The Troy Housing Authority
has a job opening for a Childrens Program Aide for the
Martin Luther King Apartments Homework Club.
The aide will assist and supervise children attending a
daily educational enrichment
(school year) and nutritional/
recreational program
(summer).
The program requires creative and well-organized staff
who can function independently.
This non-benefited position
requires the successful completion of at least two years of
high school to be considered.
Only residents of the Troy
Housing Authority over 18
years old are eligible to apply.
Hours are within 2:30 p.m.
to 5:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri. during

hours weekly).
To apply, pick up an application from your sites office.
Deadline: Jan. 15

The snow took its time this year, but

its here now! Here are some reminders
for getting through the winter:
Please move your vehicle within 24
hours after snow. If your vehicle is
inoperable for some reason, please let
THA know and we can assist in moving
it.
Make sure your vehicle is registered. If it is

not registered, and we cannot identify

who it belongs to, it may be towed.
Remember to notify any overnight
guests to move their vehicles within 24
hours after snow as well.
Please also remember to blow out
candles this winter to prevent fires.

Troop leaders needed

THA needs volunteers to start Boy Scouts at family sites
THA is looking for volunteers to re-start its Boy Scouts
troop to provide educational,
healthy and fun activities for
boys who live at our family
sites.
There is currently a Girl
Scouts troop at Griswold
Heights, and in the past there
has been a Boy Scouts troop
but it is no longer active.
Troy Housing Authority is
working with Boy Scouts of
America Twin Rivers Council
to re-start the troop. THA
would also like to create Boy
Scout and Girl Scout troops at
our other public housing sites.
The current plan is to start a
Cub Scouts troop (Grades 1-5)
at Griswold Heights, which
would require at least two
adults. Leaders can be male or
female. Experience with scouting is ideal, but not necessary.
Leaders would receive training
and could receive a small compensation. While leaders would
preferably be part of the THA
community, this is not required.

To begin, meetings would be

held every other week. We are
hoping to find volunteers by
February and begin meeting in
March through May or June,
and then restart in September.
Boy Scouts of America aims
to help boys and young adults
build character, learn the responsibilities of participating
citizenship and develop personal fitness. They participate in

activities like pinewood derbies

and sometimes go camping or
for other outdoor trips.
Please spread the word if
you know someone who may
be interested in serving our
youth through this valuable
program. Any interested persons can call 273-3600 ext.
239 for more information.

This new year brings a fresh start for
the city in a number of ways. A new
mayor is taking office and a new city
council is sworn in this month and must
work together to make the city better.
At THA we should have our sights in
teamwork, too working with others to
improve our city, neighborhoods and
communities.
Within our sites, we can work together
to create, strengthen and support our tenant associations. While some sites have
active associations, others have dissipated
and could use a jump start.

If youre interested in learning more,

getting involved or starting a tenant association at your site, contact your sites
office. Our staff is looking forward to
helping these associations grow.
Outside our THA community, we
should look to work with others in our
neighborhoods and city to positively affect the places we live. Some of our sites
are located in neighborhood with neighborhood associations.
The city is home to dozens of neighborhood associations some cover large
areas of the city while others focus on a

Toys delivered to 300+ kids

Thanks to Toys for Tots and Rensselaer County, more than 300 children
who live in Troy Housing Authoritys

Action Council of Troy (REACT),
Troys city-wide public housing tenant
association.
Gifts included stuffed animals and dolls, Lego sets and Hotwheels cars, jewelrymaking kits and board games, and much more.
Toys for Tots distributed approximately 124,000 toys this year in the Capital Region and 114,000 last year. Rensselaer County also donated toys, using money
raised through a gift basket raffle.

couple of blocks. Some groups meet

monthly while others only meet when
problems arise or special events are
planned.
We encourage Public Housing and Section 8 residents to learn more about their
local neighborhood associations to better

your site, or ask your site manager for
