Area Lighting
Since the advent of lower wattage medium

base HID amps a half century ago, specifiers have strugg ed with how to best use
these sources in "pedestrian scale" lghting.
Uncontrol ed aperture brightness is often

tolerated at 40 and 50 foot mountlng heights

because

the uminaires are often perceived

A new concept in high performance tiered

reflector systems concealed in this classic,
elegant form.

to be above normal viewing angles. However, at 10 16 feet this high angle glare not
only creates significant visual discomfort,
but potentlal safety hazards as well.

Pedestrian ContraCline

Distributing Bellector

A new concept in tiered reflector systems

directs light out in the 60'-78" range.

provides the necessary luminous

intensity for wide pole spacings and

unilorm distributions, bui cuts off the light

sharply at 80" (as measured to 10% of maximum candela), ensuring control of glare

and lighl trespass. ln fact, unlike most

retracto' and vertical amp filtures.
the Pedestrian ContraCline meets the IES

cutoll classification for roadway

luminaires. Avaiiable in both

a Type

V (sym-

rnetric) distribution for area lighting and a

Type

(asymmetric) distribution for road-

way and pathway lighting, the Pedestrlan

Contra0line is the practical choice for lower

mounting height appllcations.

Prismatic Lens/Retlector
is designed and positioned to reflect and
transmit light emanating from the boltom
seclion of the lamp. Approximalely twothirds of these lumens are rellecled out in
the 67'-75'range. The remaining light is
transmitled down and out through the lens,
ensuring that the lower portion of the enclosure glows evenly.

Time Honored Daytime Form

Top Rellector
is spun from perforated specular Alzako to direct
llght out in the 65'-72' range. The perforations
and top opening in the reflector provide an up
light component, resulting in subtle luminance
on the upper section of the globe.
Parabolic FIuted Reflector
directs light out at 70'. The "fluting" serves to
increase arc imaging (thus performance) and
ensures that light is not redirected back through
the arc tube (which can cause voltage rise in
HPS lamps, resulting in shortened lamp life).

Shielding Reflector
directs light in the 34n56' range. This reJlector
also features a lower ledge which serves
to cut off light sharply at 80' and provide till-in
illumination near the pole in the 7'-30" range.

ContraCline Optical System

State-of the-art performance doesn't
have to rnean trendy appearance. The

Contracline optical system is concealed

within the classic acorn housing. This
timeless design is widely used both to
create a distinctive "per od" setting as weil
as to comp ement even the most contemporary architecture.

The Washington
ContraCline Family
With the original Washington ContraCl ne,
l\4oldcast created the opportunity to provide
high quality area lighting from the traditional
"acorn" form. This high performance

luminaire, using HID lamps to 400 watts,

generates ihe high light levels public
spaces now require. The new Pedestrian
ContraCline extends ihat concept for small
area, roadway, and pathway illumination.
This product line, using medium base lamps

to 175 watts, offers the superb performance

and excellent brlghtness control of its big
brother from a more compact (and

moderately priced) housing.
