Understanding Student Reading Interest

Interest contained in each individual is different. Interest in a person gives


in its activities to achieve goals. WS Winkel (2004:188) "The interest is
defined as the persistent tendency of subjects to feel interested in the
subject or a certain subject. And was pleased to learn that the study
". According to the Slameto Hilgard (2003:57) gives the formula of interest
is as follows "is persisting fendency to pay attention to an enjoy some
activity or content" that interest is a permanent tendency to notice and
remember
some
of
the
activities,
attention
constantly
accompanied pleasure. While Muhibbin Shah (2003:136) states "The
interest (interest) and the mean trend of high excitement or great desire
for something".

Another opinion expressed Slameto (2003:180) "The interest is a preferred


taste and interest in a matter or activity, without being told". Interest is
essentially the acceptance of a relationship between yourself with
something outside themselves. The stronger or closer the relationship the
greater the interest. According to Ibrahim Bafadal (2005:191) says that
"The interest that could be classified as a trait or behavior (trait or
attitude) that have tendencies or certain tendencies". Meanwhile,
according to Sutarno NS (2006:27) that "The interest of one's fellow
feeling that something is high, the passion or desire someone of
something"
Interest may arise because of the habit. This is in accordance with the
opinion quoted by Bernard Sardiman AM (2001:74) stated "The interest
arises not tiba-tiba/spontan but rather arise as a result of participation,
experience, practice at the time of study or work". Interest a person can
determine what activities will be selected. So the interests of one another
that shows the difference.
Interest is defined as a condition that occurs when one looks at the
characteristics or temporary situation associated with the desires or needs
themselves. What is seen is certainly going to arouse one's interest to see
how far it has links with its own interests.This suggests that the interest is
the tendency of one's soul to an object (usually accompanied by feelings
of pleasure), because it felt there was interest in such objects.(Sardiman
AM, 2001:74)

Opinion is corroborated by the opinion quoted by Ibrahim Marksheffel


Bafadal (2005:192) gives an opinion on the interest as follows:
1. Interest is not the result of human nature, but can be formed and
cultivated, learned and developed.
2. Interest that can be linked to specific purposes for the act.
3. Narrowly, the interest was associated with a person's social
circumstances and emotions.
4. Interest and it usually took the initiative to lead to behavior or human
nature.
Interest can also arise because of curiosity. This is in accordance with the
opinion that Weber was quoted by Muhibbin Shah (2003:136) "The
interest depends on many internal factors such as concentration,
curiosity, motivation, and needs".
Based on various definitions of interest can be concluded that the
definition of an element of interest:
1. There is a tendency interested or excited about something.
2. Interest can be established, learned and developed, so it is not a trait of
interest.
3. Interest may arise because of the habit.
Ideally, a child must have an interest in something so that he can learn in
earnest. The size of interest will greatly affect a person's attitude toward
the activity he was doing.Similarly, in terms of reading. For some people,
reading can be interpreted as a hobby that is part of the daily
preoccupations. For students in particular, interest in reading is something
very necessary for those that are expected to facilitate the learning
process.With self-interest in reading the students will likely be able to
motivate them to learn to be independent so it can help to achieve the
maximum learning achievement.
Reading activities can enrich one's knowledge, in simple terms is defined
by reading the Big Indonesian Dictionary (2002:83) "Reading is to see and
understand the contents of what is written (by express)". According to
Ibrahim Bafadal (2005:192) that "Reading is a process of capturing or
acquiring the concepts intended by the author, interpret, evaluate the
author's concepts, and reflect, or act as intended of those concepts."
Thus, it can be said of reading not only operate the various skills to
understand words and sentences, but also the ability to interpret and

evaluate so as to obtain a comprehensive understanding. Almost the


same opinion expressed by providing an understanding of the nature of
reading as follows:
Reading is a complex activity that includes physical and mental. Mental
activity includes memory and comprehension. People can read well if they
can see the letters denganjelas, the eyes move swiftly, given the symbols
with the appropriate language, and have reason enough to understand the
reading. (Mulyono Abdurrohman, 1999:200)
Reading is a complex and deliberate activity, in this case the form of the
thought process in which the action consists of various works in an
integrated way of thinking leads to one goal, namely to understand the
overall meaning of text exposure. By reading a person will gain new
understandings, gain knowledge, gain new ideas, expand the view so that
later they have high intelligence and civilization that is useful to himself
and useful to others.
Based on the various definitions above can be concluded that the
definition of an element to read:
1. A physical and mental activity in understanding written language
2. Physical activity associated with the senses of sight reading
3. Mental activity includes reading memory and comprehension
Students who love reading can facilitate learning and improve academic
achievement.Therefore, teachers or educators need to guide learners to
be more fond of reading. In the opinion of Sutarno NS (2006:27) that "a
person reading can be interpreted as a tendency of elevated liver that
person to a particular source of reading".
Habit of reading can help a person to obtain useful information for daily
life, for smooth operation and increased effectiveness for achievement as
well as a basic capability is very important for the progress of society and
the individuals themselves. This is in accordance with the opinion Suyatmi
(2000:38) says that "reading is a situation arising from a strong desire. It
arises because of the desire of certain motifs that have a great urge to do
an activity to read "
Reading craze will not grow by itself but must be fostered through the
learning process.Therefore, to develop interest in reading, students are
guided to learn to feel not as an obligation but as a necessity. Therefore, it

can be concluded that the definition of interest in reading is a situation


arising from the desire to perform reading activities and to achieve a
goal. Basically an interest in reading among individuals to each other
differently depending on the size of the motives they have read.
Based on various definitions of interest and read it then it can be
concluded that the definition of an element of interest to read:
1. Interest and pleasure in reading activities
2. The existence of satisfaction after reading activities
3. The emergence of interest in reading can occur because of the habit of
reading
4. The existence of a reading comprehension
Interest in reading is divided into two, namely reading interests and
reading interests patterned spontaneous. Spontaneous interest in reading
is reading activities undertaken voluntarily or spontaneously self initiative
without any encouragement or external command. While the definition of
reading is the reading pattern that occurs due to external factors, such as
a command from the teacher or teachers or parents.
While students in government regulations in 1990 was 30 students
enrolled and studying at a particular college. Further, according to
Sarwono (1978) "Student is any person who is officially registered to
attend lessons in college with a limit of around 18-30 years of age". In
addition, the opinion also expressed by Knopfemacher matching (in
Suwono, 1978) that "the student is a degree candidate beings who in his
involvement with the college (which is increasingly integrated with the
community), is expected to be educated and intellectual candidates". Is a
group of students who obtained their status in society because of ties to
the university. Students also are potential property or young scholars in a
society that is often provided by various predicates.
Of opinion on the bias explained that the student is carried by a person's
status because of its relationship with the college candidates are expected
to be intellectual.
Student interest in reading can be defined as a situation arising as a result
of students in themselves a strong desire to perform reading activities.
