TITLE OF THE LESSON: TO TIP OR NOT TO TIP
DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS: 15 ADVANCED STUDENTS
TIME: 50 MINUTES

AIMS:
to practice the language of agreeing and disagreeing
To express their opinions on the topic
To enrich students vocabulary with new words and expressions

LEAD-IN
In order to introduce the topic of the lesson the teacher gives the students several images
showing people in different situations (a taxi driver and his client, a doctor and his patient, a
porter helping a lady with her luggage, a customer in a shoe shop etc). The students are
encouraged to guess the way in which they are related.
If the students find it difficult to come closer to the topic, the teacher writes To Improve
Promptness on the blackboard and asks for the connection between it and the pictures, drawing
attention the initials tip. She then explains to them that in the 18 th century, coffee houses in
Britain had a box on each table. A notice on ach box read: To Insure Promptness. Customers
were encouraged to put money in the box for better service. Soon the money became known by
its initials: TIP.

DISCUSSION
The teacher conducts an open class discussion on the following questions:
Is it normal to tip in your country?
When? How much should you give?
Do you always tip when you should?
How much do you give?
Have you had any good or bad experiences when tipping?

LANGUAGE IN USE
The students asked to complete the spaces in a set of sentences related to tipping which
will help them in the following activity.
1. We wouldnt need to tip if employees paywage.
2. I dont like to offend so I always tip just to be on the.side!
3. Some people have the reputation of being .with their money.
4. I hate it when I hear people saying, Just keep the Its so patronizing.
5. Theres no.in tipping people youre never going to see again in your life.

I never tip no .. what the service has been like. I just dont do it on principle.

7. I dont think one person can ..down prejudices which are hundreds of years old.
8. In expensive restaurants youre paying through theanyway!

After having checked the answers and with problem words, the students are told
that they are going to reach a consensus in their pairs on a statement they draw from a
hat. They report their answers to the class who are asked to give their opinions on what
they hear.

Students are then given a list with people who are likely to receive tips. They have to say
who they would give tips to and why.

Should tips be made illegal after all, its just an excuse for employers to pay less?
Should tips in a restaurant be pooled and shared between all the waiters? Or should
Each waiter keep his or her own tip?
IN Britain a recent court ruling says that tips added to a bill and paid for by credit card belong to
the employer not the waiter. Do you think this is fair?
In Britain tips are taxed. Do you think this is fair?
