The purpose of this unit is to allow you to develop the research skills you need to support
both theoretical and practical elements of your chosen specialism. You will be able to
select the most appropriate methods and techniques for undertaking detailed research.
You will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to identify suitable source
material and to apply the information in context. You will acquire the skills to distinguish
between primary and secondary sources, to evaluate the validity of such sources, and to
extract the necessary information from them. You will then be able to synthesise research
material into an appropriate form for presentation (see below).
An online music magazine are looking to hire a team of writers, researchers and
documentary makers. To apply for a role at the company, applicants must present
evidence that they have had experience with investigative journalism and present an
example of their work. They will demand that you show all sources of research so that
they can be happy with the credibility of your presentation.

You must devise a proposal for your chosen method of presentation and
submit this for approval. It must include a justification of your research
methods, and acknowledge an academic framework. Select a suitable
format that would not be out of place for an online magazine.

judgment of its potential effectiveness.
M2 Your proposal will demonstrate you intend to extract information from

A written proposal

After you have received approval for your proposal you must then
devise a structured plan for your research that highlights primary and
secondary sources, and the validity of research material sourced.
D2 Your structure must show a number of appropriate investigations that
are relevant to the topic you have chosen.
Present your findings in such a way that shows you can demonstrate
critical opinions, with evidence of acknowledgement of formula and
methodology. Present your findings using the agreed format.
M3 You will have presented your work with an appropriate structure that
clearly shows your findings.
D1 Your presentation must end with a thorough conclusion that not only
justifies your methodology but also evaluates your opinions.
