Reducing emergency hospital admissions

Adults with learning disabilities are more likely to be
admitted to hospital due to conditions that can often be
taken care of in the community with the right help.
This event will look at what is known about these
conditions and how we can improve how we take care of
them to reduce emergency hospital admissions.
These 2 events are aimed at those who have
responsibility for buying and providing healthcare
services for people with learning disabilities

Help shape the future of health and adult social

care regulation
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is now carrying out
the final stage of finding out what people think about its
big plan for 2016-2021.
The big plan (or strategy) will set out their ideas for
looking at how they work to make sure they are flexible
and work differently because of the changes taking place
in health and social care.
The consultation started on 11th January, they will be
asking members of the public and representatives from
public organisations what they think at some events.
These will give people the chance to talk about some of
the ideas in the plan and give feedback on them.

There is a Newcastle event on

26 January
From
from 1pm to 4pm

NHS England Publishes Report into Southern

Health
In December NHS England published an independent
report into the deaths of people with a learning disability
or mental health support needs at Southern Health NHS
Foundation Trust.
The report was ordered by NHS England following the
death of Connor Sparrowhawk in July 2013 in a unit in
Oxford run by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust.
Some of the reports main findings are:
Many investigations were of poor quality and took too
long to complete
There was a lack of leadership, focus or time spent in
the Trust on carefully reporting and investigating
deaths
There was a lack of family involvement in
investigations after a death
Opportunities for the Trust to learn and improve were
missed

Health Charter for providers

People with learning disabilities often experience health
problems, but a lot can be done by social care providers,
working together with people with learning disabilities,
family carers and their health colleagues to improve the
situation.
The Health Charter is designed to support social care
providers to improve the health and well-being of people
with learning disabilities.
Organisations and social care staff can sign the charter
to say what they will do to help people with learning
disabilities be more healthy.
There is a set of resources and more information
available at http://bit.ly/1Q24zFd

Keeping Out of Trouble: Alternatives to Prison

or Hospital
People with learning disabilities are over-represented in
the criminal justice system. A series of reports looks at
the increased risks faced: of poor experiences in the
system and poor support to reduce re-offending.
The Ideas Collective have made a discussion paper with
examples of good practice and initial ideas for
improvements in how the system works and in services.

You can read this paper on their website on the link
