Abstract
Education is a foundation stone for the society to prosper and to live harmoniously.
Education promotes the knowledge, skills, habits, and values. Education is something
which a person learns from every moment of his life. The society inculcates the values
in an individual and leaves an impression more than any teacher. Over a period of
years, the societal values have been diminishing. Therefore, it is necessary develop the
holistic citizenship education.
Introduction
Education is a lifelong process of learning. Each and every moment from our day-to-day
life, we learn the things. The society is the greatest teacher ever had to any individual. It
inculcates the values to the individual, which implies, society leaves a greater impact on
the minds of the learner. For a prosperous and fun-loving atmosphere, the society
should be more at peace. The society is we. We all have to educate ourselves in a more
positive direction rather than other way. The most distressing point is over a period of
years, there has been a decline in the values in the society. Once peace-loving society
has changed to intolerance, violence based society. The society has been steered by
greediness, fundamentalism, indifference to fellow human beings etc. The atmosphere
has to be reversed.
The need of values filled society
The valueless society will be replica of dark ages where people are afraid of their fellow
beings and death of knowledge. Such kind of society will be filled with ignorance and
backwardness. Our forefathers were always inclined towards scientific based
knowledge and encouraged their children to study. The rise of intolerance and
fundamentalism has reversed the trend, rather than focus on scientific based knowledge
people were steered towards superstitious.
This trend can be reversed when our education is more outward and positive look. This
kind of education not only helps in national unity but also towards Social Cohesion.
The knowledge spreads forwards only by discussions. The important value that
education teaches us is to respect other people views, which is at a very low point in our
country at the present time. Each and every voice is condemned without giving a
chance to the peoples to hear the other version of the story. This does more harm than
the good in the long run as we are completely deleting other version of story from the
history pages. So, the existing version will not give the complete picture.
The main ingredient to be imbibed in the peoples of mind is tolerance. This value
tolerance will change the nation from violence based to peace-loving nation once
again. The second value that our education needed is questioning mentality. This value
is much the more needed to move forward in the life. The dogmas education will not
lead to anywhere, questioning everything from scriptures to present day ideas and not
resigning until you get answer is the strongest quality necessary in the present day

times. This quality has to be imbibed by the society. Ultimately, the values teach us the
life and how we all should live in a given situation and it will give us an idea about right
and wrong.
Why value based education is important:
Is values based education is necessary? From the dawn, there was always been a
conflict between a right and wrong in this society. The right and wrong is classified
based on the values prevailing in the society. But at the end of the day, there are few
values which are universally right though vast majority of people voted for wrong values.
For example, during colonial period the European nations were expanding their
horizons at the expense of other country citizens. Though they felt that it is right on their
part but the result of war I and war II reflected that the paths chosen by them were
wrong. In the similar manner, the rise of fundamentalists threatening the social fabric in
our country will do more harm than the good. The scar left by disturbance of socialcohesion will always be gimp on our society. These fundamentalists not only disturbing
the peace but also silencing the voices rose against them.
The soul of constitution Socialism, Democracy, Brotherhood and Liberty are
threatened in these situations. In the prevailing atmosphere, value based education is
more the important.
How can we do?
The great Phislosopher Socrrates had said "Education is not the filling of a vessel but
the kindling of a flame". Our education should be manifestation of all the values. It
should make the citizen to take best decision in any given situation.
The values such as kindness, truthfulness, showing gratitude, appreciating the love, etc
has to be taught at every level. Our education should be more of understanding rather
than score or marks driven. The flame in the individual has to be kindled rather than
forcing him / her to study the age old things. It should open their minds and they should
come forward themselves for seeking the knowledge. This kind of culture will transform
our society from intolerant to tolerant, violent based to peace-loving nation.
Imbibing values can be started at the early stage From home, school, peer groups etc.
All of them can inculcate the values. The real success of the education will matter when
the particular individual is able to distinguish between the right and wrong by himself or
herself. The main goal of the education should be towards achieving this stage. The
values can only be imbibed only by discussion and dissecting the every situation and
making them clear the various repercussion of the situation, this will make them
understand and appreciate of the positive values in the life.

Conclusion
Values cannot be forced, even if conveyed with good intentions. No real integration or
internalisation of a value can be achieved unless the learner agrees with it.
Communication is the key in this. India has to focus on this trait and this can be
developed with the cooperation of all. In value education, more than in the academics,
educators will never be able to impose their values. Rather, they must circulate in the
community of the learner and pass on, through discipline, the fine humanism of
respecting others in the same manner that one expects to be respected in return. As
this climate of respect surrounds the learners, they automatically imbibe an attitude of
tolerance towards their fellow men and this would certainly activate the human
development that eventually leads national development.
