The business is driven by focus on product innovation. Firemist Velvet Pearl EH 921 from
BASF is a new variety of pigment that creates a variety of unique, high value finishes. It can be
used with transparent absorption pigment to get desired effects ranging from gently sparking
matt finish to realistically patinated silver or copper.

Focus on emerging markets


In order to tap additional market opportunities in emerging economies, BASF is entering into
such markets. Recently, BASF inaugurated its new dispersions plant in Daya Bay Petrochemical

7.1.5 RECENT DEVELOPMENT S


February 2012, BASF SE announced phasing out of lead chromate pigment by the end of 2014
and focus on marketing and production of alternative products. Reason for this strategic move is
that REACH will not permit to put into circulation, lead chromate pigment from May 2015 due to
environmental concerns.

December 2012, BASF has appointed Paul Whittleston as Vice President for Automotive
Refinish Coatings in North America. He will be based in Southfield, MI and will take over the
office with effect from January 1, 2013.

November 2012, BASF inaugurated its new dispersions plant in Daya Bay Petrochemical
Industrial Park in Huizhou, China. This new plant is meant to produce styrene acrylic (SA)
dispersions and styrene butadiene (XSB) dispersions. XSB dispersions are chiefly used as
coating binders for paper whereas SA dispersion is used in paints & coatings, construction
materials, printing and packaging and adhesives.
