How we won Super Bowl 100
Don't worry if plan A fails, there are 25 more letters in the alphabet
Ready, BREAK!
It was the last game of the year. The one the whole country had been waiting for. The
most watched event in America, the Super bowl. The match-up of two of the greatest teams in
American Football were in it to win it all. One team was going home victorious, the other
defeated. One team will hold their heads up high, the other looking at their feet. And I was
determined to make sure it was THEM that were going home empty handed. My name is George
Alexander, and Im going to tell the story about how we thought, and how we communicated in
Super bowl
I guess I should start at the beginning. My name is George Alexander, and if you couldnt
tell already, Im the starting quarterback for the Anchorage Eskimos, Alaskas one and only NFL
team. This was our first year making it to playoffs, and we were lucky enough to make it to the
super bowl. We were definitely the underdog pick at the beginning of the season. We had to faceoff against the Richmond Rockets, Virginias team. Truly, no one was expecting these two, new
teams that just rose up a few years ago to suddenly make it to the super bowl. It was anyones
game, the bets were 50/50. As the quarterback, I was naturally expected to carry our team home
to victory, bringing home our first trophy.

Being down in the stadium, on the field, with the whole nation watching you is nerve
wracking, to say the least. But once the game started, it felt like any other game. Except harder. A
lot harder. Richmond won the coin toss, and elected to kick-off the ball themselves. Which meant
they would need me almost instantly. Nervous as ever, I jogged onto the field. With my team by
my side, I felt more confident, and decided to go with are usual game plan, nothing fancy. It got
us to the super bowl, right? Are usual plan was to
Anyways, first quarter comes and goes, and right off the bat they have the lead with a
field goal, 0-3. It wasnt much. We could comeback. After all it was only the first quarter.
However, it was clear to us that our original game plan wasnt working. Plan A failed. So, we
needed a new strategy in order to win this game. Why dont we try running the ball? said Tori,
one of my wide receivers.
No, we cant run the ball; last time we tried that Johnson took a pretty big hit I replied
Ok fine, well keep passing it. But sooner or later were gonna have to run the ball
again replied Jackson, our other wide receiver
So, we kept passing the ball. We decided to go for shorter passes than before, and
miraculously, we managed to score a touchdown. Raymond, our kicker, was setting up for the
extra-point kick. It was a simple set up. Hes done it hundreds of times before. But suddenly, as
he was hustling onto the field, he trips really badly. He twists his ankle really badly. The on-site
paramedic examines the twisted ankle. Its not much, but its enough to take him out for a drive
or so. Everyone in the stadium at this point is really rowdy. Fans of the Eskimos were a little
nervous. Our back-up kicker, Joshua Grey, had not seen a single day where he played outside of
practice.

As Joshua lined up the kick, he looked worried, distracted almost. Im not sure
why. Maybe it was butterflies from being the first time on the field. Anyhow, it causes him to
slip, just missing the sweet spot that he needed to make the goal and get the point, leaving the
score at 6-3. As you could imagine, both the team and the stadium (or, half the stadium) were
very upset, with fans shouting, yelling down, wondering how you could mess up such a simple
kick
It didnt really matter though. We were still in the lead, if even by only a field goal. Our
kicker was out, and we needed a new plan, before the next half. We should run the ball Tori
insisted again.
Why should we? Our old plan seems to be working fine I promptly.
Barley piped up Johnson. They had almost picked it 3 times; we got lucky
Ok, fine. We need to change it up a little. But can you run? I said
Of course I can, what else am I supposed to do? Johnson replied.
So, we ran. The ball went as far as the 40 yard line when I had to pass the ball to Jackson.
Although it seemed like he caught the ball, I assume he didnt because he fumbled, and the
Rockets recovered the ball again. They managed to complete their drive with a touchdown, and
the extra point, making the game 6-10.
We need a new plan I said at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Youve been saying that the whole game, and yet here we are, sticking to the old plan at
the beginning of the fourth and losing by 4 promptly replied Tori
Well we ran the ball; that didnt work

Vieson 4
Yes it did, I just didnt pick up the pass. Plan B is working, we just need to make sure
we can pass right admitted Jackson
The fourth quarter felt like the longest quarter, and at the two minute warning the score
didnt change. The Rockets had just turned over the ball to us, and we had two minutes to score a
touchdown. We went with the plan.
Set, HUT I shout as I pass off the ball to Johnson
Dont worry! I hear him call as he runs through the mass of people that is the two
teams. He keeps going. And going. And going. We started at our 20 yard line, and Johnson
wasnt tackled until their 80 yard line. It was a great run, but it wasnt done yet. The stadium was
pumped: music was blaring, fans were cheering, and betters were worrying, waiting to see who
would win the game.
As we got to the goal, we found we needed to progress faster. With 30 seconds left, we
needed to throw the ball. So we did. Again. And again. And again. We made two incomplete
passes, and with the clock at 0:10, we couldnt afford a field goal. It was fourth down, 8 yards
to go. Let me run the ball one last time Johnson said
What? Are you crazy? We dont have enough time I replied, worriedly
Yes we do, trust me; just be quick
I had no choice but to trust him, since our pass attempts werent working. As I passed off
the ball to Johnson, I could see the worry in his eyes. He was nervous. I thought it was over, that
we lost.

Vieson 5
But we didnt. We won. He made it over and we won. It was the miracle play that we
needed, and we got it. We won. Our first victory was ours, and it was Johnson that got it. He
rightfully so earned MVP for the game, and we were all awestruck as the shower of confetti and
cheers told us that we did it: The new plan worked. It was just like my grandfather had told me,
and I guess I should have paid more attention to him: Don't worry if plan A fails, there are 25
more letters in the alphabet I guess it wasnt a joke, it was real advice.
