July 2015
Dear Sabre Parents and Players:
Welcome to the 44th season of Sabre Hockey. Were looking forward to another successful year, and I thank you in advance
for your support of Sabre Hockey. Once again, registration is online. Registration instructions and general information are
included in this packet.
We had a great year last season; the success many of our teams had was fantastic. We had two teams attend USA Hockey
National Championships, Girls 19U and Midget 18U, with several others making deep runs into the playoffs at both house
and travel.
Along with a thriving mite house program, a deep travel program at the Squirt thru Bantam levels, the Sabres provide what
I describe as World Class Midget and Girls program as evidenced by the years of State and National success at those
levels. Something both our young boys and girls can aspire to as they travel thru the Sabre organization!
One of our goals at the Club is to get the skaters on the ice as much as possible and keep the cost down for our families.
Our rink contracts are secure for several years and despite upwards of a 10% increase this year, we have been able to
keep our fees relatively stable with modest 4-6% increases. We strive to keep costs as low as possible while still providing
a great hockey experience.
Lets discuss some of those changes to the hockey experience:

This season the Club will roll out a new development model to all our teams. The High Performance Development Model
is a program used in many parts of the country to focus on the basic skills all players need at every level to improve
their hockey skills. This program is used by AAA clubs in Michigan and Pittsburgh as well as several Tier 2 clubs around
the country. Page 2 of this packet will describe this program in a bit more detail.
As many mite parents may be aware, the issue of full-ice hockey for 8U players has become a battleground in the state.
With most clubs moving their mite travel teams out of their organization and out of USA Hockey to AAU, the Sabres
were forced to make a move as well. This season we will not offer mite travel hockey. The Naperville Lancers will be
the club to which our mite travel kids belong. Other than the name, no major changes. Tryouts will be held, coaches
have been brought on board, and several familiar faces will be involved in running those 3-4 mite travel teams as part
of the AAU. Look for more details in an email or check out the Naperville Lancers website at www.napervillehockey.com.
The Sabres will still have Gold Mite and Silver Mite as always; no changes there.
Finally, our girls program has undergone a make-over so to speak. As you will see in the packet a renewed emphasis
on the program with some very motivated people working to improve it should bode well for the future of girls hockey
at the Sabres. The Spring High Performance College Showcase was a huge success that will be followed by a Fall
College Showcase that will be even bigger. Teams are planned at 10U thru 19U, and with an AHAI rule change that
allows some 8U girls to play up at 10U level this should help expand the amount of girls teams around the state. We
are excited about the direction of the program.

As outlined in the attached volunteer letter, I would like to invite all our parents to consider volunteering your time and talents
for the club. The strength of Sabre Hockey stems, in large part, from the adult volunteer support we receive. Consider
becoming a team manager. Volunteer to help with tryouts and evaluations. Secure an ad or sponsorship. Donate an auction
item. Our players count on all of us to help ensure we create a positive, family-oriented environment for many years to come.
On behalf of the Sabre Hockey Board, we wish everyone an enjoyable and rewarding season.
Sincerely,

Jim Clare
President

SABRE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION 2015-2016 SEASON

HIGH PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Sabre Hockey will implement a new program, the High Performance Development Model (HPDM), for
the 2015-16 season. After much feedback from parents and discussion amongst the hockey
committee, the club brought in a few experts to discuss how to improve the skill development of our
players. We were introduced to the HPDM by Bob Mancini. Bob is a former Division 1 College coach,
Player Development Director for the Edmonton Oilers, and the founder of USA Hockeys National
Team Development Program (NTDP) in Ann Arbor, MI. Bob has implemented this model at his own
Tier 2 club in upper Michigan as well as Honey Baked and Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins Tier 1 AAA clubs.
It is also the model the NTDP follows for their USA Hockey National Teams.
The ultimate goal of the HPDM is to develop and improve the skill level of our skaters and provide the
coaches a structured and detailed approach to insure this happens. Keep in mind this is Year 1 of
rolling this out; it will not be without some bumps that we will need to iron out as we go. However, we
firmly believe, and the metrics attest to it, that this is a solid model to allow our players to develop and
be successful both on and off the ice.
Some of the changes you can expect to see:
1. Structured skills sessions every week for our players: No longer will skills be an every two
week drop and go or dont even show proposition. Skill sessions will be pre-planned, stationbased, with focused instruction delivered by our best instructors from inside and outside the
club manning each station. These instructors will man their station every week and build a plan
of progressive development for that station. The number one issue, whether you are a top
travel player or not, is to develop and build on the skills needed to play this great game.
2. Structured Practice Plans: Each level will have practice plans built for skills nights as well as
part of one practice per week. 50% of practice ice will be pre-planned at each level by the
coaches ahead of time with specific focus areas. This will leave plenty of time for coachs
choice to work on areas their team needs work on.
3. Battle Drills/Small Area games: We will put more emphasis on battle drills and small-area
games. As most people know, the game of hockey is played and won in small areas. Individual
battles and mutli-player battles are key to the success of a team. Puck possession is the goal
and battle drills and small-area games raise the compete level of the skaters.
4. Goalie Development: For travel goalies, we will incorporate goalie stations on skills nights each
week as well as a weekly visit to a team practice from a goalie instructor. This plan will reduce
the number of goalies at our normal goalie clinics and give our house goalies more individual
attention at clinics. Additionally, we will make use of video review after games throughout the
season.
5. Off-Ice: For Pee Wee and below, we will be conducting 40 minute off-ice sessions either
before or after practice during the week. The trainers will come to the rink and focus on agility,
balance, coordination, speed and core exercisesall age appropriate of course. Bantams and
above will have a once a week session at the rink and at Force Performance Training.
As you can see these are some ambitious goals, but ones that have been driven by you, the parents.
You have asked us to do a better job in all these areas. As costs rise we need to make maximum use
of our ice and give your player something different, unique, and worthwhile to help their development
long term. Its a fact: if the child is improving, they will enjoy the game that much more. We hope to
create a fun learning environment for your child. More information will follow on the HPDM.

SABRE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION 2015-2016 SEASON

Dear Sabre Hockey Families,

As we head into another great year for the Sabres, I would like to share some exciting information
with you about some of our events we host throughout the season.
We display the words, Dedication, Pride and Commitment prominently on our webpage which refers
to our philosophy regarding how we coach, develop and nurture our players- it is instilled in
everything we do for the club. Throughout the year we host several events, from the Welcome Back
BBQ on August 22nd that kicks off the season, to our annual Award Ceremony that finishes off the
year celebrating our teams successes. We also host a free annual Face Off Dinner/Auction in
October that gives our parents the opportunity to mingle outside the rink while enjoying dinner, drinks
and dancing at the elegant Abington in Glen Ellyn. We are very excited to hold a car raffle again this
year with the winner to be announced at the dinner. More information about the raffle will be
announced soon.
As the largest non-profit youth hockey organization in Illinois, you can imagine it takes a LOT of
volunteers to run our various events. If you are interested in volunteering, we post upcoming
opportunities in our newsletter and website throughout the year. You are also welcome to contact me
directly with any inquiries. You can always stay up to date on all Sabre Announcements by
subscribing to our newsletter by going to our website www.sabrehockey.com and clicking on the
Newsletter tab at the top navigation bar. It is through our collective dedication and commitment that
makes the Sabre Hockey Association the best youth hockey organization in Illinois. I look forward to
hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Stephanie Wontorski

NIHL/CSDHL (Travel) TRYOUTS INFORMATION
There are up to four tryout sessions for each level. Each player must attend at least two sessions to be
eligible for travel team consideration. Tryout schedules are attached. Tryout groups are set and requests
for changing groups will not be considered. The only exception to this rule is if a coach wants a player to
attend an additional tryout session outside of his/her pre-assigned group. All players are to have a dark
colored jersey and a white jersey available for each tryout.
NIHL/CSDHL (Travel) tryouts are directed by the Vice President Hockey and the Travel Director, and
coordinated by the AA coach at each level. Tryouts are open to observers.
Any player may be advised during any of the tryouts that he/she should not attend the remaining
NIHL/CSDHL (Travel) tryout sessions. These players are encouraged to attend NWHL (House)
evaluations. A player may also be asked to not attend a particular session so coaches can have more
time to evaluate other players. This will allow all skaters to get a fair review by the coaches.
Players selected for a NIHL/CSDHL (Travel) team will be notified by his/her coach via telephone within 48
hours after the final tryout session for the level. Not all players trying out for NIHL/CSDHL (Travel) team will
be selected to play at that level. Players not selected are encouraged to attend NWHL (House) evaluations.
Players should be aware that for a NIHL/CSDHL (Travel) team they may have their first practice within a
day or two of the final tryout session.
The first team parent meeting that your coach schedules at the start of the season is mandatory for all
families, with at least one parent attending. Please help your coaches get off to a good start by attending
this meeting.
Travel Director: Joe Bresingham (630-854-4301) or jbresingham@sabrehockey.com
Girls Director: Gretchen Cockey at 630-414-1107 or gcockey@sabrehockey.com

NWHL (House) and IN-HOUSE EVALUATION INFORMATION

Evaluations are for coaches to select teams of equal ability and are not tryouts. Note that NWHL rules
require that all teams playing in the NWHL must create teams of equal ability and that each player receives
equal playing time during games. Our In-House Silver Mites will follow a similar evaluation process.
Evaluations are directed by the Sabre House Director and are open to observers. The House Director
reserves the right to remove a player from the ice for safety reasons.
Evaluation schedule is attached.
Players will be notified by his/her coach via telephone within 48 hours after the final evaluation for the level.
The first team parent meeting that your coach schedules at the start of the season is mandatory for all
families, with at least one parent attending. Please help your coaches get off to a good start by attending
this meeting.

As the Midget program continues to compete at a high level year in and year out, Coach Chelios continues to
provide a best in state experience for our Central States Majors and Minors with an exit strategy of moving
them on to the next level. For the 2015-16 season, we will be fielding CSDHL teams at U18, U16, and U15.
With this in mind, we ask that you read this document in its entirety prior to registering your player. It explains
in detail the time and financial commitments of playing at this level, allowing you to be better informed in the
decision process of where you and your skater will make their hockey season commitment.
Tournaments:
Again, this year, to comply with the modified game limitations, all CSDHL teams will play up to 4 independent
tournaments to augment their Central States schedule, including the Central States Showcase. Attendance is
mandatory (with the exception of players who are injured) at all tournaments for all games, which, at times
requires school absences.

Sabre Girls 2015-16 Fall Program Highlights

The Sabre Girls Hockey Program is pleased to announce that we will field teams at the 10U, 12U, 14U,
16U & 19U levels led by an extremely talented coaching staff with Junior, Division III NCAA and ACHA
Womens College Hockey experience as well as a dedicated girls goalie coach. Tryouts will be
conducted August 15 & 16, 2015.
Pre-Tryout Mini Boot Camp: Bridging the gap between Registration and Tryouts,
Sabre Girls Hockey will conduct its inaugural Pre-Tryout Mini Boot Camp August 413, 2015 at All Seasons Ice Rinks. The Boot Camp will provide a high-tempo
combination of both on and off-ice workouts to prepare players for tryouts and the
upcoming 2015-16 Fall season. Players will be challenged during 6 on-ice and 3
off-ice sessions with the main focus on conditioning, puck movement, agility and
speed. This training is offered in two separate age groups: 8U-10U-12U and 14U16U-19U. Program fee: $195. Additionally, Sabre Girls Coaching staff has designed an optional
Independent Summer Workout Program to help our girls maintain their fitness level during the summer
months.
High Performance College Showcase: In addition to the individual age level
programs outlined in this registration packet, Sabre Girls Hockey will host our 2nd
High Performance College (HPC) Showcase October 9-11, 2015 at Rocket Ice
Arena in conjunction with the IIHF World Girls Ice Hockey Weekend. This inviteonly Showcase, which will field 5 teams at both the 16U and 19U age levels, is a
recruitment event for prospective NCAA Division III and ACHA female athletes
around the country and provides an educational opportunity to inform female
hockey players and parents the opportunities that exist outside of NCAA Division I hockey. Games will
be officiated by a female officials with both international and Olympic officiating experience.

SABRE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION 2015-2016 SEASON

Additionally, Sabre Girls will host a Try Hockey For Free Event during the HPC Showcase to celebrate
the IHHF World Girls Ice Hockey Weekend.
Ice Cream Social: All current Sabre Girls and those girls interested in the Sabre Girls
Hockey program are invited to attend our first ever Ice Cream Social on Sunday,
August 9, 2015 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at Commissioners Park. Girls will get to make
their own sundaes, play a little street hockey and get to know one another and our
coaches. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about our program in a fun and
informal setting.
Informational College/Recruitment Night: In September our 14U, 16U and 19U Girls will be invited
to attend an Informational College/Recruitment Night led by our 19U coaching staff. They will receive
information on how to create a highlight video, NCAA Division III and ACHA recruitment guidelines, a
recruitment checklist outlining steps they should take from their freshman year through their senior
year, how and when to contact college coaches, the importance of grades, responsible social media
use and much more.
Mentoring Program: Sabre Girls Hockey believes it is important for our older girls to give back and
serve as role models to our younger girls; therefore, we will institute a mentoring program where older
girls will attend a younger girls practice on a scheduled rotating basis two times per month (e.g. 19U
girls will participate in a 12U and/or 14U practice; 16U girls will participate in a 10U and/or 12U practice).
Puck Cancer Night: We also believe that philanthropy is important. Sabre Girls Hockey will host a
Puck Cancer Night in September which will be organized and run by our 19U girls and involve all age
levels from 10U to 16U with auctions, raffles, chuck-a-puck, bake sales, etc.

Girls currently skating with the Sabre Hockey Association will be notified via club email
and website when registration begins. If you are interested in registering for any of the
Sabre Girls Hockey Spring Programs and are not currently registered with the club,
please email Gretchen Cockey, Sabre Girls Hockey Director at
gcockey@sabrehockey.com to be notified when program registration opens.
