In design, dimensions and performance, these transformers conform to
National and International standards.
2.0 DESCRIPTION
Annexure-1 shows the various parts of a Current Transformers type IT-400
The Primary winding (5) is of hairpin design with capacitance graded high voltage
insulation (6). Primary currents of more than one value are obtained by providing
either primary reconnection or secondary tappings as the case may be.
The core is made of high grade electrical steel through which the required number of
secondary turns are wound torroidally. This assembly (8) is located over one leg of
the hairpin primary. The active part is located inside steel housing called adaptor
cylinder (9) which is of welded sheet steel construction.
A High voltage porcelain insulator (7) serves as the external insulation.
The active part of the transformer is fixed rigidly to the base (10) which is of welded
steel construction. A weather proof sheet steel box (11) is provided for secondary
terminals.
A rating plates and a schematic plate are located outside and inside the bolted door
of the terminal box respectively.
The transformer head comprises of a collar (2) and a dome (1). The primary
terminals (3) are fitted on to the collar. One oil sight glass (4) is also provided in this
collar and one Nitrogen filling valve in the dome. The dome is of sheet steel
construction and is filled with Nitrogen gas which acts as a cushion for expansion and
contraction of oil.

2.1 SEALING SYSTEM

The transformer is hermetically sealed to eliminate moisture absorption and oil
contamination. The Nitrogen gas cushion provided inside the dome permits

CAUTION
Current Transformer porcelains are fragile and are susceptible to breakage.
Avoid jerks during handling. The crates should never be dropped.

6.0 UNLOADING, INSPECTION & STORAGE

6.1 Depending upon the type of handling equipment available opening of the
packing crate should be limited to the topside.
6.2 Special care must be exercised when unpacking the transformers.
Remove the crate only with a nail puller and never break open the parts of
the packing with a wrecking bar.
6.3 Carefully inspect all the gasketed flanges and ensure that there is no oil
Leakage.
6.4 Now open all sides of the packing case with care so that no damage is
done to the Current Transformer.
6.5 Lift the CT off the floor of the packing case and bring it to upright
position.
6.6 Store CT vertically on hard, dry even surfaces.
6.7 The Current Transformers are despatched with the secondaries short
Circuited. Store the Current Transformers taking care that the short
circuiting links at the terminals are not disturbed.
7.0 INSTALLATION
Cranes are necessary for handling which is the Current Transformers.
Before attempting to lift the equipment its weight indicated on the nameplate
should be noted in order that the lifting eye means will be of ample capacity.
Always lift the transformer using the four lifting eye provided. Care should
be taken to see that the slings do not touch the porcelain or make a loop
around the insulator under any circumstance, as any strain on these parts
may cause the porcelain crack or break. For this purpose four legged rope
slings with PVC sleeving of suitable length and cross section is
recommended. The sling should obviously have the adequate capacity to lift
the weight of the complete transformer.

9.0 MAINTENANCE
9.1 The transformers are shipped completely assembled and filled with oil to
the proper level. The periodic inspection of proper oil level is made easy by a
built in oil sight glass located in the collar. Proper oil level is ascertained by
the appearance of the red colour of the oil, in the oil sight glass.
9.2 The transformers are hermetically sealed from the outer atmosphere and
ready
for
immediate
use
when
installed.
Due
to
hermetic
sealing, contamination and ageing of oil inside the transformer is not
expected for a long period of service and hence no special attention is
required in practice.

10. COMMISSIONING Tests

Following tests are recommended as part of pre commissioning checks.
A)

Primary ratio tests inject primary current and measure secondary current across
each core/ winding. Ensure cables connected to the primary winding is not
grounded during this tests

B)

Resistance, Magnetizing current, Knee point voltage tests for class PS, Class X
cores / windings

C)

Insulation resistance test between cores, cores to ground and Primary to ground

D)

Continuity tests for cores/ secondary winding

E)

Tan delta & capacitance tests. Test results should be nearly / approximately
matching factory test results. Large variations between site & factory
measurements if found during tests should be notified to Alstom.

F)

Make sure that no secondary winding is open circuited.

G)

It is always advised that pre-commissioning tests to be done in less than 1

month before commissioning the C.T

Note: Never keep CT under operation /charge the CTs with oil leakage.
Leaking C.Ts potentially can fail any time.

10.1 Tangent Delta / Capacitance Measurement

A Bushing if provided or C -terminal can be used for measurement of Tan delta /
capacitance of the Current Transformer.
The Bushing or C-terminal is always grounded / earthed during operation. This is
done by means of an Earthing link which is connected between the Bushing and the
base plate.
When Tan delta / capacitance test is to be performed please disconnect the cable at
the end which is connected to the base plate. This end of the cable is to be connected
to the Tan delta/ Capacitance Bridge for measurement.
Attention: After the test is completed it is necessary to connect the cable back to the

10.2 General Guidelines on oil sampling

Following are the general guidelines for oil sampling

Oil sampling must be performed when ambient temperature > +5 deg C

As far as possible oil sample should not be taken during rainstorm, thunderstorm
and when humidity is very high > 90%

Ensure that the sampling valve area is thoroughly cleaned and should be free
from dust and other foreign particles

The tool used for sampling also has to be clean free from dust & other foreign
particles

The CT must be de energized for oil sampling. Sample should be taken minimum
6 hours after de - energization. This is required to prevent depressurisation effect
if oil is sampled just after switch off.

Valve provided in CT s is of non return type

Maximum 1 liter (per transformer) of oil is available for sampling. Do not drain
more oil than quantity stipulated above.

Recommended qty for oil sampling is approximately 50ml

The transformer requires no oil maintenance. Thus, oil sampling is recommended

only after CT is subjected to unusual faults resulting in high electrical or thermal
stress.

11. INSTRUCTION FOR MAKING 400 kV C.T VERTICAL

PRECAUTIONS:
1. The packed CT should be opened only on a leveled and hard surface, preferably a
prepared surface.
2. One or more nylon ropes (manila ropes) of adequate capacity should be used.
3. While making the CT vertical, It should be seen that the CT always rests on the
wooden base.
4. Remove sling guides before energizing the current transformer.
INSTRUCTION:
1.Tie the slings over the CT and firmly hold it in place by tying a rope around the
slings at the top portion of the dome.
2. Place a wooden runner at the gap between the wooden base and ground at the
extreme end of wooden base just below the CT base ends, so that when the CT is
made vertical it rests both on the base and runner.
3. Tie a manila rope of adequate capability around the neck portion of the CT just
below the end casting and connect it to the hook of the crane.
4. Lift the CT and care should be taken that while lifting, the manila rope is always in a
vertical position with respect to the ground. This can be achieved by simultaneously
moving the crane boom in the direction in which the CT is being lifted.

5. When the CT is in the vertical position remove the manila rope from the crane
hook and lift the CT by placing the crane hook in the loop of the slings at the top
of the dome and shift the CT to the desired location.
