Course Prerequisite: None. Note that students with High School Spanish 12 (or equivalent proficient level) will
not normally be permitted to take SPAN 102 for credit.
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES:
SPAN 102 is the first half of first year Spanish. The emphasis is on developing conversation and comprehension
skills as well as understanding how Spanish grammar works. You should expect to spend roughly 79 hours per
week in class preparation and language lab activities. By the end of the semester, you will have acquired basic
conversational skills and an elementary reading facility.

This course has no Final Exam. Except for emergencies excusable absences should be cleared with the
instructor ahead of time. It will be at the discretion of the instructor to accept or decline. If approved the student
must write the test/quiz or submit the assignment within 2 days after the original schedule exam date or
assignment and no later, otherwise a grade of zero will be assigned.

EXPLANATORY NOTES ON ASSIGNMENTS:


Participation and attendance: -------------- 10%
This is based on: (a) attending all sessions fully prepared, and (b) on the students ability to respect and
collaborate creatively with the instructor and classmates to facilitate the group learning process in the acquisition
of the language.
Homework------------------------------------- 10%
Students will be required to do all assigned online activities in MySpanishLab on the specific due dates. All
activities can be repeated as many times as necessary. Late submission will affect students acquisition process
and as consequence grades.
Quizzes ---------------------------------------- 12%
There will be 6 quizzes (10-15 minutes each) based and not limited to each of the 6 course lessons. No dictionary
or other material or electronic devices will be permitted during the quizzes.
Exams ----------------------------------------- 45%
There will be 3 exams that will be taken in a computer lab. Each exam consists of two parts: Part-A y Part-B. The
first one includes listening, reading comprehension and grammar. Once it is submitted you will be able to open
part B that is a writing activity.
Writing----------------------------------------- 6%
Students will write a total of 6 small compositions. The drafts are going to be done in class, and receive a feedback.
The draft has to be attached to the final submission: printed at 12 points font-size, double space including the
word count. A grade of zero will be assigned to writings that do not follow these instructions.
Oral exams (2) -------------------------------- 17%
Students will be required to participate in two oral exams to assess their communicative competence in the
language. The first follows an interview format with the instructor. The second, an oral presentation will be done in
groups of 3 or 4. The format may be a role-play or skit presented in front of your instructor and classmates.
Instructions for the oral exam with the instructor
This oral exam is about 5 minutes long, each student goes in alone. The exam starts with a short presentation,
then questions, maybe pictures. It includes lessons 7-11.
Prepare without help, about 10-15 sentences on ONE of these topics. You are not allowed to read this part and
you can use up to 2 minutes. Use grammar structures and vocabulary from this semester.
a) Una persona que admiras (Por qu la admiras? Cmo es? Qu hace?...etc.)
b) Tu familia (Quines son? Qu hacen? Cmso se organizan para dar una fiesta?...etc.)
c) Planea un viaje con tus amigos (Dnde van a ir? Qu van a hacer? Cundo? Por qu?...etc.)
Then you will be asked questions similar to the ones in the text. You do not need to memorize the content of the
dialogues or the readings.

Instructions for group oral exam
This oral exam is 10- 20 minutes long.
Prepare without help a script. You are not allowed to read but can use pictures or visuals to remember.

Grammar complexity and accuracy: 25%
Vocabulary: 10%
Pronunciation and intonation: 15%
Creativity: 25%
The 50% of the final grade is for group performance and the other 50% on the individual one.
The topics should be based from the 6 chapters studied in class, that are not to be repeated. As soon as the group
decides the chapter should immediately report to the instructor to see its availability.

GRADING:
Marks for assignment tests and exams are giving and percentages, to which letter grades are also assigned. The
percentage mark resulting from the entire term work and examination then produces the final letter grade for the
course.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES:

Students have to attend all classes fully prepared.

In case of potentially excusable absences due to illness or something beyond the control, students are to
notify the instructor by email within 2 calendar days and provide the reasons of the absences and expected
return day. The instructor may require formal written documentation. Doctors note should state limitations
caused by sickness.

Students may have an excusable absence without a doctor note only in case of contagious cold or flu, and
when an evaluation is not scheduled. They are to write an email to the instructor immediately.

Late assignments: under NO circumstances will homework assignments, quizzes, writings, exams and
presentation be made up unless special arrangements have been made with the instructor prior to the
due date or exam date.

Students are to keep their phones and other devices off. Their participation points will be lost if they
are detected to be using them. For new words, regular or students dictionaries are welcomed.

Class cancellations: If the university cancels classes you need to continue reading the text and doing all
activities.

Integrity: All students are encouraged to review university policies pertaining to academic integrity available

Students should be aware that while seeking the advice of native or expert speaker is often helpful,
excessively editorial and creative help in assignment is considered a form of cheating

Consultation with instructors
Students are encouraged to consult with their instructors regarding any concern they have about the course
content, the structure of the course, or their personal progress. Please note that students are responsible for any
notes or material from any class missed. Do not contact the course instructor in this regard.
Use of Spanish
This is a Spanish course, therefore it will be taught in Spanish. However, this is a beginner course the instructor
may use English for instructions and if it is deemed pedagogically appropriate. Furthermore, to benefit from this
course and to acquire a greater understanding of the language students are expected to speak Spanish as much as
possible in class.
