If any of the village of

Germantown voting tabulators break
down on election day, the village will
have a backup.
During the Jan. 4 Village Board
meeting, the board approved the purchase of a spare voting tabulator at a
cost of $6,840. During board discussion, Village Clerk Barbara K.D.
Goeckner said that new voting equipment was recently purchased, with
Washington County paying 80 percent for the cost of the machines at
the village's four polling locations.
For the spare, the village has to pay
the full cost. There will also be an
annual expense of $648 to maintain a
service agreement for the spare
machine.
"I'm not willing to take the risk,
nor do I think you would be, to be
without that that spare should one
of our district (machines) break
down," Goeckner said.

As we enter into 2016 we want to extend a huge Thank You to all of our
Loyal Customers who stuck with us during the hugely inconvenient road restructure of Pilgrim & Main Street. We know it has been a struggle entering and exiting the parking lot and were thankful that its finally done!
As always we will continue to seek out Made and Sourced in America products.
That not only means food but also toys and treats. We as Pet Parents ourselves
want the best products to ensure a long and healthy life for our pets as well as
yours. Many manufacturers are stepping up to the plate and improving the quality of their products that we as pet owners demand. The best advice we can give
everyone is to Read the Labels and ask questions. We dont have all the answers
but will try our best to find them for you.
May 2016 be a Healthy and Prosperous New Year for everyone.
Sincerely,

Doug, Lynn & the Entire Staff

Bud Walsh is retiring.

After 49 years in the jewelry business, it is time to turn the keys over to a new generation.
Bud has been active in the community for all these
years, and has come to know so many of you by name.
From class rings to engagement rings and so many milestones in local families, Bud has enjoyed the privilege of
being a part of so many of these events through the generations.
Shawn Walsh, Bud's eldest son has worked by his side
in the jewelry business, watching the trends and industry
change. During all that time their dedication to serving the
community has not changed. Whether helping a client
choose the right gift, or creating something entirely custom, Bud's commitment to value has never wavered. Bud
has been active in Rotary and has been recognized nationally as an Outstanding Young Man in Business.
"Although I have enjoyed these years working in a
career I love, it is time for me to take a step in a new direction. As I enter my fiftieth year in the jewelry business, It's
time for me to spend more time with my wife Mary Pat.
We look forward to doing some traveling and spending
more time with our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But don't be surprised to see me in the store from
time to time, because my heart is still in the business that
has been so much a part of me for all these years."
"In celebration of my retirement we will be offering
large discounts on all in-stock merchandise. We have
many beautiful pieces of jewelry on-hand for yourself or
that special someone in your life."

staff carries a possible sentence of a
$10,000 fine, six years in jail, or both.
During an appearance in court Jan.
4, Novak waived her right to a preliminary hearing. Defense attorney Michael
Hart entered a not guilty plea on behalf
of Novak. Bail had been set at $100,000
for Novak after she was charged Dec.
22. Hart requested that the bail be
reduced. He noted that Novak had not
engaged in any criminal conduct previously and had earned a master's degree.
"I don't, under any analysis, understand the $100,000. I believe that not
only to be excessive but grossly excessive," Hart said. "There was no argument or evidence presented at the time
of the initial appearance that Ms. Novak
was at risk for flight."
He added that Novak "has some
mental health issues that require treatment. While at a bare minimum she is
receiving (medication) at the county
jail, she is certainly is not receiving the
amount of care and treatment we as a
system, would hope people in her situation, would receive."
He said that a cash bail is appropriated and requested bail be reduced to
$10,000.

Assistant District Attorney Ted S.

Szczupakiewicz said "a substantial cash
bail is appropriate given the nature of
the charges and the number of
charges.
Szczupkiewicz added that during the
initial hearing there were statements
presented in which Novak said to officers she had thoughts of crashing her
car with her children in the vehicle. In
response, Hart noted one of the conditions included Novak not having unsupervised contact with her two children.
Court Commissioner Thomas Pieper
reduced the bail to a $10,000 cash bail
and a $25,000 signature bond.
Conditions that she not have contact
with the victim or students at
Menomonee Falls High School or unsupervised contact with anyone under age
18 remain in place.
Afterward, Hart said he hoped
Novak to make the bail "to get her the
help she needs. She's a sick woman,"
adding that his client had mental
health issues.
The next hearing on the matter will
be before Circuit Judge Ralph Ramirez
at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 22.

Washington County announces new appointments

Washington County announced the
appointment of a new human services
director and a new highway commissioner in statements issued Dec. 23.
Eric Diamond was selected as the
Washington County Director of Human
Services.
Diamond has held the post on a
interim basis since July, the county
stated. He started work for the county
as a behavioral health manager in April
2013 and was promoted to client services director a shore time later.
With approximately 130 employees,
over 100 community programs and a
2016 total budget over $21 million, the
Human Services Department is the
Countys largest department, managing
a wide variety of community programs
for individuals and families challenged
by disability, economic hardship and
safety concerns.
"Ensuring access to services that
provide for the communitys health and
physical well-being is a passion of
mine," Diamond said. "I am very much
looking forward to working side-by-side
with the dedicated team here in
Washington County and community
partners as a whole, towards the

Countys priorities in an innovative, fiscally responsible and collaborative way."

The department includes acute care
services crisis intervention team, the
children and families division, an economic support division and the behavioral health services division.
"I have been on the Human Services
Board since the day Eric started and
have been impressed with him from day
one," said Kristine Deiss, Human
Services Board Chairperson. "County
staff and the judiciary have had nothing but praise for him and I know the
department is in good hands. The
future looks bright for the department
and the department will continue to
provide services to those in need in
Washington County."
Diamond holds a Masters of Social
Work from the University of Montana, a

is a licensed clinical social worker in
Wisconsin. Prior to his work in

Scott M. Schmidt was appointed

highway commissioner. Schmidt held

the post on an interim basis since June.
"During his stint as interim,
Schmidt has hired five new employees,
filling the highway laborer positions
within the department. He has effectively demonstrated his ability to not
only fulfill the role of Highway
Commissioner but perform his duties in
a collaborative and innovative manner,"
County
Adminstrator
Joshua
Schoemann said. "We are extremely
excited to have him on our team and
are confident the move well positions
us to serve the community now and in
the future."
"This is an exciting time to join the
leadership team in Washington
County," said Scott Schmidt. "I am
very grateful for the opportunity, and
I especially want to thank the County
Board and Transportation Committee
for their support. I look forward to
continue serving the County, and
working with the highway department
staff."
The Highway Commissioner is
responsible for administering all maintenance and construction activities of
the Countys road and highway system,

public transit services and managing all

highway and transit staff. The department currently houses over 50 employees.
"Schmidt brings over 25 years of
experience with him to the role and a
vast array of knowledge that will be
critical to properly maintaining and
developing our transportation infrastructure," added County Adminstrator
Joshua Schoemann.
Schmidt is a licensed Professional
Engineer and Professional Land
Surveyor and holds a B.S. in Civil
Engineering with an emphasis in transportation and geotechnical engineering from UW Platteville. Prior to his
appointment
as
Highway
Commissioner, Schmidt served as the

2001. His duties during this time
included project management, design,
maintenance of the public land survey
system, bridge inspection, non-metallic mining reclamation, erosion control
and storm water management oversight. Schmidt is a Washington County
native and currently lives in
Germantown with his wife and two
children.

Unique ways to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Few people in American history have
had as strong an impact on the United
States as Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil
rights leader who was slain in 1968 at the
age of 39. Through his message of nonviolence and civil disobedience as a means
to advancing civil rights for all people,
King changed the lives of millions. Those
changes are still felt today, nearly half a
century after his death.
Though his death was tragic, King's
life remains something to celebrate, a fact
recognized by the federal government in
1983, when President Ronald Reagan
signed a bill creating a federal holiday to
honor King. Since 2000, all 50 states have
observed the holiday, which has been
observed on the third Monday of January
each year since 1992. For many, Martin

Luther King, Jr. Day is a time to reflect on

King's life and advance his message.
Children do not have school on Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day, making the holiday
an ideal time for parents to teach their
kids about King and his lasting legacy.
The following are a few unique ways
adults and children alike can celebrate
the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Give back to your community. A
community leader who made countless
sacrifices for both his own community
and the nationwide community of those
denied their civil rights, King is perhaps
best honored by those who make efforts
to give back to their communities. Parents
can take their youngsters to volunteer
and help the less fortunate, be it working
at a soup kitchen or an assisted living
facility. Many communities host outreach
events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and
adults and children can take advantage of
such events to honor King's legacy.
Read about the Civil Rights
Movement with your children. Thanks to
advancements in technology, men,
women and children now have a wealth of
information at their fingertips. This
makes it easy for parents to discuss the
Civil Rights Movement, and King's role in
that movement, with their children. The
older kids are, the more detailed parents
can be when explaining the struggles
King encountered. Even adults without
children are likely to be enlightened by

studying the Civil Rights Movement and

King's life in closer detail.
Listen to or read King's speeches.
Renowned for his abilities as an orator,
King gave numerous speeches throughout
his life, many of which are equally, if not
more, moving today than they were during his lifetime. While King's "I Have a
Dream" speech delivered in 1963 on the
steps of the Lincoln Memorial is widely
known, King gave many more speeches
throughout his lifetime. Such speeches
are an invaluable resource for those interested in learningaaabout the life of King

My name is Paris and I am a handsome little guy. I

was transferred from Fox Valley Humane Association
due to lack of space. I am originally from an
overcrowded shelter in Mississippi so I am a refined
southern gentleman. I am only 5-10 pounds at 2
months old and will stay pretty small even as an adult. I am good with and
respectful of cats. I would be good with dogs too but prefer smaller, gentle
ones because I am a perfect distinguished boy. I take treats gently and do
very well with food and other valuable resources and I am really tolerant of
all kinds of handling. My new home could have children of any age. I can be
a bit vocal and since I am just a pup I have some learning to do. I need to
practice walking on a leash and need to work on potty training. These things
Contact WCHS at 262-677-4388 or visit us should be a snap because I am very smart. I am really looking forward to

am sure to dazzle you with my exquisite nature and shower you with kisses.

Tip of the Week: Avoid antifreeze poisoning. Antifreeze is a deadly poison, but it has a sweet taste that may attract
animals and children. Wipe up spills and keep antifreeze (and all household chemicals) out of reach. Coolants and
antifreeze made with propylene glycol are less toxic to pets, wildlife and family. License Number #266935-DS
