurus
rising, Jupiter rules the 8th and 11th houses;
for Libra rising, Jupiter rules the 3rd and
6th houses. Positive yogas formed by Jupiter
for these Ascendants have less potency. This

Rulership: Planets and their Rulers

The planetary ruler of your Sun sign is important, and its myths and attributes tell you a lot about
your own nature. For example, if your Sun is Sagittarius, your planetary ruler is Jupiter. You radiate in
an expansive, faithful way, just as Jupiter acts as a cosmic guide to life's lucky breaks. And the house
in which your Sun sign falls, is the life area in which you expand. The planetary ruler of your Sun's
house position is like the host, who directs that Jupiter-ruled quest toward a particular life theme or
lesson.
Each planet is a symbolic ruler of one (or two) Zodiac signs, and this helps you understand another

getting astrology. Planets in their own signs, like Moon in Cancer, are said to be dignified, and that's
a placement of strength. And yet, that Cancer Moon may sit in the Second House, the natural house of
Taurus, ruled by Venus. This tells us that the Cancer Moon will seek to nurture via the senses, and
likely be a great gourmand!

The Fixed Signs of the Zodiac ultimately represent steady and stable people. The fixed
element has a consistent energy which enhances a smooth and tolerant demeanor. A great

people are very fond of material possession. They are determined individuals who are
persistent and appreciate preserved tradition in their families.
Leo (July 23 August 22) The Leo fixed fire sign is aware of the purpose in life. These
people appreciate self-expression and are essentially capable of gaining personal control.
This sign is single-minded and is liable to being characterized as a Lion sitting on his
throne, ego and all. However, Leos are also warm and kind, lending a helping hand
contributing to the general community.
Scorpio (October 23 November 21) The Scorpio fixed water sign is deep with feelings
and emotions. This person is thought to be cold-like-ice sometimes, signaling the water
aspect, because of their solid characteristics. However, when Scorpio is able to get to
know their fellow humans on an intimate or emotional level, they feel more comfortable to
open up and be less of a closed individual. Scorpios have a desire to find out their own

Aquarius (January 20 February 18) The Aquarius fixed air sign usually has his/her mind
up about anything and possibly everything. They appreciate interacting with other people
and have an instinct of how to relate to their fellow counterparts. Their goals typically
revolve around reform, and ultimately want to make the world a better place for
themselves as well as human kind. However, as they do want to essentially make the future
superior for all, they work on their goals in a timely manner and are not impulsive. They

Fixed signs are generally dependable people. They have an internal energy supply that
helps them sustain an immense power to learn how to perform tasks consequently. This also
aids them in starting and finishing projects; therefore, they are fit to be involved in long
term projects, if they would just overlook and get over their stubbornness streak. Fixed
signs are able to listen to orders and follow rules, habitually. They prefer to pursue a safe
orderly format in order to achieve their goals and essentially become successful in any
field.
The Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

Water signs of the zodiac represent a calm-like exterior. Water, on the surface, appears
smooth, flowing, and intuitive. More distinctively, water runs deep, is exceptionally
mysterious, and displays immense sensitivity. Water people are extremely emotionally
built. Their emotions ultimately define how they relate to people in their relationships; in

Cancer (June 22 July 22) is a cardinal water sign, meaning that this person is more likely
to initiate things. They are born to nurture their family and friends. Their main goal in life
is be part of a family, and to have familial responsibilities. They desperately want to
protect and provide for their families. This aspect makes Cancer serious people. They are
also incredibly sensitive.
Scorpio (October 23 November 22) is a fixed water sign, able to expand their
perspective focus into depth. Scorpios are loyal people, who are observing and analytical.
Their to-do list requires financial and sexual intimacy as well as overall satisfaction. They
are also brazen negotiators, who elicit mysterious-like characteristics. Sometimes intense
people, Scorpios are able to manipulate a situation by utilizing movement and correct
words.
Pisces (February 19 March 20) is a mutable water sign, able to change and adjust

Capricorn (December 22-January 19): The Capricorn earth cardinal sign is assertive but
aside from all the previous signs, considers the final result. These people are more
concerned with their reputation but are also able to plan accordingly to fulfill a task. Their
motives for success instill their capability to become famous, which a fellow Capricorn
wont mind. Material and physical rewards are appealing to Capricorns, and after their hard
work, they expect these types of rewards to be granted to them on a silver platter.
What all these signs have in common is that they are all Cardinal Signs, initiators and
visionaries at best. They are able to make things happen. They are also, interestingly, the
start of the year; Aries signs emerge in spring, Cancer in summer, Libra in fall, and
Capricorn in winter. Cardinal signs become prominent archetypes of the birth of something
new. They encourage opportunity and vitality. In addition to these signs having the
ultimate potential to cause certain things to occur, because they were born in the start of

The Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

The fire signs of the zodiac are just as they seem: intense, controlling, and strong. These

positive. These people are truly ambitious, and luck is usually on their side. They have big
dreams and are not afraid to go after them. Some people may find Sagittariuss actions
too impetuous, but this comes naturally to them. Enthusiastically driven, they believe any
task is worth trying and ultimately expect to complete it successfully.
Fire overall evokes a power hungry person who is a born leader, motivator, and optimist.
Fire people are born with a destined spark, which initiates their desire for complete
freedom and independence. They follow their own path confidently and are natural gogetters. While sometimes impulsive, the fire signs generate willfulness, competitive spirit,
honesty, and straightforwardness. Their energy will get anyone excited and motivated to
