4.1 Design:

EVALUATION SUBJECT:
PNEUTEK FASTENER USED WITH WOOD STRUCTURAL
PANEL DIAPHRAGMS
1.0 EVALUATION SCOPE
Compliance with the following code:

2012 and 2009 International Building Code (IBC)

2013 Abu Dhabi International Building Code (ADIBC)

The 2013 ADIBC is based on the 2009 IBC. 2009 IBC code sections
referenced in this report are the same sections in the 2013 ADIBC.

Property evaluated:
Structural
2.0 USES
The Pneutek fasteners are used in horizontal diaphragms
to attach the wood structural panels to steel ledgers or
structural steel supports.
3.0 DESCRIPTION
3.1 General:

4.1.1 Wood Structural Panel Deck Diaphragms with

Steel Ledger and Wood Supports: When the Pneutek
fasteners are used to attach wood structural panels to steel
ledgers, the allowable diaphragm loads associated with the
fasteners are as specified in Table 4.2A of the AF&PA
Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS)
and 2009 IBC Table 2306.2.1(1), for 10d common nails
and 3-inch-wide (76.2 mm) wood framing members at
panel edges.
The connection of the steel ledger to structural loadresisting elements of the building and the ability of the steel
ledger and other structural elements to carry the shear
loads and other superimposed loads must be investigated.
Calculations and details must be furnished to the code
official for approval.
4.1.2 Wood Structural Panel Deck Diaphragms with
Steel Supports: Pneutek 32xxx, H32xxx, H34xxx,
HL44xxx, SDL 45xxx, and SDL 66xxx fasteners can be
used to fasten wood structural panel horizontal diaphragms
3
to minimum /16-inch (4.76 mm) thick structural steel
members. Allowable shear values and fastener spacing
requirements are noted in Table 1. An estimate of the
diaphragm deflection can be made using the equation in
Section 4.2.2 of SDPWS, referenced in Section 2306.2 of
the IBC, assuming wood supports and that the fasteners
are equivalent to 10d common nails. Where blocking of the
diaphragm is required, it must be provided as required by
the code.
4.2 Installation:

The fasteners are identified as 32xxx, H32xxx, H34xxx,

HL44xxx, SDL 45xxx, and SDL 66xxx, and have a
minimum shank diameter of 0.144 inch (3.66 mm), a
minimum head diameter of 0.315 (8.00 mm) and a
minimum head thickness of 0.073 inch (1.85 mm). The
fasteners are available in various lengths. The steel used
in the manufacture of the fasteners is heat treated to a
Rockwell C hardness of 52-56 and has a minimum tensile
strength of 240,000 psi (1648 MPa).
3.2 Steel Supports and Ledgers:
The structural steel to which the fasteners are attached
must comply with the minimum requirements of ASTM A36
and have a minimum thickness as noted in Section 4.0.

4.2.1 General: The Pneutek fasteners must be installed

in accordance with the report and the manufacturers
published installation instructions. A copy of these
instructions must be available on the jobsite at all times
during installation.
Fastener placement requires the use of pneumatically
powered tool in accordance with Pneutek installation
instructions.
The wood structural panels must be fastened to the steel
members at the spacing indicated in Section 4.1.1 or 4.1.2,
as applicable. The minimum distance from the centerline of
3
the fasteners to the edge of the panel must be /8 inch
(9.5 mm), except as noted in Section 4.2.2. Fasteners

must penetrate through the steel member and must

1
protrude a minimum of /4 inch (6.35 mm). Multiple rows of
fasteners may be installed if required by the design. The
remainder of the diaphragm must be constructed in
accordance with the code.
4.2.2 Wood Structural Panel Deck Diaphragms with
Steel Ledger and Wood Supports: When used, the
1
optional steel strap must be installed as follows: A 1 /2wide (38.1 mm), No. 18 gage, galvanized steel strap
(minimum 0.0428 inches [1.09 mm]) complying with
minimum ASTM A653 SS Grade 33 requirements is
placed on top of the wood structural panel directly above
the steel ledger. The SDL 45xxx and SDL 66xxx fasteners
15
are driven through the steel strap to attach minimum /32inch (11.9 mm) thick wood structural panels to a minimum
1
/4-inch-thick (6.35 mm) structural steel ledger.
3

The fasteners must be installed a minimum of /4 inch

1
(19 mm) from the wood structural panel edge and /4 inch
(6.35 mm) from the edge of the steel ledger.
5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE
The Pneutek fasteners described in this report comply
with, or are suitable alternatives to what is specified in,
those codes listed in Section 1.0 of this report, subject to
the following conditions:
5.1 The fasteners are manufactured and identified in
accordance with this report.

5.3 Allowable shear values are as noted in this report.

5.4 Calculations demonstrating that the applied loads are
less than the allowable loads shown in this report
must be submitted to the code official for approval.
The design of the diaphragm, chords, collectors
deflection and wall anchorage must be in accordance
with the appropriate sections of the IBC and
ASCE 7. The calculations must be prepared by a
registered design professional where required by the
statutes of the jurisdiction in which the project is
constructed.
5.5 Use of fasteners in contact with preservative-treated
or fire-retardant-treated wood is not permitted.
5.6 The wood structural panel deck must be covered by
an approved roof covering.
6.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED
Data in accordance with the applicable sections of the
ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Fasteners Power-driven
into Concrete, Steel and Masonry Elements (AC70), dated
June 2014.
7.0 IDENTIFICATION
The fasteners are identified in the field by means of the
companys name (Pneutek), the evaluation report number
(ESR-2902) on the cartons, and the following symbol
stamped on the head of each fastener:

5.2 Fastener installation complies with this report and the

Pneutek, Inc., instructions. In the event of conflict
between this report and Pneutek published
instructions, this report governs.

1

Cases are described in Table 4.2A of SDPWS and 2009 IBC Table 2306.2.1(1) of the code.
These values are for short-time loads due to wind or earthquake. For shear loads of normal or permanent load duration as defined in the
AF&PA National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS), these values must be multiplied by 0.63 or 0.56, respectively.
