"A good company delivers excellent products and

services, and a great company does all that and strives

to make the world a better place."
----William Ford Jr., Chairman, Ford Motor Co.

Historically the business is being run with the sole

purpose of profit making. The era of globalization during
the late 20th century saw a major shift from profit making
to growth centric organizations. The evolving phenomenal
shift from financial accounting to social accounting has
been an armstrongian leap in the way business is being
done in the contemporary world.
Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur
presents Parishram’10 - the next step to revolutionize this
process by providing a common platform to the three
pillars of the burgeoning society i.e. Youth, NGO and the
corporate. This is the place where they can come,
collaborate and compete against one another to find the
best of all the available alternatives. ‘Parishram’ is a step
ahead from all the other similar events in a way that it calls
for all the student community to showcase their talent in
the service of the society.
Structure
The event will consist of three phases which will not only test the
analytical skills of the participants but also their dedication toward the social
cause. The first phase will be an online submission while the second and third
phase will take place at Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur.

The first Milestone

The event will consist of multiple case studies pertaining to different
NGOs whose names and operations will be strictly confidential. The problem
statement in the case study can vary from fund generation to operational
problems of the NGO’s. The scope of the case study is not limited to any stream
of management and hence students with different educational backgrounds are
invited from all over the country to solve the problem by using best of their
skills and knowledge. Teams are requested to email a detailed analysis of the
chosen case in doc/pdf format not Less than 1500 words. Teams will be short
listed for each case study and will be asked to present their solution in the next
round.

The Second Milestone

In this phase, the shortlisted teams in each case will be asked to present
the solution they have proposed for the given NGO. The evaluation of the
proposal will be based on Social, economical, Political and financial feasibility
of the solution. Sufficient weights will be given to the grass root research done
by the team. Teams are expected to look into all the four areas in-order to
make it to Grand finale. All the teams will have to give a power point
presentation of their solutions in front of the NGO representatives and industry
experts. Power point presentation should not exceed 15 slides (excluding cover
page) Winner of each case study will be rewarded handsomely by the respective
NGO. Rewards may include a chance to implement the solution under the aegis
of the NGO. The top team from each case study will be further moved to the
next round which will check the dedication and marketing skills of the student
as to sell their ideas.
The Finish Line
In this phase all the teams from the last round will be given similar set of
products and are expected to sell them during the remaining time left in the
‘Saamanjasya ‘10’. The participants will be provided with all the necessary
infrastructure and campus details to facilitate their marketing campaign. The
range of the products will be given on-the-spot and team is expected to sell
them to anyone inside the IIT campus. The top two teams will be decided on
the basis of the revenues generated, and the money collected would be donated
to a school run by an NGO in the IIT campus.

Abstracts
Case A

The case discusses the efforts taken by a group of volunteers coming

from varied backgrounds like psychology, international relations and law etc
for including the children with disability into various streams of life like
education, governance etc. The volunteers call themselves as “CAMPAIGNERS
FOR INCLUSION” and have successfully implemented inclusion of facilities for
disabled children in access to some of the metro stations. The group is looking
forward to include insertion of disability issues in all ministries instead of
secluding them in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. However,
since this campaign is a right based campaign with no direct involvement of
children and it aims at policy level change, it is difficult to get people on board
to take action for the issue. The movement is facing a huge challenge in
mobilizing privileged section of the society for the cause. The case demands
from the participants to come out with different modes to mobilize public on
the issue so that they join the campaign across age groups, professions etc and
work together to bring about the necessary changes, right at the policy level.
Case B

This case discusses about the role the youth has played in the historical
battle of India against British in pre-independence era and then their role as
budding leaders in the early post-independence era. The case discusses the
various approaches the contemporary society takes while considering the role
of youth in the development of India. It further discloses the obvious decline in
the participation of youth in the politics and governance of India. In the light of
this, the case further demands you to come up with the reason for the same
and to evolve a strategy to increase the engagement of youth in India. The NGO
strives to create a sustainable society and making a state accountable by
empowering the poor to demand their right. In order to achieve this aim, it feels
that the youth engagement in the current society is an emerging area. The case
demands various recommendations and an ideal process model for effective
youth engagement in the country.

Case C

This case study is about Nehru Kala Kunj, a complex which will house
six hundred families of classical musicians, weavers, craftsmen and folk artists
from almost all the states of India. It seeks to implement programmes that offer
long term solutions to the problem of survival for a much broader base of
creative talent. It seeks to promote the growth of vibrant and economically
viable artistic community that has inherent capacity to create wealth and good
will for itself and for the nation. It discusses the various road blocks in the
implementation of the project and the challenges which need to be resolved.

Case D

This case study discusses the educational scenario and lack of the basic
amenities like supply of water, electricity etc in one of the unauthorized colony
of South Delhi. It talks about the infrastructure in government educational
institutes and the lack of motivation to drive the students in these institutes.
The case study documents the family background of a student and how the
initiatives by this NGO helped them and many others to pursue their education
in that area. It also examines various factors which impact the upbringing of a
child academically and personally.
Case E

This case study discusses the education system of the children hailing
from the disadvantaged group and the role played by Remedial education
center, Anganwadis and Balwadis to provide better development opportunities.
The case seeks to implement a self sustainable model so as to make the
community come forward and undertake the running of the ‘Anganwadis’ and
‘Balwadis’ without any external funding i.e. first step is to make them realize
the need for the pre-schools, and then get them to demand assistance for
running the same, from the Government.

Case F

This case talks about the problems being faced by the mothers and
newborns ‘especially poor’ in getting the effective medical treatment. The high
newborn and child mortality rate which is worse than even some of the
neighbouring countries bears a testimony to the fact that though India is
booming but the effect of its growth are not reaching its poor and their children
are suffering from the consequences. The NGO is working for the cause and
has started a program which assists the Govt. Health system by providing
proper training to the community level workers on essential newborn care,
maternal care and general child health care including nutrition. The
participants are expected to come up with the strategy which will bring a
national level momentum to this program. They are required to draft a road
map of the various policy changes required at the government level and also
suggest various fund raising plans which can make this program sustainable
on the long run.
