ITL Assignment 7

By Group 10: Section A (Roll Nos 14A, 27A, 32A, 38A, 45A, 53A)

In recent decades the environmental effects of transportation has become a topic of increasing
importance around the world. Transport has significant detrimental effects on the built and
natural environment, and hence on individuals lives. It also contributes significantly to
global warming. On both these counts, transport will be unsustainable in the medium to long
term without mitigation measures. The environmental aspects of transport sustainability are
concerned with atmospheric and noise pollution, land take, resource use, the effects of waste
disposal on the natural environment, and the effects of the above on humans, flora and fauna.
These environmental aspects of transport cover the full life-cycle of transport. The largest
impacts come from transport use, but the effects from development and construction of
infrastructure and vehicles, as well as the waste from their disposal, add to the environmental
costs of transport. Considering all these Short Sea Shipping is the most viable and
preferred mode of commercial transport.
The main reasons why Short Sea Shipping is the most environment friendly transport
mode are

The least polluting transport mode per tonne km

A long term alternative to congested road transport
The most cost-effective transport mode per tonne km
Measures to Reduce the Environmental Impact on Transport Logistics
Rethinking logistics - the planning and implementation of moving goods and
supplying services - can help reduce environmental impact
If the business transports either its own or another organisation's freight, improving its
systems may benefit the business and reduce your impact on the environment
For example, if the business is making and receiving deliveries to and from a
warehouse, it might make sense to have one central distribution centre. This could
be cost-effective and has less environmental impact than a dispersed distribution
system
Moving freight by rail or water instead of by road can help reduce the
environmental impact of logistics. However, switching freight to rail or water may
require capital expenditure on new facilities for handling equipment, or new
connections to the rail and waterway networks
Fuel accounts for at least 30 per cent of operating costs of most road freight transport
operations, so fuel management practices should be improved
The Freight Best Practice programme has developed a number of free tools and
products to help businesses improve operational efficiency and reduce fuel
consumption of road freight
