FOCUS: Academic essay
The elements of academic essay to be studied and/or practised:
1 INTRODUCTION including THESIS (MAIN ARGUMENT)
2 BODY OF THE TEXT including paragraph development
3 CONCLUSION and LANGUAGE FEATURES those related to grammar and textual
aspects
4 HOW TO QUOTE FROM RESOURCES (what plagiarism is and how to avoid it)

OUTLINE, CONTRACT
Resources: The STUDENTS have to actively explore the internet and libraries to obtain
knowledge on how to write an academic essay.
MEETING 1: outline, contract
MEETING 2: overview of academic essay and pre-test: the students have to write an
expository text. The field and topic are up to them. In the week of meeting 2 group 1
write an academic essay and a short writing on how to write an essay introduction
including thesis.
MEETING 3: discussion of some of the pre-test works by the students. Group 1 give the
soft files of their essay and short writing to the lecturer and the other groups on Sunday,
five days before the presentation meeting on Friday.
MEETING 4: PRESENTATION by group 1 on how to write an ESSAY
INTRODUCTION including THESIS and DISCUSSION of the academic essay by group
1 to be continued in meeting 5.
MEETING 5: discussion of the academic essay by group 1 (second discussion)
MEETING 6: WORK OUT OF CLASS: in the week of meeting 6, group 2 write an
academic essay and a short writing on how to write an essay body and how to develop
paragraphs. Group 2 give the soft files of their essay and short writing on how to write an
essay body and how to develop paragraphs to the lecturer and the other groups on
Sunday, five days before the presentation meeting on Friday.

MEETING 7: PRESENTATION by group 2 on how to write an essay body and how to


develop paragraphs AND discussion of the academic essay by group 2 to be continued
in meeting 8.
MEETING 8: discussion of the academic essay by group 2 (second discussion)
MEETING 9: MID-TEST: writing an essay in the classroom the students are informed
about the topic at the very time of the test.
MEETING 10: discussion of some of the students mid-test works. In the week of
meeting 10, group 3 give the soft files of their essay and short writing on how to write an
essay conclusion and the language features used in an expository text to the lecturer and
the other groups on Sunday, five days before the presentation meeting on Friday.
MEETING 11: presentation by group 3 on how to write an essay CONCLUSION and
THE LANGUAGE FEATURES used in an expository text AND discussion of the
academic essay by group 3 to be continued in meeting 12.
MEETING 12: discussion of the academic essay by group 3 (second discussion)
MEETING 13: WORK OUT OF CLASS: in the week of meeting 13, group 4 write an
academic essay and a short writing on HOW TO QUOTE FROM RESOURCES (what
plagiarism is and how to avoid it). Group 4 give the soft files of their essay and short
writing to the lecturer and the other groups on Sunday, five days before the presentation
meeting on Friday.
MEETING 14: presentation by group 4 on HOW TO QUOTE FROM RESOURCES
(what plagiarism is and how to avoid it) AND discussion of the academic essay by group
4 to be continued in meeting 15.
MEETING 15: discussion of the academic essay by group 4 (second discussion)
MEETING 16: FINAL-TEST: the students submit an academic essay (number of words
1,500 words)
WHAT THE STUDENTS (the presenting and non-presenting groups) HAVE TO
DO regarding the writing of their academic essay and short essay on the elements of
academic essay:
1 The number of words of the academic essay for presentation is 1,500-2,000.
2 The students have to make their essay on the elements of academic essay relatively short.
3 After receiving the soft files of the academic essay and the short writing on the elements of
academic essay, the non-presenting students have to study them, so that during the presentation,
they will be able to provide constructive comments and criticisms.

4 After giving the soft files to the lecturer and the other groups, the presenting group may use the
time to prepare for the presentation.
5 The first 40 minutes of the meeting is used for the presentation of the short writing on the
elements of an academic essay and the academic essay written by the presenting group . The rest

of the time, about 60 minutes, is used for questions and answers.


6 It should be remembered that, for the mid test, the students are asked to write an
academic essay in the classroom. The number of words is 700-800. No dictionary. No
internet.
7 For the final test, the students have to write an academic essay at home. The number of
words is 1,500.
RESOURCES:
There are so many resources on the internet on how to write an academic essay. The
students can find some of these resources by themselves, learn how to write an academic
writing, and apply what they have learnt in writing an academic essay. The students can
also explore UNS libraries to get books on academic essay. The lecturer will give the
students some notes on academic essay during the presentations and via email.

SCORING:
Group academic essay: 25%
Short essay on the elements of academic writing and presentation: 25%
Mid test: 25%
Final test: 25%
