Self-manifest and ensconced in the valley between the twin rivers
Kaveri and Kollidam (Coleroon), it is said that the Lord here is
self-manifest, choosing to reside amidst the terpsichorean dwellings
of Sri Mahalakshmi. Srirangam is considered the foremost among the
108 vaishnava holy sites, having been venerated by the verses of all
the Azhwars. It is said that the present deity was worshipped by the
kings of Ikshvaku Dynasty, including Lord Rama himself.

Formerly an ancient Chola Capital known as Nishulapuri, this shrine
was erected by Nanda Chola commemorating the divine nuptials of
Azhagiya Manavalan, Lord of Srirangam and Kamalavalli Nachiyar. She
was born as a mystical maiden within a thousand petaled lotus, which
grew in a tank that is still preserved within this temple complex.
This place also borrows its name from a fight between a cock and an
elephant. This is also the birthplace of Tiruppanazhwar.

Purushottama, the highest being gave his divine vision to Brahma in
the form of a Kadamba Tree. This holy site was also the hermitage of
Sage Kadamba. The skull of Lord Brahma, that was stuck to the palm
of Lord Shiva fell off after receiving alms from Annapurnavalli
Thayar here. It is the only holy place where the trinity of Vishnu,
Brahma and Shiva bless devotees along with their consorts - Lakshmi,
Saraswati and Parvathi respectively.

Located atop a white, obsidian hillock, this holy place holds
Sridevi in the highest esteem. Once upon a time, King Sibi and his
army were camped in this very place and were disrupted by a white
boar, which disappeared into a mound. Upon the instruction of Sage
Markandeya, who was undertaking a penance nearby, King Sibi offered
a libation of milk, after which Pundarikaksha Perumal bestowed his
vision to the King, Sage and his army.

This temple is located amidst the lush green groves on the banks of
the Kollidam river. Sage Manduka, was once cursed to become a frog
by Sage Durvasa. Manduka was liberated when he lived in this temple
pond and meditated upon Sriman Narayana. The Lord here is present as
Aniruddha, the one who sustains. It is also said that Brahma was
blessed by this Lord. Annually, Lord Sundararajan visits Kollidam,
across the banks from Srirangam.

There lived a King named Upamanyu, who was in the habit of laying a
feast every Dwadasi. An old man once approached him and asked for
food. Having consumed the food meant for all the people, yet his
hunger insatiate, he asked for a pot of Appam. He then bestowed
His vision upon the King and his subjects. To this day, the Lord is
being offered appams which we can partake along with His
blessings.

Kandiyur takes its name from the fact that the curse of Neelakandan,
of the blue-hued pharyngal aposematism, was completely lifted here.
Shiva is known to have meditated on Lord Vishnu after the kapala was
sundered from his hand. One other unique aspect of this holy place
is the pentad of Kamala - Kamalanathan Perumal, Kamalavalli Thayar,
Kamalakruthi Vimana, Kamala Teertham and Kamala Pushkarani, which
inspires a divine connection with the divine Lotus flower.

This holy place is said to have been the divine epicentre of Sri
Varahas entrance to save the world from the clutches of
Hiranyaksha. This holy place also boasts of historic ties with King
Ambarisha who rendered many services to the Lord here. It is
recorded that Queen Mangammal helped renovate the temple complex in
the wake of floods. The temple also has a shrine for Anjaneya who
strikes a dancing posture, inviting devotees to practice Bhakti.

Located amidst the green groves abounding the banks of Cauvery, this
temple is a true testament to the fact that the Lord always does the
bidding of his devotees. Here, the Lord is said to have enacted the

Gajendra Moksha, upon the request of Hanuman. He blessed one true


devotee with the vision of how he rescues another true devotee.
Historic accounts record King Indradhyumna being blessed with the
divine vision of the Lord here.

A Sage undertook severe penances in this holy site to witness the
Lord. When the Lord appeared, he requested to be blessed with the
vision of Jatayu Moksha. During the abduction of Sita, Jatayu, the
avian friend of Dasharatha, fought valiantly with Ravana and was
severely wounded. Sri Rama and Lakshmana met him and he passed away
in the arms of Sri Rama, who performed the last rites for Jatayu and
conferred salvation upon him.

The magnanimous Lord, who confers untold blessings on us all,
measures and records his blessings with a palm-leaf and stylus in
his left hand and a measuring cup near his right. It is also said
that Kamadhenu undertook many penances here that lofted her to an
exalted position among the celestials. Indra and Agni also undertook
penances at this place, seeking the forgiveness of the Lord and his
consort at various times in history.

To experience what a drop of nectar looks and feels like, one must
visit the Lord at Kumbakonam, who seems forever ready to receive his
devotees. The Lord is said to have manifested from a drop of nectar
preserved by Brahma before creation. The chariot shaped sanctum is
an offering of the Sun God. This Lord is credited with discovering
the poetry of the Azhwars, after they were lost briefly to the
ravages of time.

The Lord Oppiliappan, the one with no peer, made a sacrifice for
Bhudevi, who lived here. He took the guise of a venerable and old
man and requested her father Sage Markandeya for her hand in
marriage in this very place. This was met with disapproval from the
Sage, since the old man seemed to have refined tastes. The Lord
vowed to give up anything to assuage the Sage and renounced the use
of salt.

The mention of Thirunaraiyur immediately evokes memories of the KalGarudan who is famous here. It was in this holy-place that Neela
Devi took birth under a vanjula tree, earning the name
Vanjulavalli. She was brought up by Sage Medhavi. The Lord requested
for her hand in marriage and gave her a prominent position in this
shrine. The Lord and his consort here shared a remarkable
relationship with Thirumangai Azhwar and performed his
Panchasamskaram.

The earthen pot that held the seeds of creation were said to have
been made from clay collected here. Once upon a time, seven holy
rivers observed a penance in the foothills of the Vindhya Mountains.
A small discord broke out about who was the most superior among
them. Ganga approached Brahma and established her supremacy. Kaveri
observed severe austerities here and the Lord blessed her to become
the most superior among all the rivers.

The Lord who displays genuine compassion towards his devotees gives
his divine vision at this holy-place. The divine wedding of the Lord
is said to have happened here after the Churning of the Ocean and
the emergence of Mahalakshmi. The whole ensemble of Devas were said
to have been in attendance as bees, for the shy bride. Thirumangai
Azhwar records praise of the Lord, who wanted to learn the meanings
of his mystic poems.

The Lord known for his divine hairdressing, demonstrates willing to
aid his devotees time and again. He descended to aid the sages who
were mistaken for foliage and cut asunder by the armies of King
Uparicharavasu. He rescued a priest from punishment and showed how
much he coveted the delicious prasadam of another devotee. To this
day he traipses upon Vibhishanas request. He also stormed arrows in
defence, upon the insistence of the Temple Araiyar.
Sage Vasishta is known to have worshipped a Krishna made entirely of
butter.

The Lord appeared as a small boy, was chased and bound by the sages
of Vasishtas hermitage upon whom he conferred his divine vision.
This holy-place is characterised by four very unique curiosities Unresolved disputes, wells with absent aquifers, the Tamarind tree
that does not enfold and the barren Medler Tree, all of which
happened when Thirumangai Azhwar visited this shrine.

In the four yugas, this Lord is worshipped by Adisesha (Krita),
Bhumidevi (Treta), Markan (Dwapara) and Salisukha (Kali). The Lord
here displays mesmerising beauty and is praised for his culture and
civility. Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Dhruva who
undertook rigorous penance for the Lord to appear and bless him. He
requested the Lord to reside in this temple forever so that all
devotees can enjoy his beauty.

Three demons named Thanjakan, Gajamukhan and Dandakan tormented Sage
Parasara and disrupted his austerities. The Lord appeared in three
forms, as Vishnu mounted atop his Garuda Vahana, as Narasimha and as
Varaha to route these demons. Upon his deathbed, the demon asked
this place to be named after him and hence the name Thanjavur. Three
shrines were established to commemorate these forms of the Lord. The
river Vennar, originally (Vinnar - river from heaven) flows nearby.

Located amidst a forest of lush Magnolia flowers, this holy place
was the site where Sri Mahalakshmi underwent rigorous penance and
wed the Lord. Once upon a time, Nandi, the mount of Shiva, travelled
to the abode of Lord Vishnu. He was denied entry by the Dwarapalakas
(gatekeepers). When he tried to force himself, he was cursed. Nandi
returned dejected and undertook onerous austerities here. The Lord
blessed Nandi and relieved him of his curse.

An agrarian community with an argentate connection, everything here
has something to do with silver, starting with the very name of the
hamlet (velli = silver). Shukracharya (shukra = silver), the royal
preceptor of the Asuras is said to have prayed to Lord here and got
his vision restored after he lost them to the Lord during the Vamana
avatara. Mayan and Vishwakarma prayed to the Lord here and were
blessed with a vision of the Lord.

The birthplace of Poet Kamban, this land is famed as where the
Dravidian ditty and the Sanskrit strain, braid in a mystic musical
beauty. The King Uparachiravasu, whose chariot was always airborne
by his steadfast justice, slipped in his judgement once and his
chariot fell down here. Upon Prahladas pleas the Lord blessed him
vith a tranquil form under a vimana offered by Garuda. The Lord also
blesses in the form of a celestial cowherd.

Like a small pearl that radiates within an ocean, this Lord reclines
in a small form within the ocean of His mercy. Sage Vyaghrapada, the
one with the feet of a tiger, was a devotee of Shiva. After having
many boons appeased by Shiva, he asked him for the boon of Moksha
(liberation). Shiva brought him to Sirupuliyur, pointed at the feet
of this Lord and said that this is the only means to liberation.

Seething like the Sun and soothing as the Moon, the Lord always
comes to the rescue of his devotees. Chandra, the Moon-God, married
the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati. Daksha was angered at Chandra
for being partial to one of his daughters and cursed that he be
blemished and lose his lustre. Chandra performed penance on the Lord
here and the curse was modified to become the waxing and waning
phases we see today.

In the midst of a fragrant forest, the Lord reclines, like a mighty

mountain, with his arms holding his Discus and Conch aloft. He
instills fear in his enemies and assures protection to his devotees
even when he appears to be relaxed and reclining. Brahma, once lost
the Vedas to Madhu and Kaitapa who hid the Vedas far away. Brahma
came and prayed to this Lord to help rout the Demons and restore the
Vedas.

This town boasts of a connection with Lord Rama killing the demoness
Tadaka. This place has been known by several names such as Patalika
Forest, Uttama Kshetra and Siddhashrama. Sage Romasa and Brahma had
an argument from Brahmas inflated ego about his longevity.
Tirumangai Azhwar and Sambandhar met here and composed poetry to
establish their supremacy and it is recorded that Sambandhar
accepted defeat after hearing the spontaneity and divinity in the
compositions of Azhwar.

After the battle with Narakasura, Krishna, the King of Dwaraka and
Sathyabama were retuning when they laid their eyes on a Coral
Jasmine Tree in Indras celestial gardens. Indra denied Sathyabamas
request to carry one of these trees with her. This angered Krishna
and he burned Indras celestial garden to ashes. They then returned
to this place, where the Lord created a garden for Sathyabama and
filled it with shrubs that blossomed with coral jasmine.

One may come across many sites where the Lord has done the bidding
of his devotees, but none as fulfilling as this one. Sage Udanka
performed penances here and when the Lord appeared before him, asked
to be blessed with the Vishwaroopam. He then asked the Lord to show
him a form which the Gopikas enjoyed and the Lord danced for the
Sage balancing pots on his head, playing a drum tied to his waist.

Sage Vyaghrapada is known to have setup his hermitage here and
performed various penances. He was also known for devotional service
rendered to the Lord. Once upon a time, when he was away his child
Upamanyu began to cry of hunger. Moved by the tears of the little
child, Sri Mahalakshmi urged the Lord to feed the child and they
brought milk from the Ocean of Milk in which the Lord resided and
pacified him.

To ward off the imprecation that came with killing Ravana, Lord Rama
was asked to be seated within a cow made of gold and emerge from it.
Vindicated of the evils, Sri Rama gave away the golden cow and an
additional 1000 measures of gold in charity to Sage Dhrudanetra,
whose hermitage was located here. The Sage and Sri Rama built a
temple for the Lord and performed the installation rituals for the
present deity.

The Lord here is said to have descended from Badrikashrama. The Lord
came to bless the foremost of the eleven Rudras who undertook a
penance to have the vision of the Lord. Indra and his mount
Airavata, are said to have meditated upon the Lord here and been
blessed. Tirukkoshtiyur Nambi, who was one of Sri Ramanujas
acharyas is said to have been instructed in the Tirumantra here and
passed it to Sri Ramanuja later.

There once lived a King named Shwethaketu, who felt hungry and
thirsty upon reaching Vaikuntham. He met Narada, who told him that
he should perform many charities and meditate on the Lord from this
holy place. The King did as he
was told and was blessed with the vision of the Lord as in
Vaikuntham. Ever since, the Lord here awaits the devotees and
bestows the same vision that he does when we reach Vaikuntham.

Surrounded by five Narasimha temples, Tiruvali borrows its name from
the embracing of Sri Mahalakshmi by the Lord Narasimha after killing
the demon Hiranyakasipu. Purna Maharishi lived in the same town and
begot a beautiful daughter, who was in incarnation of Sri
Mahalakshmi herself. Lord Devaraja from the neighbouring Tirunagari,
arrived and took her hand in holy matrimony. A visit here is
incomplete without having partaken of the sight of Tirumangai Azhwar
and Kumudavalli Nachiyar.

Located on the southern bank of River Maniaaru, this is the holy
site where the Lord Sriman Narayana and Sri Mahalakshmi, who was
born from the churning of the Milky Ocean, espoused each other. The
Devas who were in attendance, gathered around the divine couple to
celebrate this celestial union. They surrounded the Lord and his
lady love like a male peacock spreading his plume, which is where
this holy place derives its name from.
