A teens Guide to Sex

and Sexuality
#grpa_rights |

Guyana Responsible
Parenthood Association

HOW much

do you

As a teenager, your body will experience physical

and emotional changes, leading you to discover
new interests and new fascinations in other
persons.
A major part of becoming the great person youre
growing to be is dening and understanding your
sexuality.

SO

you are

READY?

You might have figured out your

sexuality. But what about the

sex thing?

Your sexuality is the way you feel

towards others when it comes to attraction
and intimacy. Sexuality is not the same for
everyone, and it is important that you
understand the way you feel.

Many teens are not mentally and emotionally

ready for sexual activities. Before taking this step,
you must think, learn and plan for your sexual
encounter.

To understand your
sexuality, think about:

Having sex comes with a lot of responsibilities, and

only you know when youre ready for it.

Your body - Your anatomy

Gender - boy, girl, transgender
Gender identity - feelings and expressions

The question ultimately becomes,

everyone is doing it, so why not me?

Choosing to wait is okay. In fact, there are many

reasons for you to consider when deciding when
the TIME and PERSON are right for you.

of gender

Here are a few things to consider:

attraction towards other human beings

Sexual behaviours - including masturbation
and compelling sexual feelings
Values, attitudes and ideals - about love
and sexual relationships

Its your body. Its your decision. Its your right.

Sex can be fun and feel good, but when only
practiced safely with the other person.
Sex is only one part of a relationship. You should
be comfortable, secure and cared for.
Ask yourself: Is there mutual trust and respect in
your relationship?
Most importantly, do you know how to protect
yourself against unwanted pregnancy or
contracting an STI?

Sexual orientation - sexual or romantic

YOUR BODY
YOUR DECISION
YOUR RIGHT

Sex Readiness

What does this mean to YOU?

Sex Readiness means more than whether your
body is physically ready or able to have sex

If you are under 16 years and having sex, your

partner can be punished under the Laws of Guyana.
Deciding to have sex is a HUGE decision. If you
plan on having sex or are sexually active,
heres a couple of things to think about
Contraceptionlearn about how to
protect yourself physically and
emotionally, both against sexually
transmitted infections, viruses and
unwanted pregnancy
Condoms can be used as a birth control
method and protect you against contracting
most STIs
Get tested for Sexually Transmitted
Infections (STIs) some STIs can be
transmitted through kissing. Know the HIV
status of your partnergetting tested is key
to establishing trust, and staying healthy
Discuss safe sex options with your partner
and know their sexual history
Sex shouldnt hurt, talk to someone
If you are being forced to have sex or do
sexual acts or are being victimized, this is an
abuse that MUST be reported

Youre not alone! GRPA there are professionals with years of experience who can help you understand sex and
sexuality. Together, we can all make the best decisions for our health and the care of those around us.
